I've never noticed that this performance, although lip synch, was different from the album. Do we know if it was recorded around that time for the show, maybe on the day? Or was it taken from studio leftovers like the rarities disc 2 on FM box set?
Also, were the other 2 songs from this show the same ? Although they sound more like album cut.
The YT comments on this show (which i very rarely pay any attention to) seem to think he was extremely ill on this day, and had taken wads of pain meds to get through it, can anyone send any link to quotes from Peter Freestone or the like?
IF the version of this song was sung close to 88, then I think it gives us a good insight into how he could have changed the way he performed songs to suit his aging voice (if he had lived obv), kind of like how Elton John or Bowie did? He seems to be singing more naturally in his baritone (?) voice at the beginning of this version of Golden Boy (as he did in the album cut) and I really like the way he sounds.
Andy Bell of Erausre drastically altered the way he sung live when he came out of retirement some years ago and sung very deep, giving the songs a very different sound, but still sounded great.
I doubt he would have been able to sing live the same we he did in Magic tour, which for me was a very different sounding Freddie, even more so than the Works.
I remember reading somthing about Fred being ill this day.
Having visible lesions on his face and needing a lot of make up to cover it up.
Also he was not able to perform the songs live and at the last moment they opted for miming to the tracks.
This was in the Jim Hutton book and could have been about the Ibiza performance. Can't remember.

Hi Dane.... Could it be the book 'Freddie Mercury - the defenitive Biography' by Leslie Ann Jones? I remember reading something about it. Anyway it could also be another one, as I own quite a few books about Queen and Freddie.

i Haven't read that book. It was either in Huttons 'Mercury and Me' or in 'The Show Must Go On' (released around 1992)from which the author slipped my memory.
I also remember a story that during one of the Freddie & Montsy performances there was a problem with the running speed of the tape or something like that. And they had to use the version with the vocals, instead of with just the backing track.
Which sounds nonsense to me, because they did a couple of performances and they were all mimed.

Partly true... Peter Freestone told that due to some technical issues the tapemachines were running at the wrong speed.....After the performance Freddie was very pissed when he saw the footage. The productionteam could, when editing the video to the sound, only show about three second max. of a videoshot from the performance before the thing went out of sync.
But does anyone know of the version that was used for Golden Boy, playback or not, it wasn't the original version, nor any other version released since on FM Box set. So would it have been a live take recorded at that time specifically for that appearance or taken from other versions recorded in the studio for the album (a la rarities 2)?
