I like the Hot Space album. It's not my favorite, but it's interesting, to say the least. And plus, it's got a great cover. I'm using that as my wallpaper on my computer right now. Anyway, I'm not really sure. Roger and Brian did Queen + 5ive to get Queen's music across to a younger audience, so they had good intentions. Actually, the thing that embarasses me isn't Queen, but what happened in the 80's in the US around the time of Hot Space. They deserved much more success here, and only received it for Another One Bites The Dust/CLTCL. We really neglected the band after The Game. :( |

The Highlander soundtrack songs are embarrassingly schmaltzy to me. Very gooey and overdone in an unpleasant way. I know a lot of people like them, but I cringe a bit when I hear them. --Egret |

Queen do seem to have a reputation as being a "gay band" I'm often asked about this. My reaction is always Queen were 25 % Gay, therefore they were not a gay band! The gay issue seems to discourage teenagers mostly but i think most eventually come round to the fact that a great band are great band no matter the lead singers preferences. |

nope, i agree with m@att. these days they are milking it to the extreme. sure, you have to respect that concert cos it was for charity. if it hadnt been for charity it would have been different, admit it. |
YourValentine 09.07.2004 19:03 |
I am not embarrased about anything Queen did or do. I can only be embarrassed about my own mistakes or stupid things I say or do. I am not responsible for anything Queen or their management are doing, so why should I feel bad about it? In the same way I am not proud about anything the band did, it's not my achievement. If you feel embarrassed about Freddie's sexual orientation, you should re-assess your values. There is nothing shameful about being gay. |

I'm not embarrassed about anything that has to do with Queen. But what I hate is how so many people in my area reconize Queen as a gay band (when indeed only Freddie was gay which I have no problem with, I think it teaches us to have open minds because wonderful people could be gay and it doesn't matter) and nothing more. I wish everyone could see how much of a phenomenon Queen was. I know Queen is very famous in a lot of places, but not as much where I live. |
the oppositionist 09.07.2004 19:20 |
thing is they arent queen anymore. its like changing pepsi into fanta and still calling it pepsi when clearly it isnt what it used to be. ps i hope both those companies pay me for that bit of free advertising, doh! lol |

The only thing i find slightly embarassing is when a Queen song comes on and people talk about how wierd the guy that singing sounds. Now obviusly they dont think outside the box very well and can not see Freddie Mercury's tremendouse talent. |
KillerQueen840 09.07.2004 19:23 |

Cool Cat, Who Needs You, Delilah, Misfire, One Year of Love, In Only Seven Days, The Miracle (song), It's A Hard Life, (and a few others). OK, I know I'm sort of picking on Deacy a bit. It's just that the list of his songs I honestly LIKE is but one song long... AOBTD. Oh how I wish it weren't so! Someone used the word "schmaltzy" and I have to say that pretty much sums up the CAUSE of the embarrassment... I think they finally got "schmaltz" right on These Are The Days Of Our Lives and A Winter's Tale (I don't think Deacy penned either of those), but they had far too many failures over the years. Why didn't they just team up with Streisand back in the 70's if they were so bloody intent on going that easy listening "schmaltz" route? (THANK GOD THEY DIDN'T) Or did Streisand secretly appear on "The Man In The Shadows"? ;-) (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) |

There's absolutely NOTHING that embarrases me about Queen!!! And I mean Queen while Freddie was alive. For God's sake, I adore them, how could I ever be embarrased about them?? There are certainly some things Brian and Roger did that made me feel sad, like Pepsi comercials etc. But not embarrasing.. And I was always extremely proud on them, and thir music, don't give a damn about people saying they were gay band and similar shit. It just shows how ignorant and narrowminded some people are. Concerning Sun City, not embarrased at all. Queen were never a political band (as they themselves said many times) and they wanted to play where ever people wanted to see their shows. So once again, I'm extremely proud on them!!!! |
iGSM 10.07.2004 06:36 |
Yes, the homosexuality of Freddie sort of erks me a bit when the topic 'Queen' comes up. It's usually something like 'Queen, they were gay' so I come back with 'Shut up, you fucking faggot' and bash them to death with The Works vinyl. Something like that, any way. Another thing that embarrases me is that people don't know Queen. I Want it All came on T.V for a car ad..can't remember which one..later on I played both version and someone piped in with 'Someone made a long song of the ad?'.. I sat and cried for months. |

If you're not gay unfriendly then how come "that gay thing" bothers you??.. Call me crazy but this makes no sense. |
Brianmay1975 10.07.2004 10:58 |
Well I don't think they embarass me with anything. I love them so much! They changed my life! But it's true that I get very angry when I hear unpleasant things about Freddie's sexual orientation (I mean when people look at him despisingly because of that, which really drives me out of my mind - why are they so interested in his private life?), it's that many people say that if he were straight, he wouldn't have died, but as long as I know everybody can get the bloody disease from anyone. So... And what makes me angry is that nobody says anything about Elton John, David Bowie, George Michael, they're gays too, but no one seems to notice that because they're still alive. Poor Freddie! |
geeksandgeeks 10.07.2004 11:28 |
The thing that embarrasses me most about Queen is that one of the songs they are going to be remembered for, among semi-fans and above, is "Tie Your Mother Down". I need to go mourn for a bit. Just talking about it depresses me. |

Well, I can't find any Queen t-shirts. :-( However, I think the chances may be getting better, since my local Hot Topic got in some David Bowie (finally!) and The Doors t-shirts, two musical acts the store never showcased. Scully, please don't say you don't/didn't know that 'queen' is another word for 'a camp/gay man'? That would just be unbelievable. Why do you think Fred said "of course I was aware of the connotations..." when asked about how he came up with the band's name? Here's what dictionary.com has to say about it: "Queen (noun) (6)Offensive Slang. Used as a disparaging term for a homosexual man." |
goinback 14.07.2004 04:02 |
I get embarrassed that Queen is sometimes known as a pop band rather than the hard rock/metal band I fell in love with. The "Greatest Hits" CDs that just contain the Top 40 singles don't help. And I'll wear a Queen shirt just so I can spite the people that don't remember what a hard rock force Queen were here in the US in the '70s. If anyone is actually dumb enough to say they're a "gay band" I'd have to laugh and then pick apart the stupid bands they listen to. |

PEOPLE STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What embarasses me most of all is the 'gay' discussion about Queen among people and especially among fans. Who decided that Queen (I mean the group itself and their creative activity) is a "gay group", even a little bit???????????????????????????????? Freddie's sexual preferences were his private business and THAT'S ALL. Neither his solo nor Queen's music/lyrics/videos have NOTHING to do with the gay world at all! Freddie & Queen simply invented their OWN UNIQUE style and their creative activity was always of a UNIVERSAL APPEAL. It is opened for various audience (no matter what age, sex, nation, race, religion, society class, ocupation, sexual orientation, political addiction, music tastes you are of). That is the seret of Queen's great success and the reason for having millions of fans all around the world (whose number grows annually)!!! Besides, normal people should be interested in artist's work and career but not in his bed-matters... Kiss my ass if I am not right!.............. |
Gunpowder Gelatine 14.07.2004 04:59 |
I'd hope that most fans don't think of Queen as a gay band. But other people who don't really know anything about Queen just assume that the entire band was gay, either because of Freddie or because of how 'glam' or 'over-the-top' they were. And a lot of people dismiss the band because they think they were gay, although I don't know what sexual preference has to do with the music. |

The only thing that was embarassing to me was back at the times when people still judged others for their gayness. Which is I mean the most ridiculous argument of all, the argument that denotes denial of one´s own homosexuality. WE are free people, free to ourselves and to this world, we ain´t supposed to be the same and to act the same. What is normal to majority automatically gets the stamp of being "normal", but what doesn´t fit to this "majority" is so-called "weird, unnormal". Yet, Freddie came along to this world to show us a big difference between what´s good or bad, normal and unnormal, glorious or disgracelful. He brought us the message in the bottle, that we shouldn´t look upon the poeple in this "meassurement" way. As we are all good or bad, according to what we do and how we act. Thus, the gays are as much honourable people as the rest. Freddie was the real prophet of his time I believe. He showed us, there´s nothing to be embarassed about, cos it´s always about human kindness, not about the differences between us, not about the things that part us, but things that unite us, exactly like Queen! |

Sorry, but this is actually the famous "Vesti la gibba" line from the opera "I Pagliacci" by Puccini. Freddie thought me how to love it and to say that this part of It´s a hard life sounds embarrassing, is something that I disagree with. Why should it be embarrassing? Puccinni is a classic, his operas are the most wonderful I´ve heard, I even cried when listening to them. Ridi Pagliacci is one of the most beautiful pieces the world will ever know. And if you know the story behind the opera, then you should know it´s heartbreaking story of teo lovers. It has to sound dramatic, if the main hero, Pagliacci, kills his fiance our of jealousy. No? |

I guess, in English speaking countries, where the word QUEEN has other meanings besides “Female Monarch”, Queen is losing a lot of coins due to low sales of their secondary merchandise like clothing, posters, bumper/stickers….etc. I know that the choice of this name was Freddie’s eccentric idea, and I respect and support it with all my hurt, but from purely commercial point of view........wrong move. |

In Romania the adults usually know who he is, but the youngsters usually no (except for me - I'm 17 - and quite a few rockers)... I was once talking about Queen to some of my schoolmates. One of them said: "Queen? Never heard of them". The other said in a very arrogant way: "What?! You've never heard of them? Come on: Queen, Freddie Mercury: he was gay, he was drinking, he was on drugs and he died of AIDS... Oh and he had a beautiful voice too"... I really felt like breaking down and crying... |

and he could have been drinking, having sexual orgies, be a gay, be a drug addict....whatever he wanted to be, he would be without a shame. If someone depicts him the way your friend did, I would only laugh at that silly, narrowminded person. While he judges Freddie, I love Freddie. With all that it takes. And I know, as millions of his true fans around the world, the way he was was just great. He was the most significant character of many generations, something like a brand new, radical movement. A fresh air that we were breathing. Now he's untouchable. A Legend. |
