Did anyone go to any of the crazy tour concerts in '79? If so what were they like? I was reading that in one of the London venues they played at it was so small that there was only one spotlight above Roger's drums!
I went to all the London venues on that Tour, as well as the two Brighton Gigs.
The Venue you speak of was at the time known as the Tottenham Mayfair (now long demolished).
This was just a few miles from where I lived and I used to go there regularly in my youth.
Tickets were extremely limited (the audience only in the hundreds) and the bar was just a few feet from the stage.
I was literally standing right next to the stage and just a few feet away from the band - truly amazing.
So basically, Queen played in my local!
You can see just how small the venue is from this aerial photograph. ">link

Not only were the band on top form, the atmosphere in the city hall those nights were the most intense electrifying experience I have ever witnessed at a concert, it is difficult to put into words the feeling that night, I seem to remember Peter Freestone also saying the same.
yes, birmingham NEC. it was newly opened - think it was an "indoor Uk record attendance" at that time.
can't remember much - except that it was my first gig after leaving 6th form to start work a month ago. had been to smaller gigs - but nothing like this...and it started a 10 year period of my life when i saw every band i wanted to - and hardly a fortnight went by that we weren't off to some gig.
queen were good, in fact i think it was their best gig - of the five times i saw them. the "wait" before the gig was something i'd not expected...but ever since it seems a staple of live gigs that the band keeps the audience waiting
No, but i just watched the Hammersmith Odeon performance from that tour, and it was in my opinion one of Freddie's finest performances vocally.
You can certainly here the difference in his voice compared to their later shows.
