Me and my Dad (he's a huge Abba fan) been talking about Queen and Abba. Seems like people who buy Queens music also buy Abba's. We laugh about that and even on Brian Mays soapbox, he mention that to quote "I remember way back in our past, interviewers were always trying to get us to put down Abba, saying, 'they are a Pop band, and you are a Rock band'. Who cares? When we met them out there we all got on great - because of mutual respect - we all put our efforts into entertaining people." My question is how Queen fans feel about Abba? I'm a HUGE Queen fan, since 1975 seen them twice in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, Richfield Coliseum (which since had been torn down) in '80 and '82. Just looking for feedback to show my dad! thanks |

Abba? Sure. Have one Greatest Hits album and listen to it, when my neighbours are on holidays... Seriously, I think they gave us some nice tunes. Note how they also constantly have to deny rumours that they are going to tour again. |

I think they are OK but a little over rated. Their collections are usually good pop documents but I don't think they have nearly the depth of Queen. |

I grew up with ABBA because my parents happen to be ABBA fans. Although I hardly ever liked anything that my parents liked, I never had a problem whenever they played an ABBA record. I happen to like ABBA a lot, and you don't wanna know how many people make fun of me for liking them. SO FUCKIN' WHAT IF THEY MADE BUBBLEGUM POP!... everybody here has liked bubblegum pop at least once in their lifetime, but they just hate to admit it. The thing that makes ABBA different from your common pop star is that they're not fabricated. They write their own music, and even if you're not very fond of them you have to admit that it takes a lot of talent to write over 20 top of the chart hit songs like they did. Funny thing is that Bono is one of the most constantly praised musicians by critics, and he happens to be a big fan of ABBA, one of the bands most badly criticized and bashed by the so called "music experts". The one thing that I find annoying about ABBA is that they were awful performers. If you see some of their videos you can't just help but laughing at how stiff and emotionless look Anni Frid and Agnetha on stage. They look like they try so hard to somehow dance and entertain, but they miserably fail. |

I just like Mamma Mia :-D |
Mr Mercury 04.11.2004 18:34 |
I have to say that I love quite a lot of their songs. My fave is "Eagle". IMHO they did write some quite memorable songs - even if they were classed as pop. Also for me they came from that tradition of having to really learn their trade (as did Queen of course) unlike todays so called "pop stars" where computers and all sorts of studio gadgets can make their tuneless voices sound ok. |
jericho05 04.11.2004 18:38 |
And don't forget American Idol winners!! Ughhhhhh.... |
MetzgerR 04.11.2004 21:58 |
That's really funny - I just got my first ABBA cd today...I like them. They're very easy to listen to, I think. Ja ne! |

Is it wrong to dance around the room while singing your lungs out along with 'Dancing Queen'? Because iGSM does it all the time...honestly... DON'T LOOK AT ME LIKE THAT! I HAVE A GIRLFRIEND! *runs away* |

I have Abba Gold, and I like it very much. Too bad they aren't around now. |
iGSM 05.11.2004 00:59 |
I do not. It's Waterloo. |
Lester Burnham 05.11.2004 01:11 |
Oh I see how it is, you always have to correct me on everything. OH IT'S ALL GOOD, as long as Lester looks like a right twit! No, he can never get anything right, because you're always changing it up on him! Nevermind the fact that he refers to himself in the third person periodically. |

And I love the whole "Super Trouper" album. Essential. But their best song is "The Day Before You Came" - gives me shivers it's so good, and uncharacteristic of what most people think of Abba's sound. Yeah, I'm a big Abba Fan - I saw them live on the Voulez-Vous tour... what a spectacle! Pop yes, but musically sound & interesting, like Queen. I always thought Money, Money, Money should have been a Queen song. |

Abba is my favourite band. Even above the Beatles |
gnomo 05.11.2004 06:05 |
... always liked ABBA a lot and always wished Queen had tried "Fernando" - in a quiet IITWWC style, the RS playing nearly acoustic, haunting WWTLF drums in the background and a few bass notes cleverly dropping down here and there... ... utterly insane, yes - as most dreams are... -- Gnomo |
KillerQueen840 05.11.2004 07:15 |
I don't like Abba... last year my class did this pathetic skit to some of their songs...I still try to forget about it.... I dunno.. I just don't care for his songs. I like the harder stuff. |
PD. 05.11.2004 08:10 |
I admire them. I've found this interesing quote: Bjorn also says that Queen were "very inspirational to both Benny and myself....With 'Boheman Rhapsody,' we felt they were going in the same direction as us -- towards a more theatrical, dramatic sound..." |
Serry... 05.11.2004 09:24 |
Anyway it was great to hear Brian's live version of 'Dancing Queen' during his 'Another World Tour'! |

Well, I think that0s just a coincidence of your enfoirnement. Casue I hate ABBA, and love Queen. By The Way you should download Brian May and ABBA -- dancing Queen. However, caspar told me, it was just Brain. But it's funn. |

I LOVE ABBA! "The Visitors" is SUCH a great album! It's odd... I was JUST lietening to them, Then I saw this topic. :P |

ABBA? kinda funny -- i've recently discovered that i share similar feelings towards them as i do Bruce Springsteen. i'd always assumed i didn't like Springsteen, because i never liked anything by him that i heard. then i realized that Manfred Mann's "Blinded By The Light" was an old Springsteen tune. then i heard Roger's cover of "Racing In The Streets". and i had to admit that i like Springsteen tunes. i just don't like Springsteen doing Springsteen tunes. same thing with ABBA. used to think i hated them. then i heard Five Iron Frenzy (great ska band) doing a cover of "Mamma Mia", which i loved. then i recently came across Sixpence None The Richer doing a cover of "Dancing Queen", which sounds great. and i've had to admit that maybe i just don't like ABBA doind ABBA songs. |
goinback 06.11.2004 03:21 |
ABBA is sort of like Duran Duran...they both had/have great melodies, but they both got too popular with teenage girls so it was trendy to bash them. Of course Queen is still better though ;) |

ThomasQuinn wrote:To be completely honest, I really dislike them. I find their music boring and a bit too easy. Not all their songs are "too easy". Listen to Intermezzo No.1 for example. But I must say I like the "easy" stuff too, and their later albums are their best, I think. While speaking of Abba: Does anyone here have any concert bootlegs with them? I have a lot of rare Queen videos to trade if you're interested! :) |

I haven't really heard that much of Abba besides their greatest hits, but I like what I've heard. And Mamma Mia was great. I was obsessed with that soundtrack for ages! |
mamamia 06.11.2004 14:27 |
ABBA I quite enjoy their music, I can't say i'm a superfan, but my favourite song must beDancing Queen or Voulez Vous, the song that knocked Bo Rhap of the top spot in 1975. |
Sebastian 06.11.2004 18:50 |
Voulez Vous is much later than that. The song that knocked Bo Rhap out was Mamma Mia, and it wasn't until early 1976. Cheers |

I must say that I do not own a single ABBA album. They are fun to listen and dance to when you're inebriated, but that's about it. |
