Especially when it was played live, it was awesome, I think anyway. But its such a little known Queen song and people who do know it dont seem to like it. Definitely one of the best offerings from HS in my opinion, and it's one of my favourite Queen songs. Anyone else appreciate it? |
lyricalassasin77 18.03.2013 12:47 |
I myself appreciate the Hot Space album....don't understand why so many trash it. True it was a shock to the system to most diehard fans that were used to the band having a heavier sound but if you don't evolve with the times then you become irrelevant.....and I think Hot Space for its time was a good way of being up to date with what was going on at the time. Action This Day has a very infectous beat. I find myself each time I listen to it tapping my foot and getting really into the beat |
Nitroboy 18.03.2013 13:52 |
It's pretty mediocre on the album, but live, it's like a totally different song! :D |

I like it. One of the 4 best on that album! Cack chat, Calling all girls and Under pressure are quite good too |
bobbyo 18.03.2013 16:03 |
I like it too. Cack Chat? Is that a freudian slip? |
Saint Jiub 18.03.2013 17:14 |
It is my favorite on Hot Space and in my top twenty of all Queen songs. I find it motivating for me when in the face of adversity |

I LOVE "Action This Day"! Lol! Are you KIDDING?! I think it should be on a "best of" one day as a matter of fact. And yes I do love all of "Hot Space" as well. |
LouLou 18.03.2013 21:22 |
I think it's a great song. If Queen would have recorded it on their usual 'Queen' way and releases it as a single it could have been a nr1 hit. The live version is awesome!!! |
GuitarMay 19.03.2013 00:57 |
I like this song too ! For me, one of best songs of Hot Space album and live it's better ! |
TheWorks84 19.03.2013 01:53 |
I prefer Staying Power, not a huge fan of Hot Space though. |
Martin Packer 19.03.2013 02:56 |
I *like* Action This Day (and Calling All Girls) and consider them among the better songs on the album. |
Heavenite 19.03.2013 03:04 |
Not a huge favourite, although it has been a bit of a grower over the years. The live version on the last box set was way better in my opinion. |
Hangman_96 19.03.2013 04:19 |
That's a great song. Who ever said it was bad? |
Rick 19.03.2013 04:34 |
A great song, but I can't stand the vocals from Roger and Brian (?) on the album version. Freddie certainly delivers (as always). Love the duet between Roger and Freddie live. Especially the Tokorozawa version. |
tomchristie22 19.03.2013 05:47 |
Good song. Not one of their most musically complex. I agree with Rick, live was a great improvement. Roger singing the melody for his verse parts is much nicer than the weird dissonant sounding falsetto thing they have going on in the studio version. The real drums and slightly faster tempo are good too, and the synth is actually pleasing to listen to in the live versions, makes a nice contrast with the typical guitar sound. |
Sebastian 19.03.2013 06:30 |
I like the song a lot. It's quite good, but then again, Queen had 20-30 songs which are even better. |
ili 19.03.2013 08:43 |
Yes, I too agree. Actually I think with 2 omissions Hot Space would be a much better album. The songs that I really don't like on the album at all are Dancer and Cool Cat. other than those 2, I love all of them. Staying Power works pretty well on stage. My favourite track on the album is Las Palabras De Amor. |
ili 19.03.2013 08:45 |
forgot to mention Body Language... make the omissions 3 please. |

It's a great song live. I don't think that las palabras de amor gets enough praise- does anyone else appreciate this song as much as I do? |
DLCVinnuendo 19.03.2013 12:49 |
it's a great live track, but in studio is horrible... |

I too love 'Las Palabras de Amor' ! My daughter learned how to play it on the guitar - we just love it. Beautiful song. I have to 'censor' Body Language, though, from my 10 year old when we play the Hot Space album.... I skip over that one! Action This Day and Put out the Fire are the two semi-rocking songs on the album and I like them a lot. |
Chief Mouse 19.03.2013 15:52 |
Body Language isn't anything too special. I listen to it only for the sake of Freddie's awesome high vocals in chorus. |
mooghead 19.03.2013 16:46 |
"The songs that I really don't like on the album at all are Dancer and Cool Cat." Dancer is a lost gem.. lost to the Hot Space album... with proper instruments and not horrible sounding synths is could have been mega... Cool Cat isnt worthy of mention, have maybe only listened to it all the way through twice in my life.... and I am old... :/ |
Wiley 19.03.2013 17:19 |
To me, Queen went well over board with this. They didn't dip the tip of their toe to test the waters but they jumped right in. Just look at the first 4-5 tracks of Hot Space. They don't want you to like Hot Space "despite" the funk tracks but because of it, so when I hear people saying the album would be better without the funk tracks I think they are missing the point. It wouldn't be Hot Space. I do agree that Dancer is a lost gem and, to me, it's a good example of how the rest of the album could have sounded. Ok ok, the synths are sub-par but at least it's got heavy guitars in it. Musically, it's the perfect blend of rock and funk. Michael Jackson did it way better, of course, and Hot Space is no Thriller, but it's a good effort from a very diverse band. That's part of the reason why I like Queen so much. |
Holly2003 19.03.2013 17:37 |
Dancer is just a mess. For me, the only song in the "funk/black category" (to quote Fred) that really works is Back Chat. Brian really nails the solo. Staying Power is like a parody of that genre of song; Body Language is sleazy and awful; Action This Day and Calling All Girls are instantly forgetable; Cool Cat is a blank space where a song might be -- completely emotionless; Put out the Fire is uninspiring, and sounds terrible. How did he get the Red Special to sound so harsh?; in contrast, Las Palabras de Amor and Under Pressure are fine songs. Overall, a poor album for Queen, with weak, banal songwriting, crappy synths and messy arrangements. Hard to believe this is the same band who made The Game about a year earlier. |
AlexRocks 20.03.2013 10:20 |
Yeah, I've had to hide the "Body Language" song for people as well whence listening to the U.S. 1992 Hollywood Records version of "Greatest Hits". Lol. It's like audio porn! Lol. |
Wiley 20.03.2013 11:29 |
I used to hate Body Language but then I met a guy (who then became my friend) and the first thing he told me upon knowing I was a Queen fan was that he LOVED Body Language. I though he was crazy but I guess unconsciously I became a bit more receptive and started to like it for what it is, a naughty little song with a catchy bass line. Then I heard a live version from the Hot Space tour and it made me like it even more. It's not classic Queen material nor is comparable with what they did even a acouple of years before (or after, for that matter) but you can still enjoy it. I know I do. You can also hate it, though :) haha |
waunakonor 20.03.2013 12:46 |
I've tried to like Body Language, but it just doesn't work for me. Maybe I can find someone to convince me it's all right, but until then I'll just cringe everytime I hear it until I quickly change to the next track. I often forget BL is even on Hot Space because I always go out of my way to avoid it. The next track is very nice number. Definitely better live (which I'm incidentally listening to right now), but I like Roger's vocals on the studio as well. I'm starting to figure that people have a problem with Roger's slightly creepy falsettos, which surprises me because I've always liked that sound. Dancer is awesome. Still have no idea how it got voted second worst on the album. I wish Queen had kept more songs than just Under Pressure around in their live setlists. Action, Staying and Life all sounded real good and deserved to be featured on more than just the Hot Space tour. At least Staying was featured some on The Works tour, but that was about it. |
mooghead 21.03.2013 16:24 |
Theres always someone who says they like Body Language, but they don't and just want to draw attention to themselves... "For me, the only song in the "funk/black category" (to quote Fred) that really works is Back Chat. Brian really nails the solo" Perfect... its a decent song but what makes it really great is Brian being Brian and playing a Brianesque guitar solo. Without it it would just be another Hot Space plod. It sounds a bit like Queen for a few seconds in the middle. Just imagine... if it wasn't for Under Pressure.... Queen might just have never resurfaced... |
john bodega 22.03.2013 00:42 |
Crap song. Unlike Staying Power, I don't even think a killer live performance can save it. |
TheWorks84 22.03.2013 01:02 |
The only 2 songs that i can stand from the Funk category is Staying Power and Back Chat. |
tomchristie22 22.03.2013 05:14 |
Sure, when compared with their work at their prime, Hot Space is awful. I still forgive and enjoy the better songs off it for what they are. Only ones I really don't care for are Cool Cat and Body Language, but even the latter I can enjoy in live renditions, where the heavy drums, guitar work and vocal harmonies make it sound more in the vein of Get Down, Make Love, which I quite like. |
matt z 22.03.2013 07:26 |
Love the song. Roger was definitely listening to a lot of that new wave stuff. ... sparse instrumentation and "off" harmony vocals on his own part made it interesting. It's music from a "different band" but not far from his stuff on fun in space. One of the best tracks on that album But then again. .. I LOVE "cool cat" so most of you still think me a fool |
