Does anyone love Hot Space. It's questionably my favourite queen album. Why does everyone seem to hate it? Staying Power , Dancer and Backchat are all brilliant. OK, Body Language is crap but everything else on there is really good. It may be a little different from Queen's usual style, but I think each album is unique anyway. It's a real boogie record for me, I know that sounds sad but it really does make you bounce when you are driving! |

gabriel79 wrote: if it wasn't a queen album i'd said it's a shitThat's probably true for me, too. The thing about Queen was when they were good, they were great, but even when they weren't as good, they still had something going for them. The songs on Hot Space were more disco, but they still had the Queen signatures. And plus, most of the songs on Hot Space aren't that bad. Calling All Girls, Las Palabras De Amor, Life Is Real, Put Out The Fire, Cool Cat, etc. I can't warm up to Dancer, though. I think it's the lyrics that put me off of it. But all in all, Hot Space isn't a bad album. |

Hot Space is one of those albums that grows on you over time. If you listen to it in its own right and don't compare it to previous releases then it's ok. Queen always moved with the times and I suppose it was natural to move into the "black funk" category after the success of "The Game" which appealed to a wider audience. Personally think that "staying power" done live is awesome and really shows how tight as a group Queen were (and are!). A POSITIVE COMMENT MR REIN IF YOU'RE READING!! I'VE BEEN A FAN FOR OVER 20 YRS YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY SUPPOSED "EXPERT" & WE ALL HAVE OPINIONS!!! |
GonnaUseMyPrisoners 16.11.2004 12:37 |
At the time of release, I most certainly loved it & turned my friends on to it, by blasting it on my car stereo (captive audience!!!). God what a shit I was! (am?) Though it should be said that I detested all the Deaky songs (as usual). Bland. Wimpy. Silly. This album, above all others, suffers from the shittiest, most shallow, and amateurish lyrics from start to finish. Bummer, cuz some of the grooves are quite good. Calling All Girls, on the other hand, I think is quite OVERRATED among fans these days, being one of the "normal-sounding", "non-disco" tracks on the record, but suffering from some REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE lyrics & half-baked vocal delivery. Freddie just couldn't sell the lyrics without cracking an embarrassed smile, they're so bad. Yes, I like the strummed guitar playing, but the song doesn't work. They should have left it for Roger's Strange Frontier record, or other release more easily forgotten. |
gabriel79 16.11.2004 12:43 |
i don't like calling all girls for that shitty sound that you hear...it's like a crack...d'u know whatta mean? |
brENsKi 16.11.2004 12:52 |
i loathe most of this album - used to like under pressure. then vanilla ice showed that U.P., just like the rest was incredibly dull, predictable and so formulaic.... the album is a pile of shite when compared to almost everything else they ever did ...but people - that's not the benchmark to measure it against....this is... Personally I'd say if a band you could take or leave released Hot Space, would you buy it? I would think for most queen fans - the honest answer to this would have to be a resounding NO! |
gabriel79 16.11.2004 12:55 |
yeah, let's say things as they are.hot space is good only because on the cover is written queen. and the works is better but not so much.eighties were a bad time for musicians from 60s and 70s(just listen to r. stones records in teh 80s) |

For me Hot Space is good in parts, but never great: I have never liked Staying Power, it has such a weak sense of drive. Dancer is good in the solo. Otherwise so-so. Body Language I like for the sordidness of the idea, but I think is musically weak. Back Chat I do like. Calling All Girls I do like. Life is Real has really grown on me. Put out the fire is OK. Action This Day has grown on me. Las Palabras de Amor I have gone off somewhat. The synth wash makes it feel messed up. Cool Cat I hated but now I quite like. Body Language is OK,but has never grown on me much. And I actually don't like Bowie's voice in it. |

my opinion about HS has always been that, for a Queen album it isn't good. It doesn't have the musical and lyrical depth and complexity as their other albums. And there is not really a flow throughout all the songs. But, when I look at it as a disco album It's pretty good. I can't not dance when I listen to it (or the first 1/2 anyway). Back Chat and Staying Power are really good disco. IMO the only worthwhile non disco song is Life is Real, it is fabulous. Side note: Many people have already mentioned how this album killed Queen in the US. This seems quite ironic b/c the most disco Queen song before HS was AOBTD and that was a HUGE hit in the US. It didn't matter what kind of music radio station you listened to they all played it. Then Queen release a largely disco album and it tanked. Anyone else find this ironic?? |

"Some sunshine ray through a crack in a shutter Or a sight of a light at the end of a tunnel Still there's a feeling, this world is using me Action this day Action this night" Don't like that one, try this: "Give me, body - give me - body - body - give me YOUR BODY" One of Freddie's best video performances!!!! |

Then Queen release a largely disco album and it tanked. Anyone else find this ironic??No, because AOBTD used a largely pre-established bass line, for lack of better phrase, from Chic. Because of that familiarity, initially, it got played on Black stations & was a hit because it was something special. Hot Space was derivative, commercial, synthetic, and "White" sounding. Take away the groundswell of support by Black/Soul stations and what have you got? Limeys pushing synthetic disco down the throats of "Whities" in the US? No wonder it didn't work. |

Deacon_Fan 17.11.2004 00:16 |
Hot space is definately the most underrated Queen album. Just because it features "non-traditional" queen songs doesnt make it a bad album. The fact that they can diversify their sound only makes it that much better. If anyone else had done it, it would have been shit. |
mike hunt 17.11.2004 00:17 |
let me say that i like hot, sometimes alot but it took along time to grow on me. staying power is good, back chat and action this day is also good. actually there's only one or two songs i don't like. I do admit it's on the bottom of my list but still good. compare hot space to other bands worst, like judas priest turbo makes hot space look like a masterpiece. |

Like it a lot. Cool Cat is exceptional, Calling all girls a wonderful melodic rocker, Under Pressure stands for itself, Back Chat sets a wonderful atmosphere... not their best, but when it's good, it's very good. I always wondered why it really charted so bad in the US... I know the obvious reasons that are already common knowledge: of course, older Queen-Fans and american rock-fans were disturbed by the new sound and in some cases did not buy it. But as stated before, considering that AOBTD 2 years earlier was such a massive hit in the same musical direction, it appears strange. And by the way, with not so many huge hit-singles in the US anyway, a No. 11 for Body Language is really impressive. It charted better than some of our most beloved Queen-classics. Normally, with a single charting that high, one could expect the album to be sucked onto a Top10-Spot by the interest the single caused. Even if that would've been a totally different audience, it's strange that it stuck on, what was it ? 24 ? |

Rotwang 17.11.2004 07:46 |
Although it's one of the albums I listen to the least, I have a greater appreciation for Staying Power and Back Chat after watching the MK DVD. It's too bad they didn't have better songs on the album because '80-'82 was Freddie at his vocal best. I think it was just a matter of the band experimenting and trying something they hadn't before. At least they never sold out and joined the New Wave sound. Still, Hot Space deserves respect. |
Voice of Reason 2018 17.11.2004 08:29 |
I like Hot Space and often put it on just to play through Staying Power, Dancer and Back Chat. BTW - I've always thought Dancer was White Man under a different arrangement. It often depends on where you come in. I got a schoolfriend into Queen in 1983, so Hot Space was the first album he got to know. When he heard A Night at the Opera he was stunned at how different that was to their 'regular' sound! |
decca 17.11.2004 08:57 |
I wonder why people still discuss this today in the same old manichean way: ist a good or a bad album. It was commercially less successful, that's all. If you consider it in terms of sound and production, then it forms a continuity all the way from Jazz and even from News in some respect. In terms of songwriting, some songs are typical queen signtures (e.g las palabras de amor, life is real, under pressure, put out the fire, calling all girls). Some other, more funky-sounding tunes turn out to be very powerful live numbers (Staying power, action this day), where you just recognize the queen manufacturing brand. So I tend to see Hot Space as a flip side to The Game, which togather with Jazz were my long-time favorites. My view is that Queen never really did a bad album: it did good and better albums instead. |
decca 17.11.2004 09:06 |
It just occured to me that if did not chart that well anwhere in the world, it's probably because of its artwork: tha album sleeve seems not to have any particular concept and the colours chosen do not exactly appeal to the eye. When it came out in 82 I remeber I was rebuked by the ugly colours on the sleeve and wainted a long time before bying it. |
Benn 17.11.2004 09:10 |
For me, Hot Space was the last time that Queen ever took a gamble and did something that THEY wanted to do. After '82, Queen became a vehicle for EMI to dictate that they would churn out top 40 hits all the time. Works, AKOM & Miracle just go to show how the industry works: 82 - Queen come up with a ground-breaking record showing a completely new direction and sound for a band that has been hailed as a Rock band. Sales are poor due to bad marketing and poor choices of simgles. 83 - Queen forced to take a break because of lack of trust from EMI and tension in the band increases as their contract looks shakier. 84 - Queen return to the studio knowing that they have to make EMI happy and settle for being a chart band, therefore take fewer risks with their material. henceforth, they became an industry puppet - the only controversial thing they ever did after that was to appear at Sun City, but those appearances even had the backing of EMI....... Sigh! |

Martin Packer 17.11.2004 11:00 |
Don't take my use of the word "sordid" to mean Body Language disgusted me. It didn't. I actually rather liked that bit. I just thought the song itself wasn't very interesting. What might've said the same about Get Down Make Love. But on that one the "heavy" bit rescued it. And I would've been happy if Freddie had kept with "cunt stains on my pillow". :-) Maybe I've lost the ability to be disgusted. :-) Seriously, sexual crudity doesn't disgust me but plenty of other things do - such as homophobia and fascism. |

Well i don't and i've still got the scars to prove it.Its Cack.Always was. So stop pretending otherwise. Whoever said if it didn't have Queen written on the cover etc. is right. You would all think it was bollocks. When it came out i was horrified. This was the band that hadn't been seen for 2 years and they turn out this diatribe. As for keeping up with current trends that is total shit. They completely missed the boat with this album. It was bad enough putting up with AOBTD without this heap. And you know what makes it worse?? The tracks that aren't tired formulaic disco tunes and are meant to be like your 'normal' Queen tracks are bloody awful as well!!!! Put out the Fire / las pabs / life is real / calling all girls. There must be 20 minutes work in that lot. They got it horribly wrong and they know it and we know it. And before you ask it has nothing to do with it being in the 80's.. |
mamamia 18.11.2004 13:07 |
I don't think the album is crap but, I don't think upbeat dance is their style, some of the songs are ok though like staying power, calling all girls and backchat, wasn't keen at all though on body language. |

Hot Space is not the best Queen album. Any different opinion? (I think we all agree). Maybe is the...let´s say "worst" Queen album, but with this album we have the opportunity to realize that even the worst Queen work is BRILLIANT. Cool Cat, Las Palabras de Amor, Staying Power, Put out the Fire, Calling All Girls, and much more!!!! |
RockitPJ 18.11.2004 20:55 |
Queen are who they are because of the chances they took such as this one. Queen music is timeless so some generation of music lovers will like this record. I though that this was a smart release by the band to gain a new audience. It was a brilliant move by them. I personally like the record except for Body Language. |
DrMay 19.11.2004 00:54 |
