I'm trying to make a list of Beatles songs that were written or recorded during the Sgt. Pepper sessions (late 1966-1967), with the exception of the Sgt. Pepper album and the MMT album. Here's what I have so far: Across The Universe Annie Anything Carnival Of Light Christmas Time (Is Here Again) Cry Baby Cry Isn't It A Pity Only A Northern Song See Yourself You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) Any that I missed? I'm sure there are some solo songs written during this period that I missed, even Beatles songs that were written in 1967 and weren't recorded until 1968, like Cry Baby Cry and Across The Universe. |

Across The Universe – (I know John had some of the lyrics, just not sure of whether they were during the Pepper sessions).
Annie- (wasn't this from the 'Get Back' sessions?)
Anything
Carnival Of Light
Christmas Time
Cry Baby Cry-(I know this was late ’67…not sure whether it was during the MMT sessions).
Isn't It A Pity- (I think this was before Pepper).
Only A Northern Song
See Yourself- (I didn’t know this until your post. Thank you).
You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
>Any that I missed? There were a couple of incidentals for the MMT film (‘Shirley's Wild Accordian’ and ‘Jamie’s Dream’) . And the ’66 Fan Club release, ‘Pantomime: Everywhere It’s Christmas’ started and was released after work began on 'Strawberry Fields'. 'Step Inside Love' (for Cilla Black) did appear on 'Anthology'. I looked through my Mark Lewisohn bible before posting this. The following website should prove helpful for any solo and band background link And always remember that The Beatles released ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ as an EP, not an album. If you were already aware of this, my apologies. |

Now, onto the other songs, I remember reading somewhere (I think YouTube comments) that the Across the Universe piano demos John had made were recorded a week before the Pepper sessions. Annie was originally made for Ringo to sing back in '67, but then With A Little Help came along, and they only revisited it in 1969 for about 30 seconds. Cry Baby Cry is from late '67, probably October. Isn't It A Pity - I do remember reading (Wikipedia) that it was for Revolver, and John turned it down, but George kept on recording it throughout 1966 to 1970. All the instrumentals from the MMT film are actually just part of the original takes for "Flying." Here they are: Number one: link Number two: link Can't believe I also missed Step Inside Love and Everywhere It's Christmas! And about the EP & LP of MMT, there was a Magical Mystery Tour album released in Canada and the US back in 1967. However, this was not released in the UK until 1976 for some reason. The LP edition had all the singles from that era on the flip side (SFF, Penny Lane, Hello, Goodbye, BYARM, All You Need Is Love). However, I'm sure what you were really saying was that The Beatles only authorized the UK EP. If not, well here's some info! Thanks a lot for the information! |

Well, I learned some things from you as well, so thanks. I happened to have made some post 'Oldies but Goldies' discs for a friend recently, and had rummaged through the above-listed website, finding some little nuggets of info from the bootleg listings ('Gimme Some Truth' from 'The Beatles' and 'Another Day' from 'Get Back' sessions just to name a few) Was aware of the MMT differences. It's the one album change by Capitol that I can't criticize. The 'Flying' links were worth it just for all of the pix!!! |

strawberry fields/penny lane were recorded for the album, but the choice was to release a non-album single (George Martin's idea)...so they were left off also - these tracks were not on the original MMT mini-album |

It was pressure from EMI, Capitol, and Brian Epstein for a single release, since it had been (gasp) five months since their previous one. These two and 'When I'm 64' were the only songs completed at the time, so off they went. George does regret not including them, but the generally accepted principle in the UK was not to include previously released 45s on albums. Or 45s after the LP was released, unless there was a nonalbum B side included, and that was rare as well. >also - these tracks were not on the original MMT mini-album As noted... oh, from another thread...so Paul did 'Come And Get It' recently. How cool. A shame his 'demo' wasn't officially released until Anthology 3. One of many tracks that should have been added to the original ol' Red and Blue releases. One other release not mentioned, if it counts, was Paul helping out in producing a George Martin release. I think that covers everything. |

Wore my Sgt Pepper tee especially to visit Strawberry Fields in NYC on December 4th for the first time. Had some British female tourists following us, figuring we knew the way (silly foreigners). Very solemn. Very eerie to walk around the Dakota, and then see some of the documentaries a few days later on the 31st anniversary of that sad day. goodness...I hope you have some/most of their solo hits/albums. Combining the best of that material released before '72 makes for a fine double album's worth of listening pleasure. A belated Happy Xmas (War Is Over) to you. |

Happy (belated) Christmas to you too my friend. |

Nice to see some fellow Beatles fans here:-) Indeed Paul performed "Come And Get It" in his recent tour. I never liked the song much - must have been Badfinger's fault - but it was so fitting since he covered his complete musical history in this concert. |

Did you see it live? |
YourValentine 03.01.2012 05:22 |
Yes, I did - the best concert I ever saw and I would not say that in a fling of enthusiasm :-) Maybe because I was already a fan at the of age 12 :-) |

Lucky! Which gig was it? I saw him on July 26th 2011 and August 12th 2010. Did you see any other gigs? I've also been a fan since I was 12, but mind you, I'm only 14 :) |

The concert was December 1st, 2011 in Cologne and it was my first full McCartney concert. I saw him before on a charity gig in the Royal Albert Hall. I think it's absolutely great that you are a Beatles fan at 14. I was 14 in the last century :-) Here is a video clip from "my" concert link |
