This is discussed in detail in Freddie's "The Untold Story" documentary. Brian dated Mary for a while and then they remained friends. Eventually, Freddie actually asked him if it was Ok if he asked Mary out on a date, which he did. The rest is history. |

Well, she is 14 or something.. I would've been a bit more diplomatic, but needless to say, maybe this is the moment where she learns that books don't always tell history as it was, and that authors can have personal agendas and/or dollar signs in their eyes that are bigger than their ethics.. Mary is not a cunt. She remained a true friend - she kept her mouth shut about Freddie's personal life, as per his wishes in life. |

Well put Bob! Loyalty is the key to her relationship with Freddie and a mutual respect between them.It seems as though were both protective of each other as well. |
GratefulFan 11.09.2011 20:03 |
Mutual loyalty and respect, by all appearances, yes. "Keeping her mouth shut about Freddie's personal life", I'm afraid not. Wasn't necessary to do the latter to maintain the former, for her or anybody else. |
mary took part in at least one of the BBC Freddie documentaries and she invited the press into Garden Lodge for an interview and for photos.
It was an ITV documentary, she pretty much said what was very common knowledge, Freddie used to come into her cafe with Brian and roger, she could tell he liked her, one day after whispering to Brian over a milkshake he plucked up the courage to ask her out. It was more her life than his. Not really selling out considering the time she was friends with him. |

I'm in the opinion that Mary was a cunt in the way she treated Jim, Joe and Peter. It's as if her true feelings about freddies life style were aimed at his friends and family. I personally dont think she came off very well in the untold story, you can see how she has this resentment for freddie (with regard to his lifestyle and being dumped all those years ago) under the surface. |

So everyone in Freddie's life has to get along? Just because all these people were close to Freddie doesn't mean they were close to each other. With Freddie gone, why should Mary feel compelled to remain part of their lives. Maybe it was too hard for her emotionally to stay in touch. Maybe she just didn't like them. That doesn't make her a "cunt," nor does discussing Freddie in interviews. The cone of silence was lifted pretty much when Freddie told the press he had AIDS the day before he died. Mary hasn't tried to capitalize on their relationship in any financial way, she hasn't a written a book or toured the media doing "tell all" interviews, unlike the very people she's accused of cutting out of her life. Maybe *that's* why she doesn't communicate with them, because of their attempts to make money on Freddie's life and death. Mary's kept a low profile all through Queen's existence, why should she change it now? |
Micrówave 13.09.2011 10:52 |
I heard that Freddie dated Brian May, but always called him "Mary". So they had to find a good cover story so no one would know. It just got outta hand. |

I remain baffled at the apparent need to elevate Mary to something like sainthood at the expense of the others in Fred's life. She seems to be a lovely, gentle person who enjoyed a unique, loyal and inspirational friendship with somebody we all admire. Why the need to leap beyond that and assign her all these extra character traits and motivations we really can know nothing about? She was hardly always reticent and her spread in OK! magazine (a slightly trashier version of People Magazine as far as I can tell) in 2000 was as gratuitous as any interview I've seen from anybody else in Fred's life. Maybe she didn't write a book because she's shy by nature, or maybe she was just busy raising a family, or maybe she didn't have to consider making an investment in time to flesh out Freddie as a complex and substantial human being because two other people did it for her. As I said before, I do understand the gut reaction and the books certainly can be criticized, but nobody has yet made any case beyond the fact that we're just supposed to be appalled on principle because somebody cut somebody a cheque. Books of any nature should be judged first on whether they make a positive contribution. If they do, that somebody was compensated for their time and insight is not that important in the grand scheme of things. They presumably wouldn't be different books if they were written for free. Just because you or I can't imagine choosing an undertaking like that from our own limited perspective (and I can't really imagine it), doesn't mean we know everything we need to know to make a fair judgement. As I've pointed out what feels like a dozen times, they're largely sentimental fluff. It's not like anybody wrote Mommie Dearest. Time to cut those guys a break I think. And time to rethink the canonization of Mary while were at it. |

NO. why? because he'd have disowned them...they were all cashing in...after his death...no respect, no love...no nothing...selfish little c*nts...all of em...and liars to boot!!!! it's clear that everything in the book was taken as read. teenagers are supposed to have inquiring, reasoning minds. once they start accepting everything they're told/read the world is fucked for good. for lifetimefanofqueen i would say one thing: don't come back and attack me for the above. you made the initial vacuous comments. defend your comments with logic and reason and i'll retract, otherwise, just accept that believeing what you read is not always the best perspective to have. Good post. I simply take solace from the fact that the process of natural selection has always existed, so I'm not worried in the least. When I was 14, I didn't think overly critically. It comes gradually. That said, when I was 14 I didn't have forums to just write down the first thing that came to mind. All we had was pen and paper, so we had to think first before writing. We were taught to formulate a thought before expressing it. Computers are eroding away that ability from the lower 50% of the population. Again ... the process of natural selection. Those who can figure it out, will. If anything, from what I've seen, today's kids are getting smarter overall. |

Only have a sec right now, but it's completely freaking absurd to replace the folly of 'Mary's a c*nt!' with 'Jim and and Peter are c*nts!'. I mean Jesus Christ. Like I said previously, delusional. Not to mention the comical lack of self awareness. How about you act like you're the adults in the room and help her not only question what she's read, but help her find some empathy for others and a little complexity in the world. |

lifetimefanofqueen wrote: aye i admit it is pretty feckin borin =============================== You know what is interesting though is the degree to which three separate people living the very same event saw things so differently. Both Jim and Peter in their books expressed some feelings of being pushed out and pushed aside and feelings that Garden Lodge was being scrubbed of the warm feelings it had always held for them because of some of the decisions that were being made. But this is how Mary described Peter, Jim and Joe and that same time in an interview she did in 2000: 'I felt very much out of my depth really,' she explains.'Freddie's staff had been like family to me, but after his death most of them had left because he'd been so financially generous to them. I had sleepless nights worrying about everything. I felt as if I'd done something wrong and paranoia set in. Some of the fans even told me I was only the keeper of the house. That hurt.' I find that really interesting, particularly her description of how and why they left, and frankly I believe all of them. It's so easy to imagine how hard it would have been in the middle of such huge grief and huge changes for them to have accurately communicated and perceived each other's perspectives. I really think Mary did her best in a difficult and unusual situation, and the books don't express contempt for her so much as hurt feelings and hurt pride and confusion. So easy for misunderstandings to have occurred, like Mary offering their gifts to Fred back likely thinking that would be thoughtful and generous, and the guys taking that as having their connections to the house and to Freddie further undone when they seem to have been not quite ready for that. The guys not being able to understand that Mary practically felt sick with responsibility for the whole thing, driving some of the decisions like alarms and access rules and security and such. Mary maybe not fully tuned in to how it feels to have to leave your home reluctantly under really sad circumstances, and that it was a lot more than bricks and mortar to them. Lots of examples like that I think. |

IMO we can't really be sure how correct we are about EITHER Jim or Mary. BOTH were messed up post-Freddie's death, BOTH were probably trying to cope and messed-up people tend to cope in messed-up, weird ways and not always do stuff that's sensible. I felt particularly queasy after reading "Mercury and Me" because as far as I could see some of those details of Freddie's death were things that should have died with him, and not spread out for the entire world to know. I just don't know if I can judge Jim on that score however, because what do I know really? Maybe he wanted to let it all out and over with. Like Mary did. Maybe being around them was too much for her to handle in an extremely tough harrowing situation. Anyway...back to the topic...I think the Untold Story documentary goes into that bit of detail about Brian dating Mary and Freddie meeting her through him. I guess it was more casual friendly dating than anything else, which would probably be why he didn't mind so much when Freddie asked Brian if he could date her. |
Sebastian 19.09.2011 08:47 |
Brian makes it clear on the documentary that they were NOT dating. Again, if going to dinner with a person and not having any sort of romantic contact at all qualifies as dating, I suppose we're all dating 20+ people at the moment, sometimes even simultaneously. |
