“Britain’s most regal band awaits your presence…” Melody Maker, December 1975 Queen - A Night At The Odeon - Hammersmith 1975 - Multi Format release November 20 December 24, 1975. London’s Hammersmith Odeon. Onstage at this legendary venue, the four members of Queen are bringing to a close a ground-breaking show, transmitted live on BBC TV, and also bringing to a climax the most eventful and exciting year in their careers so far – one that has taken them from the UK to America to Japan, sealing their transition from ambitious upstarts into one of the biggest and most important bands of the era - and beyond. Forty years later, this groundbreaking show officially takes to the World Stage. On November 20, Queen - A Night At The Odeon - Hammersmith 1975 is released on CD, DVD, SD Blu-Ray, 2 LP vinyl, Super Deluxe Box Set and digitally through Virgin EMI. As well as a live recording of this legendary gig, the packages also include extra-special bonus features for the Queen fans. “This concert was very special because it was the first time we ever played a whole show completely live on TV … the Christmas Show,” says Brian May. “The quality, after great rescue work and transfer into the digital domain, is amazing. And the energy we had comes across very forcefully.” Featuring 15 tracks from their first four visionary albums, plus covers of four classic rock’n’roll staples delivered with characteristic panache, A Night At The Odeon - Hammersmith 1975 captures a band in full flight and radiating megawatts of self-confidence. Their latest single Bohemian Rhapsody – universally hailed as one of the most ground-breaking ‘pop’ songs ever released – was in the middle of its record-breaking nine week run at Number One in the UK charts. Their fourth album, A Night At The Opera (the most expensive record ever made to that point) found Queen’s grandiose vision coalescing into a breathtaking set of songs and ushered the band into a seat at rock’s top table (just three days after the concert, A Night At The Opera reached the top of the UK album charts). The Christmas Eve show was the climax of the 26-date ‘Queen Invite You To A Night At The Opera Tour’, which had begun mid-November and had already seen the band play four nights at the same venue a month earlier. Melody Maker magazine had trumpeted the tour with the words “Britain’s most regal band await your presence”, and the reviews of the previous shows had been ecstatic. “Queen and their music, presentation, production – everything about them says that they are more important than any other band you’ve heard,” wrote British rock magazine Sounds. “Instead of simply treading the well-worn paths to pop glory, they have made their own paths,” added The Sun. By the time the band returned to Hammersmith on Christmas Eve, they were truly firing on all cylinders. No expense had been spared, from the stellar light show which lent a spectacular visual element to the night’s proceedings to the suitably lavish white Bechstein grand piano which had been hired especially for this show. Nor had the band themselves overlooked the finer sartorial details. Freddie Mercury sported two different satin cat suits – one black one white – during the show, designed by Wendy deSmet with the singer’s input. Similarly, Freddie had painted the nails of his left hand black for the occasion, while Brian May had his (at the time) trademark white nails. But for all the stage dressing, every Queen concert was purely and simply about the performance – and this was no exception. Cherry-picked from Queen, Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack and the triumphant A Night At The Opera, the set list showed every facet of the band, from the ornate hard rock of Keep Yourself Alive and Seven Seas Of Rhye to the baroque grandeur of The March Of The Black Queen, from the heavy metal strut of Ogre Battle and Son And Daughter to the playful genre-bending of Bring Back That Leroy Brown and Queen’s breakthrough hit Killer Queen. It was also the tour when they first unleashed the soon-to-be-legendary Bohemian Rhapsody on an unsuspecting public – to a rapturous reception. Freddie Mercury and Brian May were the yin and yang leading from the front, while Roger Taylor and John Deacon proved themselves to be one of the greatest rhythm sections of the era. By the time they’d completed a rock’n’roll medley featuring hits by Elvis, Connie Francis, Gene Vincent and Shirley Bassey, they had the 5000-strong audience eating out of their hands. Decades before the phrase ‘multi-media’ became a buzzword, the Christmas Eve show stood as more than just a concert. It was simultaneously broadcast in stereo on BBC Radio 1 and on the BBC 2 television institution The Old Grey Whistle Test (the show’s host Bob Harris introduced the band onstage). Luckily, although the TV cameras were turned off before the band returned for their second encore, and consequently video footage of Seven Seas Of Rhye and See What A Fool I’ve Been doesn’t exist – the audio team did continue recording and so the CD and LP formats do feature the entire show. As a result of the coverage, the show was heavily bootlegged in subsequent years, appearing under such unlikely titles as Command Performance, Rhapsody In Red, Christmas At The Beeb, Cardiac Arrest and Halfpence. With the issue of A Night At The Odeon this legendary show has finally been given the pedestal it deserves, delivered in fitting style, featuring an incredible new audio mix in stereo and 5.1 surround-sound plus an absolute state-of-the-art restoration of the video. As well as audio and visual footage of the gig, the DVD and SD Blu-Ray versions feature two special bonus features – 'Looking Back At The Odeon’, a brand new 22-minute documentary featuring a previously unseen interview with Brian May and Roger Taylor by Old Grey Whistle Test presenter Bob Harris about the 1975 Hammersmith Odeon show, plus the rarely seen Live At The Budokan – Japan 1975 footage, featuring three songs (Now I'm Here, Killer Queen and In The Lap Of The Gods… Revisited) recorded during their legendary tour of the Far East. Says Bob Harris of that night: "Christmas eve 1975 marked an important moment in the history of the 'Old Grey Whistle Test' and Queen. The band were in party mood at the Hammersmith Odeon that night and no wonder. They had already spent the best part of a month at the top of the UK singles chart with the sensational 'Bohemian Rhapsody', the video for which had instantly redefined the presentation of music on TV. They were at the peak of their powers - confident and stage sharp at the end of a barnstorming UK tour. I donned top hat and tails to salute and introduce them before they played one of the best sets I had ever seen. It was an incredible night but it was more even than that. It was the moment Queen became superstars". The Super Deluxe Box Set also includes a never-before-heard recording from the pre-show soundcheck – something that no one outside of the band themselves knew existed until now. Queen - A Night At The Odeon - Hammersmith 1975 is released on November 20, 2015, via Virgin EMI. What does Freddie sing in "flick of the wrist"? :-) The box set - which is what die-hards like us are after - is very expensive given the fact almost no extra audio is included. Maybe someone should tell them that we're fans because of the music and not because of the beautiful tour itinerary by Brian's dad (such things are cool as extra but they seem to seem them as centre piece for bonus stuff...) |

Only one song from soundcheck on a vinyl. Wtf? |
dysan 12.10.2015 09:35 |
Well, that's all quite pedestrian. And what an awfully longwinded press release too. |
jondickens1 12.10.2015 09:40 |
I have to say it looks from the min or so they've done an amazing job with this. There seems to be a fair bit of auto tune going on tho, even from this clip. Only to be expected I suppose given IMO the concert wasn't one of Freddie's best vocal performances. However the visuals look stunning on 1st viewing. Why the hell tho is the sound check only available in the super deluxe box set? Personally I won't be buying that just for one piece of one piece of unreleased material (we all know it'll appear to download on YouTube or something given time. I will be getting the bluray.Disc and cd tho. |
anniestu44b 12.10.2015 09:41 |
Very disappointing indeed. Very average. I soundcheck track on 12" vinyl. Wtf, well seeing as i don't own a turntable I'll not be hearing that then. Could we not have had it on the CD too guys? Bollocks. And the cover pic is horrible! Bog standard Blu-Ray/CD for me. |
pittrek 12.10.2015 09:46 |
First live recording of Bohemian Rhapsody ??? Really? I thought they recorded other winter 75 shows. Also why is the trailer playing slower ? Or is it just me? Most notably Brighton Rock. Also, 1 song from the soundcheck? Are you fucking kidding me? And I have to pay 200 dollars to get it? Are you fucking kidding me? Never mind me, as usually I will bitch about it for a while but as usually I'm going to buy it anyway :( But wow, I expected nothing and STILL they managed to disappoint me |

I have to say I'm very happy to be getting this release in excellent quality after all these years (and purchasing numerous bootlegs of it), but putting the (ONLY ONE) soundcheck song in the box set and on vinyl is beyond taking the ............... (insert own expletive). Why couldn't they put it as an extra on the DVD/BluRay with a photo gallery? The artwork, think someone has been drinking too much herbal tea. I think my three year old could come up with something better with her crayons. |

If so, it's pretty useless to us who have no equipment to play, like me. 60 page hardback book containing previously unseen photographsOK, this could be interesting. Reproduction of ticket from the concertI sold mine on eBay because I considered it to be useless crap. Concert programmeUseless crap. I have mine somewhere probably if I didn't throw it out years ago. I think I read it once ? They're actually selling reproduction of balloons. ================================================================================================================================================ Content of CD + SD BD / DVD Track Listing 1. LOL. It's going to be the worst Queen Productions production. Look at this contrast level. It burried it. Like Caracas 1981 or some Hyde Park 1976 versions. But hey, this is OFFICIAL RELEASE! "First ever recorded Bohemian Rhapsody"? Whatever. They call it "restored and remastered". What?! I can do the same in VirtualDub and Audacity in 5 minutes. 3 of them would be loading the files. "Remixed"? The audio mix sounds the same to me. It's just LITTLE ECHO FILTER. What about the bonus video? What could it be? Another piece of 5/1/75, pieces of ITLOTG, Son And Daughter and other? Nope. "Let's put the same thing they have since Days of Our Lives release". The only surprising thing is Look Back at the Odeon, whatever it is. "You've taken all my money and you want more" |

I would advise everyone not to buy the boxset. Buy it, and you're basically telling QP that you're happy paying a lot of money for useless crap. Which will make them keep taking the easy path with the boxsets instead of actually start digging and find stuff of value. I do think this looks and sounds alright though - they've somewhat fixed the sound of the snare, and it isn't as overproduced as November's Rainbow. Will probably get the iTunes album + a DVD, then wait for the soundcheck to surface somewhere on the internet. |

I have no idea if more footage from May 1st exists from what they've put on this release, but if it does, then it's disappointing they chose NOT to include it all as a bonus disc, especially as this could have been the first official release of "Hangman". Bonus material from QPL is so minimal it's frustrating. Perhaps someone from the QPL camp would be kind enough to tell us if there IS any more footage in the archive from this Japanese show or whether THIS really is it. I don't see why there should be any secrecy about it and a bit of transparency every now and again promotes good faith from both sides. Incidentally, the three songs presented here are already on the Japanese BD of "Days Of Our Lives" released back in 2011, so a lot of people already have this footage and whilst it's "nice" of them to finally share it with the rest of the world, the rest of the Japanese footage (press conference, tea party) on that disc would have been appreciated. |

Fu... this. Another great oportunity misused. Instead of adding the hammy 79' they added practically NOTHING as bonus footage. It is nice we have an official release of this concert, but it was not something us fans hadn't seen in good quality before, since there are countless of bootlegs from the bbc 2009 broadcast that look almost the same as this "new" version. What a pity, I will be getting the cheapest version i think. I hope next year they do surprise us with a nice release like Rainbow in 14'. Hope to have Knebworth or Hyde park up there next year, that would be a very nice release indeed. |

In the trailer there's a vocal overdub @ 0:22. Here we go again. At the end of the day, I'm glad to see more 70s Queen hitting the shops. Years ago we were complaining that it was Wembley, Wembley and Wembley. Let's not lose sight of that. 2016-19 are likely going to have some great releases for Queen fans. But not all of them may be as mind-blowing as Rainbow. Don't set your expectations too high, folks. That way you're never disappointed. A lot of people are going to dig this, and that's ultimately all that matters. |

The release is a little disappointing regarding the content, maybe they simply don't have anything else to offer from '75, except silent Japan footage? However, if they are willing to release such a short concert as a standalone release, it does give me hope for a release of Hyde Park next year. |
dysan 13.10.2015 04:25 |
The 20 minute interview might have the press conference stuff? Who knows. As it is, all things considered, I do welcome this despite not being on a par with Rainbow '74. I mean, how could it really? Pricy though. I think a boycott of it would just make them think it was because Freddie didn't have a 'tache on the cover so might only serve to abort any more 'archival' releases. |

I don't know, just something more interesting then this. Don't they have any fantasy? Any clue what various collectors might find exciting? |

Yeah so we have to support it! Good points about the other material that could've been included. One hopes that the non-'75 stuff will be held over until a suitable release which I doubt! If this is to serve as the 40th Anniversary of Bo Rhap, I should imagine Brian May will go the whole hog to celebrate the 40th of We Will Rock You in 2017. Would Houston be considered the first performance of WWRY in as much as this is the first of Bo Rhap? Fingers Crossed. |

a bit disappointed as you, guys (most specially for that 12" single containing the most interesting piece of music on this set), but hey, crossing fingers for Hyde Park next year and hoping that eventual release will stand proudly next to the excellent Rainbow set. The boxset is of course very expensive. And there's no need for it I think. The Rainbow release is still very fresh. The other releases were enough. But I'm buying it anyway! :P The cover could be much better, still it's not bad. It's a shame that only Live At The Bowl has the entire band on the cover. Queen are not just Freddie! I think they could have exploited way better the xmas market, by announcing the release as special xmas tv show and making special xmas covers, kinda like a xmas present or something! Freddie Mercury "A Night At The Odeon"/a.k.a.: Freddie Mercury with his back up group Queen "A Night At The Odeon"/a.k.a. Freddie Mercury and Queen "A Night At The Odeon". I guess this in due time will allow the door to be open for Brian and Roger to be replaced for future members of Queen since according to the covers of so many live releases does not feature them. Especially since certain people claim the current line-up of Queen is not Queen anyway... |

Apart from overall deficiencies as pointed by some many above, I'm disappointed by the actual setlist. It's called "A Night at the Odeon" and contains only one song from ANATO?!? What the heck. There's a rule of thumb to step aside from a project when working on it to get a proper idea what it looks like from afar. Whoever created this clearly didn't even from a strictly scholastic "art technique" level the composition is completely opposing the direction of Freddie. It's a jarring oppositon that makes it look even trashier and tackier. Even the streaming flares pick an opposing direction. I think even if they'd put on one of those ugly kimono photos with a red stamp 1975 TOUR it works have looked better |

cmsdrums 18.10.2015 08:32 |
I'm not suprised they're getting slaughtered over price - how could they get it so wrong after the great Rainbow set?? They seem to think "well we put some merchandise in that and it worked well so we'll just do the same", forgetting that it's ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC. The Rainbow sets offered multiple variants to get what you want - this time they are putting the one real rarity (the soundtrack track) only on the unnecessary 12" vinyl in the box set, and hiking the price right up for a short length concert, and also hoping it will make people go out and their Rega turntable too I reckon. They think that the addition of the glossy booklet (nice though I'm sure it is) makes up for the lack of anything spectacular on the audio front...and they're just plain wrong on that. |
winterspelt 18.10.2015 15:51 |

I've not had time to compare but the new version of Bo Rap seems a lot easier on the ear. On the original broadcast he was way off, this version doesn't sound too bad at all. Whether it's autotune or overdubs, I'm not complaining. |
alberbal12 22.10.2015 06:05 |
I think it isn't an overdub, because for me it sounds the same as the 2009 version, or even the previous ones. The only i know is that the sound was cleaned completely, because of that we hear it so smoothly!!! I'm so "hammy" with that release, haha!! |
MercurialFreddie 22.10.2015 09:39 |
So they proved it that they've made a brand new restoration and it sounds excellent.... Also I don't know it's due to the autotune or fiddling around with vocal tracks but the Brighton Rock bit in the trailer sounds so melodic ! |
Enchlore 22.10.2015 16:33 |
Freddie's vocals were so very tampered with. I don't think it's as bad as Rainbow, though. The guitar brought up in Bohemian Rhapsody adds an extra layer, I think, so I like it. Early versions of Bohemian Rhapsody weren't as good as it would be in the later years, so I'm not that excited for it as I am for the Brighton Rock/Son and Daughter medley. I can't say anything about the video quality because my eyes are the worst you can imagine. |

Price of the deluxe edition down to $160 Canadian dollars on amazon.ca today. That's the first time its been less than 200 Canadian. Amazon.com down to $128 US and amazon.co.UK a quite ridiculous 173 pounds. Amazon Italy is 125 euros. makes Canada marginally the cheapest currently, but with shipping and import duties to wherever you are, YMMV. Anyhow, as I live in Canada I'm biting the bullet and paying that ridiculous amount. I've had it on order at 200cdn and figured I'd cancel if the price didn't drop. Instead it went up to 210. "When the cat's away, the mice will play", a good saying by The Real Wizard. Yup, gave it a listen. Sound's good overall and Brian's guitar doesn't seem to be as out of tune as it was on Rainbow '74. I don't like what they're doing with Roger's drum sound though. His snare and toms sound like they were triggered, which isn't a good thing considering it's a gig from 1970's. Unfortunately they did the same thing with Rainbow '74. I much prefer the natural sound of the drums. |
Enchlore 12.11.2015 13:48 |
The drum sound (and bass to a certain extent) seems very muffled compared to the guitars and vocals. Seven Seas of Rhye has been autotuned to death as I expected - Freddie evolves into a robot during the song. I gave it for a friend to listen and she promptly said "that mix sounds like shit". I like how the guitar and piano sounds, though. The medley was a good listen (especially Freddie's piano runs throughtout March of the Black Queen). Brighton Rock sounds empty with the muffled drums. The solo in White Queen, with the enhanced guitar and piano, is great. |
MercurialFreddie 12.11.2015 16:35 |
Something strange happens just before the chorus in Brighton Rock, it sounds like a very short and mild pause/cut. It's strange that they've taken the power from Roger's drum sound. Why didn't they left them sounding as "punchy" as on the Rainbow release or even the recent BBC broadcast of Hammy. Seven Seas Of Rhye is very autotuned... it sounds as Freddie recharged his vocal batteries and maybe they made it with premeditation... cause performance wise it beats Rainbow (March show).... Overall it's a good live release but so few extras, why not give another full show from the same year and pack it as a deluxe 2 CD edition ? |
Oscar J 12.11.2015 16:56 |
Yeah, the mix isn't all that great, but it was still a fab listen. Freddie sounds a bit sick but the rest of the guys are really on fire. Had forgotten just how good this gig was. |

Why the f*** does everybody have it already? If you do so, can you at least make a review and compare it to the previous versions ? At least the audio ? EDIT, Oh, now I understand the feline comments. |

LOL, two monsters of design work... Art Direction and Design: Matt Read & Greg Brooks As I remember, about 10 years ago there was info that Richard Gray already created the artwork for release of this show which was shelved at the time. Where is this artwork now? |
Nitroboy 13.11.2015 02:41 |
I'd focus the blame on the "design agency" that is responsible for the horrendous cover: link With a terrible website like that, it doesn't surprise me that they were responsible for the cover artwork. |

I came to the future to say this release sounds great, in my opinion. The Xmas version of Liar is superb. Like Rainbow, Budapest and Montreal before, it'll eat the poor sound of Wembley and MK Bowl. |

Amazon.es is selling the box for 102 € |
cmi 13.11.2015 08:11 |
Overall sound is great. Not squeezed dynamics. But they used a lot of delay on vocals. It's not a stadium, it is hall. |
Nitroboy 13.11.2015 09:49 |
I didn't notice any autotune in 'Seven Seas of Rhye'. I did however notice that they patched the vocals in the 1st chorus, but for some odd reason didn't patch the 2nd chorus... |

Sound fantastic. |
Oscar J 14.11.2015 06:39 |
I agree Seven Seas doesn't sound autotuned - though it sounds like the high notes were spliced in from a much stronger (studio or live) performance, because they sound too strong to be from Hammy. |

Freddie did some of that higher phrasing on SSOR from Rainbow '74 as well. Is it know if they were genuine notes from that performance? |

link Freddie's voice cracked in the first "bring before me what is mine - the seven seas of Rhye" and in the "forever" line. Also let me add that this bootleg's drum sound is much better. |

The ending of Liar ("Liar liar they never let you win") is also nicely fixed. |

artist_nine wrote: The ending of Liar ("Liar liar they never let you win") is also nicely fixed. Yup. They had fixed that one already for the BBC version. Also, on the old version Freddie was shown from the front when he made that fuck up, on the BBC version he was shown from behind in order to hide the fact that the video content wouldn't fit with the overdubbed audio. |

After some more comparing with the bootleg, I have come to the conclusion that they have indeed used some melodyne on Freddie in SSOR - they have used the vocals from the original recording, and just raised the sour notes slightly, and fixed a few cracks. The good thing is that they have done this pitch correction in a much more sophisticated way than in the Rainbow release. If a non-hardcore fan listened to this version of SSOR they probably would have been able to tell it had been fixed, as it still sounds rather natural and his vibrato has been left intact. The good thing about Melodyne and similar software is that you can raise the mean pitch of a note without taking away the slight pitch drift and vibrato that make it sound human. I'm actually glad they fixed the notes in SSOR - they sound painful in the bootleg. |

Biggus Dickus wrote:I'd like to think so. Freddies tone, timbre and the characteristics of the microphone during the high notes match the rest of the performance. Going by the official live releases from the last two tours, he did lower notes. To be honest I don't think Freddie sounds that bad on the original Hammersmith 1975. |
Enchlore 15.11.2015 10:46 |
Other than the "bring before me.." crack (which I listened to again recently and I think the current release used an overdub from Rainbow '74) and the last "forever" he indeed doesn't sound that bad. |

Think i'll give it a miss, it's a very average show and Freddie's vocals are quite shite for that show, and the price and content for the box set is hilarious they should of called it "Box of Bric-a-Brac" I always compare any Queen box set content & price to the Freddie solo box set which i thought was amazing compared to any Queen box set. As far as the price £49.99 is a fair price, i have lost count at how many older fans online with families have all said they cant afford any Queen box set. I hope Brian reads these posts about the overpriced box of junk. |

Placed my order with amazon for the bluray/CD. Up until last night it was telling me that delivery would be today, the 20th. Gets up this morning to see that's been amended to the 28th! Has anyone else had this? Needless to say I cancelled the order. |

Got My DVD via Amazon yesterday... Overall I'm not as excited as I was about Rainbow, but I like it, just seen it too many times already, John was maybe slight too low in the mix in places. Now Please please can we have some later NOTW /Jazz era stuff..................? |
