Hi, this is a bit of a long shot, but I've suddenly started to experience a lot of fatal exception blue screen crashes at startup. I have googled for the exceptions but with no luck. I'm hoping that someone here is computer literate!!
The fatal exceptions I have recieved (among others!) are:
OE 0028:C161F79A
0028:C161F89A
0028:1448FF4
0028:00000055
0028:C161ED2A
0000:00010000
0028:01015BEO
O6 0028:00000017
OE 0028:C14490613
Your help would be very much appreciated!
Those numbers are just memory address, not error codes. You will not find out much based on them. What version of Windows are you using? Reinstalling may help. Bad memory is also a likely candidate. You could try replacing it. How often do you get these errors?
Windows 98SE, never had a problem before. I also completey wiped the hardrive about 2 months ago, according to the thing when you click on C: I have 11GB still to spare?
Sorry (again) very ignorant about this RAM business - how would I replace it and how would I do this. I'm interested as as the reason i formatted my harddrive about 2 months ago was its crap performance. I thought then it was because of too much stuff collected over the years, but now it seems it could be RAM. Of course I've heard of of it but haven't the foggiest what it is!
RAM stands for Random Access Memory. They're those memory sticks (or chips) that you insert into one of those slots in the motherboard.
A simple search on RAM would turn up a picture of what they look like.
I would recommend first opening your PC's case, taking out the RAM stick, writing down the product number listed on it, and putting it back into the PC, so you can look up the RAM chip you have in your PC to determine what kind of RAM it is. I would recommend getting a new RAM chip stick with more memory, depending what kind of RAM it is (if it's DDR, for example)
I have Windows 98SE and "this" has worked for me EVERY time when my computer crashes repeatedly. Disk Defragmenter reorganizes the programs on your hard drive so that your computer runs more efficiently.
Off the Start menu, pick Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter to defragment your hard drive.
Make sure no programs are open when you run the defragmenter. Hit control alternate delete to manually close every program one by one EXCEPT "Explorer".
After all this, run "disk defragmenter" and leave your computer on overnight.
Good Luck

Umm.. Not really a good Idea... sorry Dark.. But if this person doesn't know what RAM is I do not recommend him opening his computer.. he might do more damage than good if he happens to touch somehting without grounding himself first..
And chances are if he is using Win98SE his RAM is just SDRAM.. not DDR.. I know you said for example.. but hey.. lets not give him examples of Lambourgini's if he is working on a Chevette.. you know what I mean..
My suggestion is to take it to your local Computer Repair shop. especially if you do not know what you are doing.
