I always think about how fabulous it would have been for Freddie to collaborate and sing a
duet(s) with Aretha Franklin. They would have sounded great together. Have you heard Freddie's little tribute singing like Aretha on "Queen On Fire Live At The Bowl" at Milton Keynes?--Magic!!
Talk about powerhouse vocal range and gospel, soulful interpretation and phrasing.
In 1987 Aretha had one of her biggest hits with...George Michael with the record "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" which is one of my all time favorite pop songs and duets, and songs by Aretha Franklin..as well as by George Michael.
But...not only would I have been fascinated with..any song Freddie might have done with Aretha had he had the creative opportunity...
I would have loved to instead or also have heard Freddie sing "I Knew You Were Waiting For Me" with Aretha.
If she and George sounded spectacular, I bet she and Freddie would have sounded stratospheric (I know that's not a real word...but it fits don't you think).
Tell you what would have also been a cool or rather beautiful collaboration.
If Freddie & Aretha had redone "Until You Come Back To Me, (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" as a duet. That's such a great song...& would have made a perfect duet for them...
I have always believed that rather than doing the Mr Bad Guy album as it was, Freddie should have been "encouraged" to collaborate with other vocallists - imagine, in 1985, having an album by Freddie of duets with:
Jagger, Plant, Daltrey, Franklin, Jackson, Minelli, Streisand, Stewart etc.......
It would have been the biggest selling album of all time.
Since you are all again...stating, debating, or wondering or what not who Freddie's favorite singer was...
and the common consensus....
still seems to be Ms. Respect herself...Aretha Franklin...
Let's revisit this topic...shall we..
I think that if they worked together, It'd be best if the two of them also WROTE what they sang together (or if Freddie wrote it) as opposed to something that a third party had written.
Aretha Franklin was one of those singers that I never paid much attention to until I seen a couple of programs featuring her. One was a documentary that showed quite a few live performances of her from the sixties onwards and the other was VH1 Divas wher she blew Celine "I'm gonna hit every note possible until I need to get to the right one" Dion, Shania Twain and Gloria Estefan off the stage. The documentary one just hooked me from the word go.
Brilliant singer and it would have been good to have seen her and Freddie sing together.

Freddie Quote
"I love the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, above all other singers. She must have one of the best voices ever. She sings like a dream. I wish I could sing half as well as she does. It's so natural."
"She puts her whole emotion into it. Each word she sings is full of meaning and expression. I could listen to it forever."
