i think so, yes. e.g. everybody says how great Clean Machine or Rock It are, but nobody ever mentions that John had a great talent to write beautiful little songs. anyway i always think that most queen fans like him songwriter wise the most. (he's after freddie my favourite songwriter) |
inu-liger 24.02.2004 14:03 |
What is Clean Machine? |
LucyCoeCollins 24.02.2004 14:04 |

exactly Impromptu, John was a great songwriter :) |
Mayboy 24.02.2004 14:29 |
In Only Seven Days was great too :) |
FriedChicken 24.02.2004 15:22 |
Johns a great songwriter. But i don't think he was the best songwriter in Queen. My list 1. Brian 2. Freddie 3. John 4. Roger |

I love misfire! And don't forget spread your wings! |
geeksandgeeks 24.02.2004 16:05 |
not to mention all the instrumentals off the Flash Gordon soundtrack that everyone always forgets about. |
Mr.Jingles 24.02.2004 17:51 |
Let's not forget that John was influenced by soul, R&B, reggae, and other black genres. Which helped Queen get a more pop oriented vibe, and a funkier sound to make their music trascend to other genres other than rock. |
LucyCoeCollins 24.02.2004 19:43 |
ITA stands for I TOTALLY AGREE;-) |
Mona Lisa 24.02.2004 19:44 |
John is my second favorite member after Freddie. I also think that he wrote some awsome songs. Spread your wings, Misfire, and Another one Bites the dust all rock. My favorite, though, is You and I. |
Matti 24.02.2004 21:14 |
I love John's songs! Though underrated maybe because he doesn't sing.....? Who knows. |
Saffron Caribou 24.02.2004 21:30 |
I agree with Stone Cold Crazy there. Perhaps John's underrated status is due that he never sang on the albums. Also his stage pressence is deemed forgettable to non Queen fans, and surpisingly, to some Queen fans as well. I'll admit that at first I wasn't that fond of John. However, as I got more into Queen I learnt to appreciate his songwriting. Most of the Queen songs that I love are written by him, such as You and I, Misfire, and Spread Your Wings to name some. Freddie will always be my favourite songwriter of the group. John is a very close second. Brian is a distant third, and Roger is dead last. IMO Sorry Roger fans. |
Sebastian 25.02.2004 01:30 |
I think Fred is the most underrated member. Of course many many many people love his voice, and a good percentage of queen fans admire him as singer. But what about his skills as pianist, arranger, songwriter...? That stupid legend that in the last years he hardly composed, when in Miracle and Innuendo he was by far the main songwriter, numerically, and the three post-Innuendo songs are all written or co-written by him. |
Lawyeris 25.02.2004 02:50 |
The most underrated Queen member was .... Spike Edney. Actually he created the most popular and favourite Queen songs from Seven Seas of Rhye to The Show must go on and played main guitar parts in such songs as Now I'm here, Bohemian Rhapsody, It's late, Tear it up, I want it all, Hitman and so on. He was so talented, that other members had hiding him, 'cause lots of groups wanted to tempt him join their groups: Boomtown Rats, Sigue Sigue Sputnic, the Sparks, 10CC, Deacon Blue, Thin Lizzy... this list could last forever. Also, due to this, he played backstages most, and only through Hammer to Fall and Crazy little thing, also Tutti Frutti on Magic tour group let him appear on stage. Then as a compensation for all that wrong, Roger created group Cross especially for dear Spikie. But he wasnt happy with that, 'cause all his heart and mind belonged to Queen. After this he created song about himself "Invisible Man". After Freddie Mercury died, mostly thanx to his endevours, was organized huge Tribute to Freddie at Wembley stadium. Now he lives quiet life, joins some solo and charity projects, recently takes part in musical WWRY. But few people know he's that secret fifth Queen member... |
roland 25.02.2004 05:06 |
oh shit, i wrote "like him the most", of course i meant "like him the least", but yeah, I'm glas that so many love his songwriting. he wrote more poppy songs, or funky ongs, but not really rock songs. but yes, i think that's my favorite's list: Freddie John May Roger i don't like roger's songs, even Radio Ga Ga i dislike... oh sorry, and yes I meant IILWMC with Clean machine. i think that song is totally crap. yes that's right, freddie was not lazy with his songwriting. he did actually a lot in 1983 and then from 1987 to 1991. remember all his solo songs from 1983 (which were released in 1985), his Barcelona songs from 1987, the miracle songs and his big influence on Innuendo!!! i think his laziest time was from 1977 til 1982. Have a look at The Game. his songs were not that great, though I love Play The Game and Crazy thing, i didn't get too much intp DTsuicide. |
Azmandaman 25.02.2004 05:20 |
John rocks!! dont think he is underated at all, he talked with the Bass sound and shines with his number one hits, and the song that neva made it big he still rocks it!! |
Sebastian 25.02.2004 06:37 |
About Freddie's "laziness": 1977 was in fact a hard year for him, personally, so he didn't write too much. Note that 'News Of The World' is the only album (together with 'Flash') in which Brian wrote more songs than Freddie (although in 'Flash Gordon' many of those songs are just variations of 'Flash Theme' or 'The Hero'). 1978 Fred was the main songwriter in 'Jazz', with five songs against four by Brian, two by John, two by Roger. Apparently he wrote a lot of songs in the Game period but they had the deal of include three songs by Brian, three songs by Freddie, two by Roger and two by John. Roger recommended Fred to put the other songs (I guess 'Beautiful Day' is one of them) in a solo album but Fred said he didn't want to make an album of leftovers. |
roland 25.02.2004 06:45 |
an' which are the songs? "Crazy Little Thing" "Don't Try Suicide Play The Game and Crazy was written in 1979! well, that's right in 1978 he wrote many songs, too. Don't Stop Me Now is one of my favourite songs ever. |
Sebastian 25.02.2004 07:12 |
I didn't say CLTCL was written in '79, I said it was in the Game period (June '79 - May '80) |
Ian R 25.02.2004 10:31 |
Why was 1977 a hard year for Fred? I've never heard that before. |
Sebastian 25.02.2004 10:45 |
I don't know his biography but I think that's around when he broke up with Mary |
roland 25.02.2004 10:58 |
no, i think that was in 1978 or 1979. but anyway, you said he wrote many songs for The Game but i only know 3 and one of them was written in 1979 and the other 2 maybe in early 1980. and i think he never "broke up" with mary, it was not that bad, i guess. though it must be hard for a woman, if your lover tells you that he was gay!!!! |
Sebastian 25.02.2004 11:01 |
He was bisexual, not gay |
roland 25.02.2004 11:09 |
yes, of course. i know, it must fuck up you, but i don't think he was into boys and girls the same time. maybe in the 70ies with mary, but in the 80ies he was, i think so, gay as a goose. i don't like some theories like John lennon was gay, too, but c'mon, freddie was gay in the 80ies!! i mean, some people want tu suggest themselves that a star was bi instead of a homo, cause being bi is not that bad as being gay, what? |
Matti 25.02.2004 18:55 |
Who cares what they are!? |
iGSM 25.02.2004 19:18 |
Parakeetman. If I were Freddie I'd've used Moustache attack and dedicated The Game to a distant relative. But on the John topic; yes. Definately more under rated Queen member. But I like him none the less. The goofy dancing and the bird nest hair must count for something. |
Lara 26.02.2004 02:19 |
Maybe John's underrated because he wants to be underrated? Nevertheless I bet his (ex :()band mates knew his value and that was fine with him. More, apart from his musical talent,John has always been very skilled and gifted as far as business side of IT was concerned. And not forget his practical and science mind! And I love Spread Your Wings,d..!!This is about Sammy who was low but he kept doing in everything which I'm gonna never forget!Thanks,d..!:) |
iGSM 26.02.2004 02:37 |
Sammy David Jr. heh, no. Not really. |
The Mir@cle 26.02.2004 03:13 |
A Bass guitarist is like the subwoofer of your speaker set. You only miss him when he's not there. Maybe that's the reason he's a bit underrated. I agree he was a great songwriter. |
roland 26.02.2004 07:00 |
and a nice guy, too. |
Bohardy 26.02.2004 07:13 |
"You only miss him when he's not there". - As opposed to all those other people/things that you miss when they ARE there? |
The Mir@cle 26.02.2004 09:57 |
I try to say that a Bass guitarist seems to have a minor roll in a band. But if there's no bass guitarist, you hear a kind of emptiness in the sound. |
Bohardy 26.02.2004 14:03 |
Yeah, I know what you meant. I just couldn't miss the opportunity to be pedantic. |
7Innuendo7 26.02.2004 17:17 |
It's hard to pick the best JRD song, they're all great! Spread Your Wings is mostly my favorite, although You're My Best Friend is more or less perfect IMHO |
Lord Blackadder 27.02.2004 12:57 |
i think john is the most underrated and i think its not done on purpose its just that alot of bass players are not seen as much as guitar, drums and vocal. except for among queen fans alot of people probably wouldnt know john deacon by name. and he was very quiet too. But he is/was great. I love pretty much all of his songs. Especially you're my best friend, spread your wings and need your loving tonight. |
The Real Wizard 04.03.2004 13:16 |
"I didn't say CLTCL was written in '79, I said it was in the Game period (June '79 - May '80)" What? Then how else did they play the song every night on the Crazy tour, Nov-Dec 79? An identital jam session with the same lyrics every night? "He was bisexual, not gay" No, he was gay. Just because he dated a woman before coming out the closet doesn't mean he was bi. "A Bass guitarist is like the subwoofer of your speaker set. You only miss him when he's not there." and "I try to say that a Bass guitarist seems to have a minor roll in a band" Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh man.................. how wrong is that? I can't believe these posts weren't replied to! For bands who have crap bassists, this is true. If you listen to things like The Eagles, AC/DC and Black Sabbath, the bass is indeed the chord's tonic note an octave lower, and therefore a complete waste of time and space. However, if you listen to uhmm.... QUEEN, you'll note that the bass is not only the driving force, but it can be its own instrument; far more than just the "subwoofer". Listen to any Rush or Dream Theater album and tell me the bass is the subwoofer. Obviously you have no idea what you're talking about, MartijnCruijff, since John Deacon is one of the most original bassists ever. Listen to tracks like Misfire, The Millionaire Waltz, and You're My Best Friend. Brilliant bass work. But I don't even know why I'm posting in this topic... it's been established long ago that QZ is not the place to have a musically intellectual discussion. |
FriedChicken 04.03.2004 15:23 |
haha amen! |
Sebastian 04.03.2004 17:18 |
> I didn't say CLTCL was written in '79, I said it was in the Game period (June '79 - May '80) I'm sorry I miswrote the year. What I ment is that I didn't say it was written in '80. My mistake |
The Real Wizard 04.03.2004 19:25 |
Hehe no problem, Sebastian. Now we await a reply from our anti-bass chum. |
akindofmagic 05.03.2004 00:31 |
Freddie had,in fact, a girlfriend around mid 80's(the decade, not the girl's age, lol). Her name was Barbara Valentine, and she was a very well known German actress. She died one or two years ago. Freddie loved her for her extremly huge breats! |
The Real Wizard 05.03.2004 12:41 |
They had a sexual relationship? That's news to me... |
spreadurwingz 06.03.2004 15:32 |
Guys. John is underrated, yes, but that doesn't mean that he is the best! He is a very good song-writer, but its just that during concerts, he doesn't do much. My favorite list goes: Freddie Brian Roger John This odesn't mean that I don't like John; I love 'im! I hold the highest respect for them all. He just doesn't get as much. Its like this: $6,000,000,000,000,000,000; $7,000,000,000,000,000,000; $8,000,000,000,000,000,000; $9,000,000,000,000,000,000. Of course, you'd like to have the $9,000,000,000,000,000,000, but would definately settle for $6,000,000,000,000,000,000, right? |
The Mir@cle 08.03.2004 04:51 |
I have no doubts about John's skills Guitar Hero. Actually, I think he's one of the best too. But I think that lots of people do not realise that. |
spreadurwingz 14.03.2004 10:54 |
Ii like Queen for their personality; they are great. If they sounded the same, but never said stuff on stage, and we didn't have the interviews and stuff, they would be boring. |
iGSM 15.03.2004 04:49 |
More often that not I will be humming the bass line to a Queen song, rather than the guitar/vocals.. why just today I was humming Staying Power..the more you know! |
Mitti 16.03.2004 06:07 |
Freddie once said: 'we will stick together until we fucking die' (or something like that) well, john didn't. Or does any of you hear something from/about him these days? He has to do whatever he likes but I think that's the reason way he is not so populair anymore... I still think that he is damned cute and my list would be: 1-16. Brian (long time nothing, haha!) 2. Roger 3. John 4.Freddie |
fairy_mercury 16.03.2004 08:09 |
ok, i was reading the spread on Queen in mojo mag and roger said john wrote them a nice long letter saying he supports whatever they do but he doesn't want to be a part of it (or something like that!)...i dont think he is underated or unpopular, i just think that because roger and brian are still doing things it just puts john in a shadow, which by the sounds of it is where he wants to be! bless him! we all know his value! ;D |
The Mir@cle 16.03.2004 08:20 |
And we all know he has a lot children. That's his priority, you have to accept that. |
