One thing i was wondering about Freddie is, what microphone did he use?
Live it was an Shure 565SD unisphere, but... WHY?
And what did he use in the studio? The Shure sounds great on bootlegs, good amount of low end, very crisp highs so i've come to think... did he use it in the studio as well? Or did he went for something like an AKG C414 in the studio?
Would love to know this. thanks in advantage!
Depending on the era:
Self-Produced Demos: No idea, but there's a photo of those sessions which could give you a hint.
The Seventies in General: Chiefly, but not necessarily exclusively, Neumann U-87.
In the Mack era, Neumann U87 and AKG 414.
David Richards era: I'm sure there's an article somewhere where the late great Dave speaks about the band's equipment in 'The Miracle' album, but I haven't got it here. Anyone?

Ahh thanks, So in the studio he went for expensive condenser mics, would've been weird if he'd sang into a dynamic mic in the studio though (I do that.. although i don't make money of off it and i'm not a pro singer)
Now that i'm thinking about it... Could it be that he perhaps sang into an SM58 or 57 during the late 80's early 90's ? Bono springs to mind doing that in the 80's...

Try to get hold of that David Richards SOS article from '89, I'm sure he speaks about that there.
I've been trying to obtain that article for years. I think I even asked SOS directly for it years ago. It seems no-one has it? I also sent Mr Richards an e-mail asking about the article not knowing about his cancer. Unfortunately it was too late and he didn't have the chance to respond. I sure would like to find that article somehow...
Ah, nice! So in the studio he sometimes would use it as well! Cool.
I was searching for a new vocal mic for myself. And i could buy the SM58, but this one is nicer looking, has been used by Freddie Mercury ánd has kinda the same vocal characteristics as the SM58 :) So i'll grab this one!

If my informations are correct, it must be from August 89'.

Yeah, that's unfortunate. What about the 'Mother Love' microphone? I think there's some article somewhere that mentions it. Presumably, Fred would've used a similar one for other sessions in that era.

If I remember correctly, the Mother Love microphone would be an SM85. I'm very curious as to how it sounds on various applications, so I may pick one up via eBay at some point.
