Just watched the set online - same lineup as the gigs last year. (Brian, Roger, Adam, Rufus, Spike Edney, that bass player) Anyone else see it? To me, it was a bit cringe worthy especially when Fun (who are these guys exactly? never heard of them before) sang Somebody To Love, Adam Lambert does a much better job in my opinion. Set list (not sure if it was edited at all? I don't think so) 1. Bohemian Rhapsody - first verse + guitar solo 2. Another One Bites The Dust 3. Crazy Little Thing Called Love 4. Who Wants To Live Forever Adam leaves stage, Fun enters 5. Somebody To Love w/ Fun Adam returns 6. Fat Bottomed Girls (Adam + Fun lead singer duet) Fun leaves stage 7. Dragon Attack 8. Bohemian Rhapsody - rock part 9. We Will Rock You 10. We Are The Champions Surprised they didn't do Under Pressure - either as a duet with Adam Lambert + Fun guy, or Adam + Roger... |

GonnaUseMyPrisoners - glad you enjoyed it. Just some of the high notes by Fun especially in Somebody To Love made me cringe. I am very happy to see Brian and Roger perform, I just prefer Adam cos I think he does Freddie voice justice, he obviously looked up to him. |

I'm 50. I saw Queen live in 1980 and 1982 and they were life-changing. And in 2006 - in Chicago, whereaftter Brian posted a comment about that show being like the old days. CUZ IT WAS. Fuck your attitude, ya cunt. You don't know squat cuz it's obvious you didn't LISTEN to tonight's show at all. Adam was perfect. But go on, please, continue to post hateful things about ALL of this band's current activities. Why not just go join Feist's fanclub or something... Yawn. |

I did listen and I thought it was awful. The Adam moments, the Fun. moments even worse. I'm a real Queen fan and I love the fact Brian and Roger still want to play, but I think they have had enough. The concert was no good and for moments I was ashamed for the band I love and respect so much. P.S.: By the way, I like Feist ;) |

thanks for sharing the visuals, too. ! i agree that mr. lambert did his task very well. at some points he lacks with the timing... but hey, that's life... or live... too bad they only played some common songs. i would have loved to hear them doing some odd songs like "the miracle" or something... but it's the "queen machine".... kind of liked the outdo of "somebody to love"!! ...anyway: nice to see that they're back on stage. even if it is for one off performance which doesn't hold any big surprises. |

Your more detailed and more valid criticism was not posted for me to see last night, so we crossed paths. I jumped all over your condescencion because I was prepared for it by my past interactions on this forum. If I was wrong, so be it. Look, no one can deny there were tiny imperfections here and there (more on those later), but you lose sight of the experience when you sit there and count them up like they're parking violations. Indeed, in doing so, all you're truly doing is (wittingly or unwittingly) trying to make a case for why Queen should tuck it away and seal the box, because (let's all chant it together now) "no one can replace Freddie". Pointing out every tiny imperfection is like subliminally repeating that phrase over and over and over, and trust me, it need not be done! NO ONE ANYWHERE will EVER dispute "no one can replace Freddie". So honestly, can we stop "saying it" both verbally and by implication, i.e. always focusing the negative with every new thing Queen does? For once, I'd like to come back to this forum and see some appreciation being expressed to the band we supposedly all adore, but it's so trifling, on the whole. Pepsi commercials aside e.g., Brian & Rog have done a great deal of things since Freddie's passing that deserve high praise. Last night, the elder fellas delivered an amazingly energetic set (particularly for gentlemen of that age) complete with lesser performed songs, new nuances, interpretations and improvizations, precision playing, and a lively stage presence, which added up to a thoroughly enjoyable (and FREE via the internet) performance, IMO. The singers bravely sang high notes that Freddie would seldom have attempted live, and perhaps in their excitement (and let's face it, with a fraction of the rehearsal time Freddie would have had) turn they slipped in very minor ways, here and there. So what? In general, their voices showed they were capable of what was in their imaginations, and I loved what they did with the songs. The love they brought to the songs and that they both put their own stamps on the melodies, most times brilliantly, says a lot - they're the real deals from a younger generation. They weren't/aren't BETTER, they are quite literally "differently abled" and made the most of their talents in that way. That's why I was thrilled at what I heard and saw. Life is to goddamned short to always be picking at the negatives in great shows... leave that for the day when you're rehearsing for a band. Good luck. |

As on the shows last year, Brian did play really well. He is defiantly a better player when he is the only guitarist on stage. He is playing much better than he did during the Q+PR tours. |

Fun were the weak link in this show. Their keyboard player fluffed Somebody To Love, the guitarist and Bass player were nondescript and their singer shouted the end of so many lines |

Does Brian May have a perv on for boy singers and boy bands? Who is Fun? Flash of the day? What a godawful singer. May was in top form but he continues to undermine his own credibility as one of rock's elder statesmen by continuing to work with insipid pop singers. |

Good to see them having fun. I think it was a solid job. I really like some of Brians variations. The whole gig reminds me of a "medley"...well I have mixed feelings about that. And Adam Lambert ??? He should start smoking, doing some shots of vodka and sleep less than six hours a night...if he follows my advice, his voice will be fantastic in a couple of years.Trust me ! I had some drops( Audio) during the stream ? Was it my previlege problem ? |

Inasmuch as the shorter set seems to have added a bit of focus on the material and made less room for AL dicking around, this was a bit more enjoyable to watch than the Ukraine thing. ... With the exception of the open-mic bit where they let that random guy on the stage to sing Somebody to Love. I feel like every time this happens, they find someone shittier to guest on lead vocals. This isn't hyperbole - I don't think I've ever heard something so shonky in a professional setting since Axl Rose sang WWRY. Awful in every way. I really have to wonder what drives these selections. Maybe Brian doesn't know how to say no anymore? Bless him, but seriously. Brian and Roger were fab though, and AL seems to have tightened up some of the screws. I still think it's a stylistic mismatch, but that's down to me not really being able to picture the remnants of my favourite band gigging in some banal place where Katy Perry also happens to be performing. Honestly though, I did think it to be a better performance than the ones I saw from last year. |

I thought it was fine. Like someone pointed above, the gig did feel like a medley, which was a bit disappointing, but unfortunately that's what happens on such occasions. It sucks they only gave them 30 minutes. But anyway, CLTCL went down a storm, WWTLF was quite amazing and the rest was pretty good as well. Including STL, but I do agree they shouldn't have let a random singer on stage. I'm sure Adam would have done a fine job with it, so why? They are clearly trying to appeal to the younger audience, but seriously Brian needs to stop it now. Bo Rhap was disappointing, you just shouldn't cut such a track like this. It would have been a lot better if Adam did the first two verses (like Freddie did on Live Aid) and skipped the heavy bit altogether. Overall, I think AL handled the show well and sang well on most songs, although there were some weaker moments too (e.g. the beginning of AOBTD, parts of DA, WWRY and WATC). The band played well, it feels kinda nice to see Rufus there. He looks totally like his dad in the early days of Queen. Would I want them to play some more gigs? Certainly. Would I want the collaboration to develop anywhere further than concerts? Don't think so, unless they feel like they've produced something really excellent (i.e. way above "The Cosmos Rocks" standard), then they have my permission to publish it ;-) Otherwise, focus on the unknown Freddie tracks, please. That's where the magic is. Anyway, a very nice tribute and a fun performance at the same time. |

Just want to share my view of the whole thing here. I have to say, i didn't enjoy 2012 shows at all - it was bloody awful. You all know - Adam's screaming, crying, all that crap, i would call it over-singing. Plus his ridiculous stage presence and total absence of rock singing. Things were getting worse with a help of Brian and Roger's countless mistakes all the way through the shows. Roger's playing was very week, so he was backed up by Rufus for some parts. This time i didn't expect things to be much better, but i watched the whole thing, an i made my conclusions. 1) Set list was very strange, i would say ridiculous. Opening with medley of slow BR+AOBTD+CLTCL ?? Whose brilliant idea it was? No power, no energy, no vibe. You have to remember - Queen were always great in making effective show openings, but this time they just walked on stage like an amateur band and started playing slow songs? Just like "lot of noise+Seaven Seas Of Rhye+Keep Yourself Alive" opening wasn't bad enough? What's next? Starting the show with Misfire or Save me? Dragon Attack in the end of the set, transferring into BR halfway through the song? What the hell is that? It's not even Greatest Hits setlist, which everyone is tired to hear, it's "Chaotic mess-let's play something-let's cut into the next song-let's play something different now" setlist. 2) Roger's playing was awful. I've never heard my drumming idol playing so bad, it's his worst performance by far. Rufus backed him on almost each track, while Roger did mistake after mistake. To make things even worse - he was hitting very week and sloppy. Brian was miles away from his best, too. 3) The whole Somebody To Love crap with Fun... i have no words, what was the reason for this circus on stage? Open mic? Maybe they can let me sing? It's not the level of the world-class band. Do they really have to be a karaoke band? 4)A little good note - Adam was better than last year. Still a lot of pretty bad things, but really better this time. Now he has some power at least, and sings more like a man. To sum the things up - Brian and Roger are now again in that 2000-2004 kind of situation. One-off gigs, shitty singers, very poor and unrehearsed playing, what an embarrassment for such a band. They are good when they are on tour, like 2005 and 2008, but these one-offs are incredible shit. They should do it fully, or just quit performing. And i don't even want to start all this Lambert thing again - if they gonna do a tour, certainly not with him. |
Vocal harmony 22.09.2013 18:45 |
Drumster, what are you talking about. They just walked on stage like an amateur band and started playing a slow song. What do you mean like they did at Live Aid? Sorry I forgot for a minute that was a crap show too!!!! Apart from Dragon Atack what they played on Friday was a greatest hits set. Yes it was medley, what were you expecting in half an hour. As far as big intros and making an enterance it was a 30min set at a multi act gig, they didn't have their own lights or PA. They just turned up and got on with it. |
Donna13 23.09.2013 23:35 |
Wow! Just watched the entire show and though brief (at approx. 30 minutes) it was really exciting and powerful. Adam has improved; I would assume, just from having more rehearsal time with them and possibly from studying Queen concerts (Freddie). I thought they all sounded really good. I'm so glad it went well. Brian didn't seem to have any problems with that new knee. I liked Adam's toned down stage presence (just concentrating on, and feeling, the music, instead of trying to be "flamboyant" with costumes or awkward and distracting posturing). I think a basic enthusiastic presence is really all that is needed when the music deserves all the focus ... and I liked his retro (50's) rock hair. They all looked and sounded great. The Fun segment was OK. I think his (the Fun singer's) mic was too low in the mix, so he was shouting instead of being able to show off a voice. Oh, well. Great overall. |

Roger and Brian were both fine, as they usually are. Rufus isn't backing up Roger because Roger needs him, he's backing him up because Roger wants his son to be a successful musician. He's totally unnecessary though. Adam was OK, his voice is fine, but he isn't a good frontman. Everything he does looks calculated, whereas a great frontman just communicates naturally. He was a major improvement from the Kiev gig though, who knows, maybe one day he'll knock it out of the park.To be perfectly honest though, after watching the Fun guy shout his way through Somebody to Love I was begging for Adam Lambert to come back. |

Nate Ruess (lead singer of Fun.) actually has a good voice. Some people have compared him to Freddie vocally, and I can see the comparison ( KIND OF) in some of Freddie's earlier vocal work. When I heard Nate would be singing with Queen, I was looking forward to it. However, Somebody to Love was NOT the song for Nate to sing. I think it sounded awful, and I was disappointed. Now, I automatically crossed my arms and pouted through all of Adam's vocals by default because I'm clearly obsessed w Freddie and obviously I refuse to see past that. That aside, he did an ok job, although I hated the vocal improvs, it made the songs sound more like pop than rock. I was however moved to little girl tears during WWTLF. |
