Mr. Scully 10.09.2004 05:39 |

These are the same pictures as were linked on Blabbermouth. And the link works fine for me. Strange that it doesn't work for you. |

I would've loved to hear Queen play with Meat Loaf... |

From the Las Vegas 'SUN' September 09, 2004 VegasBeat -- Timothy McDarrah: 'We Will Rock You' strikes a chord on Strip ••• Rock us, they did. There isn't a roof on the pool deck at Paris Las Vegas, but if there was it would have been blown off. If you have a cigarette lighter nearby, flick it and hold it up as you read the rest of this. At the afterparty for "We Will Rock You," the musical that officially opened its Las Vegas production Wednesday night, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen -- and a host of musical guests -- delivered a blazing 50-minute set that sent shock waves through the 2,000 or so guests. "It has been a long time since since we rocked and rolled," shouted an ebullient Taylor before he performed a raucous version of the Led Zeppelin classic "Rock and Roll." Then May called for "Mr. Loaf -- is there a Mr. Loaf in the house?" before Meat Loaf took center stage, ripped off his leather jacket and launched into the classic "Johnny B. Goode." Even Freddie Mercury, who is up there somewhere, must have heard the thunderous ovation after that one. Is Queen king? "You could say that," Robert De Niro, a co-producer of "We Will Rock You," mumbled to us after he zoomed across the red carpet and before he entered Le Theatre des Arts for the show. The crowd included Beatle Paul McCartney's half-sister Ruth McCartney and her husband, Martin Nethercutt, Monty Python's Eric Idle, "Absolutely Fabulous" star Jennifer Saunders, power lawyer Allen Grubman (father of the infamous Lizzie Grubman) and such local personalities as Robin Leach, Martin Nievera, Jeff Beacher, Harry Morton, Tony Sacca and Paris Las Vegas prez Bobby Yee. From those, the consensus was that the show is perfect Las Vegas entertainment. The pop-culture and current-events references -- all penned by show writer Ben Elton -- are hilarious. While Clay Aiken is a pretty easy target, lines such as how the bad guys in the show are not going to find "(musical) instruments of mass destruction" ignited the crowd. The many jokes at the expense of Celine Dion, Cirque du Soleil and Wayne Newton are funny, but not mean-spirited. And, if a heavily muscled black man with a mohawk going by the name Britney Spears and singing "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" doesn't epitomize the unconventional and rebellious spirit of rock 'n' roll, well, we don't know what does. The show is set in the far-off future, when music has been outlawed. The plot revolves around two young Bohemians and their search for the last guitar on Earth, which they eventually learn is entombed in the walls of Graceland. It is a rough approximation of the myth of King Arthur pulling out the sword, Excalibur, from the stone. But in this story, there's a lot more rocking. "I was pretty happy with everything," May told us after the show. "The kids did a good job." Tony Vincent, who stars as Galileo, and Aspen Miller, who stars as Scaramouche (they alternate with co-leads Jason Wooten and Kacie Sheik), are the main characters, and they earned well-deserved raves afterward, as did the rest of the cast, including Ty Taylor (Spears), Patti Russo as the evil Killer Queen and Douglas Crawford as her meanie sidekick, Khashoggi. "Five thumbs up," Leach proclaimed at the afterparty. Some random pix: link |

Setlist Tie Your Mother Down The Show Must Go On Don't Stop Me Now Stone Cold Crazy Rock'n'Roll Johnny B Good With A Little Help From My Friends And i don't think Brian and Roger sang on any song did they? |
Pim Derks 11.09.2004 07:00 |
Nice to see them digging out DSMN. |
Mr. Scully 11.09.2004 10:56 |
Wow, the setlist looks nice. Not the usual GaGa/WWRY crap. Let's hope somebody recorded it... |
Mr. Teatime 11.09.2004 11:07 |

'Monty' on QO.com gave a great review: what a gig! what an atmosphere! i've been to a fair few bri+rog gigs in the last couple of years, but this one EASILY surpasses them all in terms of performance and vibe. yep, it was even better than the Freddie Tribute in 2001! have the web sites mentioned that MEATLOAF sang Johnny B.Goode? nope? now you know.well, here's the lowdown for you queenies out there:- here's the set list... Tie Your Mother Down-extended version-sang by jason wooten(gallileo) and kacie sheik(scaramouche). glen hughes(bass) and stevie vai(guitar). more guitars by good ol' Bri and, ..that guy from extreme(dont know his name.soz.) Chad from Red Hot Chile Peppers on drums with Rog too. this is possibly the best version of TYMD i've heard since dear freddie moved on. The Show Must Go On- kacie sang. Dont Stop Me Now- (surprised?) jason sang. Stone Cold Crazy- sang by Glen. Brian seemed to be in his element particularly with this song. Rock'n'Roll- Roger came down from his drum kit to sing this one. *PLEASE NOTE*- STEVE VAI'S SOLO PERFORMED DURING THIS SONG WAS THE BEST GUITAR SOLO I'VE EVER SEEN. at one stage he even slid his finger from his plucking hand down a string to get a great sliding note which gelled to great effect in the solo. Sorry- musicians everywhere, i'm not a musician so i don't know the correct terminology. Johnny B.Goode- "Is there a Mr. Loaf here?" Brian asked. Meatloaf came out to tremendous applause. what a performance!! some great photos coming soon of meat and bri together. With A Little Help From My Friends- sang by jason. This was great, just great. the set was too short though. the performance was played just by the eiffel tower at the poolside on the Paris Hotel roof. Ever seen the old clip of the Beatles playing on the roof in London? all the crowd were looking up. I can only imagine that's what happened In Las Vegas. Everyone outside the Paris Casino were probably looking up. This was Queen History people. no mistake about it. |

it was brilliant! |
Mr. Teatime 12.09.2004 14:24 |
can anyone tell me how roger handled songs like stone cold crazy, which require fast drumming? I'm wondering how well he is able to drum these days. I assume they had chad drumming as well since roger probably wasn't up to it on his own. |
iron eagle 12.09.2004 19:53 |
actually he handled it quite well chad also played during it at the end chad went over to rogers drum set--and started banging away there with roger... roger was loving every minute of it too |

I hope Roger did enjoy it so much that he can convince Brian to go on tour soon. Are there some recordings available on the net?? Looking to the pictures, it looks like Brian and Roger are extremely fit. The seem to be in a good shape. |
Jjeroen 13.09.2004 05:49 |
Alriiight! Pleasant surprise indeed to see DSMN and SCC! With all those musicians at their side I can imagine this gig was a blast. Any recordings???!!! Bootleggers please get in touch ;-) |
Arnaldo "Ogre-" Silveira 13.09.2004 11:40 |
Like Roger uses to say: It's been a long time since they rock'n rolled!!! :D I NEED those recordings!!!! Cheers, Ogre- |

I doubt we'll ever hear a recording of this guys :( Same goes with the Walk of Fame gig. Why the hell do they record it? To just let it rot away in the vaults |
Mr. Scully 14.09.2004 03:48 |
"Why the hell do they record it? To just let it rot away in the vaults" No, actually the arrogant American guy who apparently recorded it (or supplied recording equipment, I don't remember), is proud of it now. I guess he recorded it just to boost his ego. I saw the video (to avoid questions: I don't have it) and the sound quality is bad (distortion). Anybody with a $30 microphone would do a much better job. |
