Lol, I know I said this in my Beagle topic a few months ago..but hey, I'm keeping my mind open. I have been looking up information on Greyhounds and I simply find the breed to be amazing..dating back to the ancient Egyptians, being worshipped as gods, and some people even believe that all dogs somehow decended from them. I know they are a bit of a challenge to raise as puppies so I decided once I'm old enough I'm going to adopt a rescued race Greyhound. And, I think that it's a really smart choice. Greyhounds live 10-13 years, and they usually retire at the age of 2-4 so even if you adopted one, he would still have a lot of his life left to spend with you. Greyhounds rarely bark, some can sleep up to 18 hours a day, they are the biggest couch potatoes EVER! Yet at the same time they are the second fastest animal (I read in a magazine that only the chetah can outrun them), even though they only sprint in short distances from 0-45 mph. I also heard that they are pretty affectionate and gentle. I would love to go help out at a rescue, but all of the ones in Massachusetts are pretty far away from me...and I wouldn't be surprised if I have to be a few years older.
So, do any of you own greyhounds and care to share your own stories/experiences with them? Or advice? I would love to hear what you have to say. :-)
hmm sorry, im a welsh corgi owner...

but no greyhounds. I've always wanted one though... almost got one isntead of the corgi
i only know one thing about greyhounds: back in the old days (so about 20 years ago), greyhounds that couldn't race anymore were shot and sent to universities for biology subjects (ie. disections). i know this because my biology teacher told me. And the students could take parts of the dogs home to practise for exams etc at home, and one guy had the dogs paw hanging outside his bag, and it was bouncing. i thought it was hilarious

This appalling and unacceptable pracice....has caused in the last about 15 years, several National USA Greyhound rescue organizations to form.
What they do is go on weekly trips to the Greyhound race tracks (usually in Florida), and buy the old or wounded dogs that aren't fit to race any longer, bring them up North, nurse them to health and get them proper medical attention, and place them in loving homes.
I worked for 6 years with a very nice lady who headed the Maryland chapter and made the news here. She was very ardent in this cause and found very good homes for dogs, even some who had like 3 legs from cancer or injuries and such. (I met a lot of the dogs she rescued as she would bring them to the office!)
I also see their organization with booths and some of their rescued dogs at most of the Maryland fairs, community festivals and I ALWAYS give whatever donations I can and I sign the petition to outlaw the unspeakable practices of the racing tracks.
