link Rarely do I speak in absolutes when it comes to music. But I will here - if you are a Queen fan and don't think this kicks ass, then you are dead inside. This is one of the best Queen covers ever done. Gary, Nuno and the boys absolutely slay. The arrangement and delivery are spotless, and full of energy and sheer joy. |

Loved it!!!!! Always love Extreme, and their rendition of Queen songs is always terrific - energetic and totally entertaining! I'd love to see Brian and Roger do a concert with Gary and Nuno. Now THAT'S a gig I'd definitely go for. |

I happened upon this a few days ago when I was watching Queen with my 17 month old daughter. She's generally not interested in TV, which isn't a bad thing, but she loves watching Queen! Great taste at a young age. Anyway, I was really impressed with this cover, it sounds awesome. Thumbs up from me |

ACTUALLY. ... it wasn't one man and his dog. I'd posted this in the GENERAL section over a month ago. Nuno plays at lucky strike Hollywood from time to time with some of his ex players from DRAMAGODS (Restivo and Ferlazzo) This place was PACKED....only you're seeing the viewpoint of the cameraman near the door between the closed barrier (*about 6-8 feet from the audience) Notably, Brian May supposedly ATTENDED (*this was after the *June 26/27 gigs at Hollywood Bowl: so i kinda FIGURED he'd be there, since Nuno was also having Gary as a guest that night) ...however he did not perform. I have a piss poor recording of it because I'd left my usual recorder in my ride's car coming back from the QAL show. Thankfully this person recorded it. Mine sounds terrible. I desperately tried to record something because it appeared as if no-one acknowledges the significance of Gary and Nuno jamming together. BRIAN was expected to play on TYMD. But opted out by being "a little under the weather". It was SOO packed that having stayed in front for 3 hours, i couldn't look back and see him. ..however many others acknowledged that he WAS in attendance. They also played BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY with "CHOIR RIOT" (Nuno's joke) .it was a lot of fun. But believe me, it was VERY packed |

Unless it was a gig for colleges in the 1990's i don't think people would be as forward thinking and supportive/promotional about such an event. They'd really do a number though.....Gary and Nuno are such staunch real fans that it'd be something really special |
pittrek 05.09.2017 07:32 |
A pretty unusual choice for a song to cover, but a really good performance of the song. But I don't agree it's better than the MK performance, that's my favourite one. |

^Pat Badger wasn't there and neither was recent drummer Kevin Figuerido. (*original drummer Paul Geary became a successful band manager) So. ...technically just Nuno and Gary. They're great little events. I don't go every week, some are far better than others... they even had an evening with Jackson Browne once. (*YouTube it for the short set)...a great treasure off of Hollywood and Highland. I made it a point to tell the guys "WOW, you actually made that song sound GOOD!"...Gary defended it saying "I love Staying Power"... Whenever Nuno plays it seems like he makes it a point to play something no-one would ever play/had never played live before. Half a year ago, this girl I'm dating went cuckoo as women can do...and i missed Nuno perform MJ's "SPEED DEMON" ...a truly ridiculous thing to try to cover live. |

It's ok, nothing to jump up and down about. The original had really good potential. If Queen performed it like they did live and worked on those lryics a bit more it could of been an Anthem. But should of doesn't cut it. The songs decent enough, not one of Queens best. |

Matz don't be an asshole! Did you not see my comment where I said they needed too work on those lryics? Hinting that the lyrics are pretty bad, but I say it had potential because the basic frame of the song was there, proven by the live performance....the chorus was catchy. But the rest of the lryics was terrible. This was the start of Freddie getting lazy and can't be bothered creating great music anymore. Putting in that extra work wasn't as Important as partying. |

Brian May said that about MJ and HS. Maybe he knows something we don't? Or maybe He was talking nonsense? I could see Jackson being influenced by The Game more than Hot Space. They nailed it on The Game. A perfect mix of funk and rock. Hot Space sucked. |

Haha. ^ yeah. Just joking MikeHunt (say that 3x fast followed by "brings all the boys to the yard"....actually proving that lyrics aren't essential to songs being big) I've always thought the only redeeming thing about the song was the horn arrangement. Someone has pointed out before that the riff is very similar to Led Zeppelin's "On the tiles" which i totally hear. ...but staying power= cocaine nightmare of a song I made sure to give my props to Nuno and Gary for actually making it sound....GOOD! |
mike hunt 08.09.2017 18:12 |
Queen live made it sound good, not extreme. Extreme while good at the tribute concert wasn't very good as songwriters. Never really were that good. I remember when they had that 1 popular ballad, sort of their Love Of My Life. I'm not all that Impressed by their version of Staying Power. There is a reason why they fizzeled out Quickly. |

Grunge was marketable, so the record labels put more promo $ into grunge. Popularity does not necessarily mean quality, and lack of popularity does not mean lack of quality. If it does, then Jellyfish was a crap band too. |
mike hunt 09.09.2017 02:06 |
your 100 percent right about that , lot of bands I love never made it big, but i'll stand by my other comments. Queen at the Bowl was great, and Improved the song by miles. Extrems verson is ok. Still think they're average at best as a band. I love a lot of underground bands. Check out a band called Into Another, never made it big, but they had a much bigger impact on me than other big 90's bands like Nirvana. |
matt z 09.09.2017 02:25 |
I think Extreme started out as an imitation style influence band and it showed with the mostly juvenile songs on their first album. I'd still take 5 cuts from it as damn good. Pornograffitti was pretty great as a playful cohesive album, still a bit too 80's for me. III SIDES TO EVERY STORY was absolutely fucking brilliant, with only one of the singles REST IN PEACE (and the cassette cut "Don't go" (or whatever it's called) not doing it for me. WAITING FOR THE PUNCHLINE was unique and though they didn't hit grunge, they touched on it with narcissism and gloom. Some great riffs and moods in that album. And a favorite: MIDNIGHT EXPRESS SAUDADES DE ROCK suffered from lack of a true producers producer. Otherwise it's a great album (*I'll always prefer NUNO'S version of "Interface" better), but suffice it to say it shows its influences heavily. STAR = DEAD ON TIME, QUEEN COMFORTABLY DUMB = NUNO (SOLO) - GOD TOOK A PICTURE GHOST - (shitty ass) COLDPLAY FLOWER MAN = early POLICE notably NEXT TO YOU/PEANUTS SUNRISE - LED ZEP SLIDE = FAME - CARLOS ALOMAR- BOWIE- JOHN LENNON but it had some stellar Extreme originals LAST HOUR KING OF THE LADIES TAKE US ALIVE (*old country rnr throwback) And if you've never heard Nuno's solo work (including MOURNING WIDOWS, POPULATION ONE, DRAMAGODS, also his bit with SATELLITE PARTY) then you're kinda missing out (IMHO) |
dysan 09.09.2017 07:32 |
I think they did it as a nice tribute to the original. Fair play. Never liked them (it was a bad era for music for me - they seemed a little too drama school) but understand the quality of what they did in that area. |

I'm Canadian, going to London and will see Extreme at the o2 in Brixton on December 20, cannot wait, hope they do Staying Power. While everybody's opinions are as valid or meaningless as mine, if Extreme is an "average" band, then Mike Hunt, you've got to share your musical tastes with me. Pat Badger is criminally underrated as a bassist, he's playing with Nuno FFS so he can't be an root note beat keeper, and he's a great singer live to boot. Kevin Figuerido is a fantastic drummer and bring more to Extreme live than Paul Geary did IMHO, Gary Cherone is one of rock's best lyricists and a great front man (and a sometimes dodgy live singer), and they write great songs across all genres. Nothing average about them. And there's Nuno. And that version of SP rocks. |
dysan 09.09.2017 16:31 |
But they are totally square. Totally unfitting name. |
Sheer Brass Neck 09.09.2017 17:25 |
Fair enough, Dysan, I'm not here to define what square is in terms of a band, but they are all over the map musically much like Queen, hence the name. III Sides has more musical diversity on it than many major acts entire catalogues have, and if you don't like their music or their un-hipness that is cool :) |
dysan 09.09.2017 18:55 |
Yep. Like I said earlier on, I just never took to them. They weren't the Manics or Suede so didn't get a look in :) |
dysan 09.09.2017 18:56 |
...Both of who, incidently, had their fair share of squareness :) |
mike hunt 09.09.2017 19:59 |
Like Queen were the hippest band around? One of the reasons why Queen wern't bigger in the States is because they didn't have the cool factor as an ACDC or Guns And Roses. These days it sort of evened out. Queen are pretty big here, they do good on classic rock polls on the radio, though a cool band like The Doors do edge them out most of the time. Not by much, Queen are bigger here than people think. Extreme are another story. They didn't have the creativity of Queen. They were pretty boys with average talent. |

EXTREME stands for a new band featuring Ex- members from THE DREAM (Gary and Paul) So. ...it's truly "Ex Dream", as Nuno was big in a band called Sinful at the time. Around this time I also liked L7 - so the 'square' tag is nearly redundant. And *whispers* Ugly Kid Joe (hey, I was young - and I still like their Ugly As They Wanna Be EP) - they got their name because they supported Pretty Boy Floyd and didn't have a name yet. |

^^^ That's great to know. Is there an ideal time to arrive for General Admission? In North America you buy seats, I believe Brixton is General Admission and I want to close to the floor. Thanks for the info, any Dan Reed Network stuff you'd recommend? |
cmsdrums 13.09.2017 19:45 |
Brixton is quite a wide venue from left to right across the stage, so good chance to get right near the front if that's your thing; however the best sound is usually heard if you're standing a bit further back. Bearing in mind the U.K. May well be very cold in late Dec I don't want to drive too early and stand outside, but will aim for 45 mins b core doors and should be fine. There is a balcony too but not sure if those are general admission too or specific tickets marked for upstairs. Dan Reed Network released a 'best of' collection titled 'Anthology' a couple of years back which is an ideal starting point, but any of their albums would do - 'Slam' from 1989 was produced by Nile Rodgers so has a really funky edge, 93's follow up 'The Heat' is slightly heavier but still with a groove, and their come back album from last year 'Fight Another Day' is a great contemporary and more mature rock/pop/funkier album. Enjoy! |
