Listening to some Queen tracks the other day I thought it was interesting to pick out the songs that reflect Queen's influences. Those that I came up with were: Long Away - The Beatles Last Horizon (Not really Queen, I know!) - The Shadows Crazy Little Thing Called Love / Man On The Prowl - Elvis Presley (rockabilly in general?) Any others you'd like to add, I know Queen were influenced by Led Zepp and Hendrix but I'm not sure what I'd pick out that reflects those two. |

Innuendo - led zeppelin |
Stelios 26.02.2012 10:05 |
Another one bites the dust - bassline inspired from "Good Times" by the disco group Chic Sheer Heart Attack- Punk rock movement Life is Real - John Lennon (especially lyrics) Somebody to Love - Aretha Franklin possibly |
Holly2003 26.02.2012 10:47 |
Bluesbreaker -- Eric Clapton/Cream Good Company - Lonnie Donnegan Get Down, Make Love - Led Zeppelin Now I'm Here - Chuck Berry |
Biggzy10 26.02.2012 11:38 |
Father to Son - The Who Their early work sounds very similar to Led Zeppelin Lazy On A Sunday Afternoon/Seaside Rendezvous - The Beatles |

long Away is more like the Byrds than the beatles. Brian's use of a Burns 12 string has that familier jangle. |

"Long Away - The Beatles" No |

Holly2003 wrote: Get Down, Make Love - Led Zeppelin Now I'm Here - Chuck Berryi reckon Get Down, Make Love is much closer in true inspiration to the Beatles - Come Together would also be more inclined to put the inspiration for Now I'm Here somewhere between Mott and Bowie - maybe closest i can find would be Aladdin Sane album - esp when you consider the similarities in the theme of both |
Holly2003 26.02.2012 16:37 |
You're both probably right about Now I'm Here. Reason I mentioned Berry is the guitar solo which is atypical of Brian and features some "Johnny-B-Good" type chops. I've always thought the "sex" instrumental/vocal break in GDML was the band's homage to Zep's Whole Lotta Love. |

Modern Times Rock 'N Roll: Led Zep. Just listen to Comunication Breakdown. I hear Zeppelin influences in Son & Daughter also, mainly the guitar riff. Funny How Love Is: The Beach Boys, I guess? |
Ziggy_SD 26.02.2012 20:06 |
'Father to Son' has Led Zep all over it. In fact, I think the riff is taken straight from one of their tracks (can anyone pinpoint which one?). 'Another One Bites the Dust' - Chic's 'Good Times'. Lots of the stuff on Mr. Bad Guy seems to be inspired by a lot of Italian disco/Hi-NRG that was going on at the time. 'Pain Is So Close to Pleasure' sounds awfully a lot like Diana Ross' 'Chain Reaction'. |

Another interesting one: My Baby Does Me - 1989 (rhythm) - "NO ORDINARY LOVE" - 1992 - SADE (ODDLY ENOUGH THIS IS IN REVERSE... Her Song sounds like Queen's song) I think a similar thread was here on QZ: SEARCH: PLAGIARISM Boys of Summer = Breakthru and Keep Passing the Open Windows was another song |
Ziggy_SD 27.02.2012 18:52 |
More random thoughts: I thought the Sade connection was interesting as the intro to 'These Are The Days of Our Lives' sounds a lot like the intro on 'Smooth Operator'. The intro to 'It's a Hard Life' is ripped off an opera. 'Rain Must Fall' sounds like it was an outtake from Wham!'s 'Make It Big' album and 'My Baby Does Me' sounds very George Michael-esque. 'Scandal' sounds a lot like a Scorpions tune (don't know the title). Slightly OT, I always wondered what an AC/DC cover of 'Fat Bottomed Girls would sound like. |
FriedChicken 28.02.2012 04:28 |
That something sounds a bit like something doesn't mean it was influenced by something. The only think that links Last Horizon to The Shadows is that it's an instrumental song with lead guitar playing the melody. Like Joe Satriani does, and Steve Vai, Jeff Beck and many many more. |
Ozz 28.02.2012 08:44 |
This thread is surreal....
Maybe the opening question should have ask some citations to prove the influences.
Next time we will see that Somebody To Love sounds like Justin Bieber ¬¬
------
We probably should look artists like:
Beatles
Beach Boys (Funny How Love Is)
The Who
Led Zeppellin (Innuendo, Queen I)
Cream
Aretha Franklin (Somebody To Love)
Chic (AOBTD)
Elvis
Lennon
Mott The Hoople

I don't get it, why do you think each song they do has to be influenced by either another song or another artist just because they sound a little like the other? For example, songs like Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon and Seaside Rendezvous are most definitely NOT influenced by The Beatles, why would they? Those songs are influenced by the vaudeville era and that is exactly what Freddie is trying to do, bring you back there. Another One Bites the Dust doesn't have to be influenced by Chic just because the bass riff sound similar, it's just Deacon's take on black funky music in general. I think it's more of Queen trying their own versions of certain musical STYLES rather than bands. |
Ozz 28.02.2012 11:05 |
Nile rodgers said in an interview that John deacon used to hang with them in the studio and that AOBTD was clearly influenced by them |

But in the case of Life is Real for example Freddie said that he deriberately tried to recreate Lennos ubstract lyrics and concepts. ex. "Blood on my terraces Torsos in my closet Shadows from my past live is real" ps. and a little trivia some might dont know. The original opening line of the song used to be "cunt stains on my pillow" !!! LOL |

I think the title "Life Is Real" is an answer to Lennon's "Imagine". Off topic - there is a painting by an Indonesian artist where the image of John Lennon is upfront but faintly in the background is an image of Freddie Mercury. The title of the painting is "The Real of Imagine". It was sold at an auction to a private collector. |

tcc wrote: I think the title "Life Is Real" is an answer to Lennon's "Imagine". .no it isn't. "Life Is Real" is miles closer to the (at that time) unreleased Lennon track "Real Love" - if you ever get a chance to hear the solo demo, and NOT the Beatles 1995 version give it a go - i swear Freddie must've heard it |

No one has mentioned that Jesus sounds like Black Sabbath. I think lyrically it was Mercury's way of spoofing Sabbath, by doing a slow, heavy, psychedelic number about God instead of Satan. |

I believe Queen were strongly influenced by the first cavemen who banged rocks against the side of a cave and realized that they made pretty noises, thus music was born. |
