Yesterday after a long long time I was listening to AOBTD backwards again. I remember when I was listening it first time, somehow I didnt noticed something special, but now I could clearly hear that phrase "It's fun to smoke marijuana". If someone has this version 3:32 s long time, this phrase you can hear best at 31-32 s, 35-36 s, then 1:06, 1:08, 1:11, 1:13 s. Of course it is repeated very often, but most clear in those times. |

I don't know, I still can't hear it. It just sounds kind of garbled, and I wouldn't hear 'It's fun to smoke marijuana' unless I was listening specifically for it, but maybe that's just me. ;-) |
Lawyeris 14.09.2004 01:44 |
First time I didnt too. You dont except to hear it in normal way, that Freddie would say that phrase syllable by syllable, remember it's backwards, but those backwad sounds really remind Its fun to smoke marijuana. Try again, in 31-32, and 35-36 s there's nothing just this phrase. |

I gave a pretty good theory for this the other day (since this topic seems to come up very often). We know that there are some reversed piano notes used as effects in the song, so chances are good that they were listening to the song backwards in the studio to hear how they sounded each way. So I'm thinking perhaps they heard an earlier vocal and said 'hey, that almost sounds like "It's fun to smoke marijuana"' so just for fun, Freddie recorded a new vocal to see if he could make it sound clearer when played backwards. And it worked (as far as many people are concerned anyway) So I think it was both an accident and intentional but certainly they were aware what it sounded like. And remember, they weren't planning on releasing the song as a single at first.. so they may have thought it just a funny little thing to see whether anyone would find this 'message' on the album. Then of course they swore to always deny it. |
Lawyeris 14.09.2004 02:20 |
The fact is - you can hear it. |
Penis - Vagina 14.09.2004 02:29 |
Hmm, well here is the clearest vocal part from the original (2001 remaster) followed by the DTS center channel (most likely DVD-A) which doesn't have the sound effects. It sounds a lot different without them.. the question is.. was it always different by itself, or did they alter the vocal for the 5.1 mix in an attempt to put an end to this stuff? link "Bites" sounds a little odd forward too, as if they've altered it. Hmmmm..... |

I'll check it at home. |

Thanks a lot for the MP3. It's been several years that I heard about this rumour and doesn't have the skills or tools to listen to it so thanks again. For me it sounds like "Start to smoke Marijuana" and not "it's fun to..." Anyway, does anybody asked Brian ? |
Mr. Scully 14.09.2004 08:09 |
"Anyway, does anybody asked Brian ?" The question should be different: is here anybody who hasn't seen this thing explained about a hundred times before? There are no backward messages in Queen songs, you only hear what you want to hear, Queen very strongly denied any such things. What else do people need? Does this topic have to be brought up on every Queen forum every month? |
joeyjojo 14.09.2004 08:52 |
I think it actually says 'I want to choke an iguana" |
Lawyeris 14.09.2004 09:02 |
"There are no backward messages in Queen songs, you only hear what you want to hear" What you hear is what you hear and no imagination is here On the other hand, I'm sure it's just funny coincidence, no more. |
AndresGuazzelli 14.09.2004 12:20 |
But... isn't fun to smoke marijuana??? IT IS FUN TO SMOKE MARIJUANA!!!! hahahahahaha!!! lol !! |
queen_forever_87 14.09.2004 13:49 |
I've heard that one before.... they've got more of those on this site: link have fun! |
Aequanoctis 14.09.2004 15:26 |
LOL I happen to have a BBC documentary about censorship in music (mainly in US) and there's a moment where a preacher plays AOBTD on vinyl to let the journalist hear it...once he told him what was supposedly said I could hear it but before, I couldn't. It's all psychological. |

I think I agree with Whirled Peas. I've always kindof thought that maybe John wrote the song with only good intentions, but then Freddie recorded himself singing part of it, then started playing around with it, and that it was just a bit of a joke he played on Deaky. Logically, it makes more sense if it was just a coincidence, but still, I can imagine Freddie doing that . . . |
♥Killer_Queen1946♥ 15.09.2004 19:08 |
HOLY FRIGGIN' CRAP! I just listened to that website that whirled peas posted, and wow. When everybody was talking about it on here, I was just like, okay, dandy, dont need to try it myself, but now....cool. Woah. Oh, and also, To me, it also sounds like "Start to smoke Marijuana". Woot. I feel.....wired now, somehow...woot! |
FriedChicken 16.09.2004 03:08 |
you wouldn't hear it if nobody told you that you can hear 'it's fun to smoke marihuana" if they told you you can hear Mary had a little lamb you would hear that.. I can't believe some people really believe it |

;) FM: let's record this vocal, dears, and play it backwards! Won't that be fabulous? JD: didn't the Beatles try that? RT: I forget. Pass me the lighter. BM: We should release an album some day and call it 'On Fire at the Bowl'! FM: John, if we play your lyric in reverse, it says 'I like to smoke marijuana.' Isn't that fruity, dear? JD: Puff, puff, pass, Roger -- I mean it. RT: I'm a man on fire. Rock n' roll just pays the bills. (cough, belch) BM: if we put out a musical one day, should we offer the crowd brownies like those lovely bobbies in our flat, or do you think people will want spliffs? FM: That's a lovely shade of green, dear, it reminds me of my first shopping trip in Japan and I had to choose between this silk kimono and a canvas one. Can you imagine how much that would chafe? It's just not the thing done in rock n' roll. JD: (buzzes intercom to reception area) Sheffield! Get off your ass. I have the munchies. Get me roasted peanuts, dammit. RT: I'm so high my name is high. BM: Freddie poos, did you fill this with Cristal again? What a brilliant idea! |
MayFan 16.09.2004 14:14 |
RT: I'm so high my name is high. That's hillarious!! Good one! =) |

it's crazy, subliminal messages. I mean, who takes their time to play these songs backwards just to find hidden messages? I find it apalling! Oh well, what can you do, i guess...that was funny though, especially the "Baby One More Time" backwards message. How true, how true! And that Pink Floyd one was funny, it's so cool that they meant to put it in there. |

Brian has finally addressed this issue on his site... link Pretty much what I expected.. a complete denial :-P Strange thing though.. I sorta believe him. |
Brimon 25.09.2004 20:28 |
Well, he would deny it, would'nt he. ;)) |

Roger_in_Tigerskin_Trousers wrote: at least queen aren't satanists like led zeppelin and their "satanic" messageWatch it, Roger. I honestly don't think Led Zeppelin were satanists, though it may be evident in their songs. If I were to put a satanic message in a song that I made, would people instantly think, "oh my god, he's a satanist"? No. It depends on their intentions. If there's proof that Led Zeppelin goes through satanic rituals before their concerts or kill animals as offerings to the devil, then yes, they are satanists. But there is NO proof of that, is there? My conclusion: The members of Led Zeppelin are not satanists if there's only one piece of evidence against them, whether or not it is found in their biggest hit when played backwards. Watch your words, everybody, especially you, Roger... |

sorry innuendo, I didn't mean the comment to be taken so seriously. They are my 2nd favourite band after all. However i do think that they were very ODD men. Admittedly not full blown satanists but unhealthely interested in the occult |
