You know, I've tried to put Queen into a genre, but I became too baffled at the fact they just didn't fit into any. They have an array of songs and styles that could fit into many genres, but to put them in one would almost be unfair. No doubt, they are the greatest rock band ever, and will probably go down as only a rock band. (In an idiots view anyway) But whose to call a lot of their other songs purely rock? Fact is......they aren't. So therefore, I declare(for my own sake, cos delcaring things gives me a sense of power, lol) that Queen, due to the fact of their highly indepth exploration of styles, have become a genre all on their own.
You can't put a label into them but that happens with any major band. Think about Extreme: is Get The Funk Out rock? Definitely not. Funk? No. It's unique. More Than Words ditto. The melody is too long and the song is "too complex" in form, for an "acoustic ballad", in spite of being arranged as acoustic ballads use to. Or GnR: November Rain is too simple in harmony to be art or progressive, but too clever in form to be "normal" rock; too melodic to be grunge or punk, too heavy to be pop.
and most big bands bands evolve down the years - queen, genesis, the stones, kiss, and evlution involves experiementation and change
.....unless you are THE WHO
I think this quote is pretty good.
"I prefer to think that we're not prog at all !! Prog was in 70's and if you play that kind of stuff today...then it's must be REGRESSIVE... Our music is based to find own original sound. All the great bands and artists which music have lasted has that quality. For example: Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody...Nobody calls it prog or hard rock. They just call it The Queen !! If you have to call music Country or Prog, the most of time it just means that it doesn't stand on its own."
-Mika Järvinen (from Five Fifteen (a finnish band))

???????????????
it worked well for marillion and it's working well for the daNkness now...so regressive is not correct....all music goes around and comes back...look at the 90s britpop - it was like 68 all over again
The best bands never allowed themselves to get stuck in one genre - Queen, The Clash, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd. Radiohead seem to be leading the way these days.

I find myself asking that question a lot.. I'd say they are their own genre..I mean some of their songs I find to seem like rock..but for the most part I'd definately say they are their own.
