Hello forum! I wanna know about the "officiality" of that album, released in 1989. I have the 1st edition LP. and i see in the back cover the mark "Band Of Joy". Is it a subsidiary of EMI? It is another company authorised by Queen to release this BBC songs? And also another question: why Queen release these songs and not all of the BBC ones that releases later in the 2011 re-editions (like Nevermore or Jesus)? Thanks. |
The King Of Rhye 20.01.2015 11:15 |
It's as official as it gets! The US version that came out in '95 (exactly the same material, but different cover art and titled Queen At The BBC) was put out by Hollywood Records (I dont know what exactly "Band of Joy" is) Just my guess, but I always thought maybe they used sessions 1 and 3 but not 2 so there wouldn't be any repeated songs..... They really should put out a "Complete BBC Sessions" set at some point.....session 5's kinda not that interesting, but 4 and 6 have some awesome stuff still not officially released...... (btw Jesus was a demo, not a BBC session song) |
Viper 20.01.2015 11:30 |
I have the HR version on cd. A long time ago I saw the UK version on a street sell but I didn't buy it... Shame on me! Maybe I'll buy it some day on ebay... It's too expensive! A box with all the sessions is needed! |
musicland munich 20.01.2015 11:48 |
It's an official Queen album. Even there was almost no promption for that album. |
mooghead 20.01.2015 12:06 |
looks great in a frame on the wall, even better than Queen II IMHO |
alberbal12 20.01.2015 12:31 |
Thanks to all, the mistery i had is almost solved. Only rests the "Band Of Joy" brand... |
Claudio_CQI 20.01.2015 12:40 |
BAND OF JOY was a records label based in UK between 1978 and 1998. I don't know why, but I remember to have read somewhere it was a subsidiary of SONY. Since there are no informations about it I may be easily wrong of course. The QUEEN AT THE BEEB release was subject to agreement between BBC and EMI. |
The King Of Rhye 20.01.2015 12:54 |
I thought I read somewhere that the shot used for the cover of the US version actually a rejected cover shot for the first album.... |

My sister, who lived in England at the 90's, gave me as present Queen at the bbc in cd ¿?....strange being in uk, middle 90's, the usa edition. I always loved so much that record, than I even preffer the versions of the songs in the record than in the Queen first album or Ogre Battle from Queen II. To have all the bbc sessions, there is a bootleg in vinyl, double vinyl, very good, and at a razonable prize. |

And, hidden somewhere amongst John Stuart's 'History' pages...... link ....is a comment from him where Greg Brook's stated, at a convention, that the remaining 15 tracks would be released as part of a box set in either 2002 or 2004. tick....tick....tick..... |
The King Of Rhye 20.01.2015 13:23 |
link There was also this (I remember seeing it in a store somewhere years ago!)....... Released in 1996, saying the tracks were 'taken from the forthcoming album Queen At The BBC'! Guess its still forthcoming, maybe......lol |

The direct link to the 'full BBC release in 2002' from John Stuart, (quoting Greg Brooks) (scroll down to his Nov 4, 2005 12:07pm post) link btw, been using this 'bible', along with queenvault.com and the good folks who post the rarities on youtube to construct my own 'anthology'. I thank you all. |
alberbal12 20.01.2015 16:25 |
And why this box was unreleased? We are in 2015 and this announce was for 2002... I prefer this to another concert, seriously. And if they don't want, don't release a box, but you can release a vinyl or a CD, i'm sure people will be satisfied. Seriously, if the Queen Archivist is reading this, please keep in mind releasing it! |

Alberbal 12 is this bootleg. link You can have it also in cd bootlegs, there are a lot. This looks pretty presentation. link There is also bootlegs with the first concert of Queen that BBC broadcast in Liverpool, 1973 |

At the time of Made In Heaven, it was the plan to release the full set of BBC sessions over the coming two or three years, in 1996, 7 and possibly 8. Instead that didn't happen, and some of the already released tracks found themselves on the CD singles from Made In Heaven. It's a bit of a shame that it never worked out, but perhaps now with a new record company..... nah, it probably won't happen..... |

miraclesteinway wrote: It's a bit of a shame that it never worked out, but perhaps now with a new record company..... nah, it probably won't happen.....No loss, really. Most of the best BBC tracks ended up as bonus tracks on the 2011 remasters, and we have excellent quality copies of all the rest. About 15 years ago most of us hadn't heard the 4-3-74 versions of White Queen and Nevermore. You can only imagine how revelatory it was to hear drums and guitar on the latter for the first time. |
Viper 21.01.2015 11:43 |
True. Still I want an official release! :P |
The King Of Rhye 21.01.2015 13:06 |
They should have at least put the BBC versions of White Queen and We Will Rock You on the 2011 remasters! Uh........maybe not White Queen as much, cus its pretty much the same thing as the excellent live version they already had, but I would definitely trade the live version of WWRY (fast) for the BBC one! |
The Real Wizard 21.01.2015 14:39 |
The King Of Rhye wrote: I would definitely trade the live version of WWRY (fast) for the BBC one!The BBC version had been officially released and was available here for years, whereas the live version was only previously heard on bad sounding audience tapes. The King Of Rhye 21.01.2015 14:57 |
^^^ Ah, I suppose that's true............it was never released officially in the US that I'm aware of, tho........ Anyway, I'm not too upset, I've had it for a while......:D |

I bought Queen At The Beeb on CD brand new in a record shop in Cambridge when it first came out in 1989. It appears to have been Band Of Joy's first CD or at least the start of their own catalogue sequence, since it is BOJCD001. For many years At The Beeb has been my favourite Queen album, I like it more than any of the studio albums. The only thing that could compete for me is Session 6 with We Will Rock You, another awesome session. Such a shame the other sessions have no complete official release. And such a shame the howling guitar feedback intro to Ogre Battle was lost (not used, damaged, uninteresting, whatever) since the Pittrek restored version proves it was fantastic. |

Live Killers and Live At The Bowl have WWRY (Fast), as do the "We Will Rock You" / "Rock Montreal" DVDs. Or am I confused what we're talking about? |

For me, the bonus EP was very poorly executed, first, to be named EP, only 5 or 6 or SEVEN?? And leave out many rarities , especially some of the BBC tracks. |

There was room on the bonus disc(s) for the BBC versions and other material (but that's beating a dead horse) as well. I did find the thread for the pittrek 'remasters', but the link is gone. My versions are pre-pittrek. Anyone care to guide me to the good/better/best versions that are not the 'official' versions? The request would also include the slow WWRY. mp3 is fine with me. Thanks in advance. |
alberbal12 25.01.2015 08:47 |
I don't know all that versions. Maybe anybody can post here the "not official" ones. |

And queenvault says that the beeb and at the bbc are little different! Example for one track, the others are the same Keep Yourself Alive (BBC Session 1) 3:48 Written by Brian May Appears on: At The Beeb Recorded February 5, 1973 at Langham 1 Studio in London, this recording of Keep Yourself Alive was done for Queen's very first BBC session. This take is very similar to the album version, possibly featuring some recorded elements from their Trident Studios sessions. Lyrics, vocals, and instruments are very similar. Lead and backing vocals are slightly different, but not a major departure from the definitive version. Fade-out is similar to the album version. Keep Yourself Alive (BBC Session 1 - 1995 Stereo Swap) 3:48 Written by Brian May Appears on: At The BBC To capitalize on the success of The Beatles Live At The BBC, Hollywood Records released "At The BBC". Previously available in the UK as "At The Beeb", this release features recordings from Queen's first and third sessions at Lanham 1 Studio in London. For this CD the left and right stereo channels have been swapped. |

I loved hearing those sessions for the first time. Then as fate would have it, my (now long gone) tribute band, "Sheer Heart Attack - A Royal Tribute to Queen," as well as my and my future wife's names, were all listed in the liner notes to At The BBC. At the time, she was helping to promote our band, as well as Queen, and Brian May's first solo album, and struck up a good relationship with a Hollywood Records employee, and he surprised us with that listing. It was to thank us for helping to promote Queen in the US, which was very much needed at that time. Sadly, that employee left soon after that, and was replaced with the usual record company guy who didn't seem to much like his job at all, or Queen, for that matter. It was sad to see Queen get treated like that by their US record label. |
dysan 26.01.2015 02:37 |
I have great memories of getting the 1989 release on tape. At that point in my life it was like hearing something really really rare and forbidden. Those were good days. The Hollywood CD was nice, but it seemed a shame that it wasn't expanded. Likewise, I feel the 2011 bonus EPs would've benefitted from complete sessions rather than one or two songs. Especially looking back now nearly 4 years later and we've had no BBC collection. |
Ron 28.01.2015 14:28 |
Hmm so nobody has mentioned yet that the US 1995 release swapped the stereo channels when compared to the 1989 BOJ release? I still don't know why though. Maybe the 89 release was wrong? |
The King Of Rhye 28.01.2015 16:04 |
I always assumed it was just a weird mistake by someone somewhere along the line......the same thing happened to Soul Brother when it was released on the US Heaven For Everyone CD single! |
alberbal12 28.01.2015 16:22 |
This afternoon i put an email to Brian May's soapbox, about the BBC Sessions and the 1995 "Let Me Live" single, that says it will come an album titled "Queen At The BBC". When he answer (if he answer) i put the response here. We want some real info of that! |
dysan 29.01.2015 07:14 |
I assume the US Beeb album is correct as the stereo panning on the album backing tracks is the same as the respective releases. It took me a few goes to work this out. The ole noggin ain't what it was. |
alberbal12 29.01.2015 08:24 |
How you can say this? I haven't got that US version and i cannot see it... Thanks for the research! |
