This is a version of the famous Golders Green concert produced from the decoded quadrophonic tracks. The vocal is more audible in the mix, as it was previously buried underneath guitars. Cover artwork is included (with heavy inspiration taken from a SnowProducciones design, which I couldn't find in high resolution). If anyone wants the rest of the artwork produced (booklet pages, back cover, disc label etc.) then I can make it when I have some more time. Special thanks to Pittrek for the original merge, and Teddi2002 for bringing the quadrophonic nature of the recording to light. Enjoy! link |

I'll check back when the link is restored. This sounds too good to be true. I've always dreaded turning up the volume on the computer, hoping to hear the vocals more clearly. All it did was make the speakers go static from all the heavily distorted guitars. |

now is working fine thanks a million! :) |

Could you please write down some notes HOW did you create this ? Thanks |
GinjaNinja 07.05.2011 06:07 |
Basically, I just raised the volume of the quadraphonic "rear" tracks. They were mostly drums and bass with a little guitar, so although the vocal was not really any louder, the reduction in guitar volume made it sound so. Process: 1. I duplicated the track, then swapped around the stereo channels in one. 2. I then adjusted the Phasing by 90 degrees. After merging these tracks with the originals, this gave me the "rear" channels. 3. They had noticeably less guitar, and what was there wasn't panned so severely. 4. I wasn't quite sure how to obtain the "front" channels, to be able to properly mix, so I re-imported the original, and just mixed this in with the "rear" channels, thus raising the volume of the vocals, drums and bass in relation to the guitar. I hope that explains it :) I don't think this sort of thing would be possible with other recordings though, but perhaps using spectral isolation tools you could raise the volume of the vocals alone, or adjust other things. |

They don't come out exactly as intended because the matrix coefficients are different, but you do get something. I have the older "Pittrek Best of the Best" of this concert from the enormous torrent, I'll try playing it with Pro Logic turned on and see what happens. |
The Real Wizard 30.03.2012 11:40 |
Cool, good luck with that. |
OwenSmith 31.03.2012 07:40 |
I tried it. The best results are using "Pro Logic II Music". There is plenty of action from the rear speakers, far more than you normally get. And it clearly is quad encoded in some way since the announcer's voice only comes out of the front speakers. However the PL II Music decode clearly isn't right, it's just sound from all over the place with no real cohesion to it. And it doesn't bring Freddie's vocals out, it still sounds like he's singing in the next room through a closed door. |
thefallenqueen 31.03.2012 11:02 |
Freddie's voice sounding like singing in the next door, well that's what we've got so far, that's a pity... |
OwenSmith 31.03.2012 11:15 |
Yeah I know, Freddie's volume on this is a real shame because otherwise it's a great performance. I downloaded the SQ quad decode of this from another thread and that wasn't much better. I can only play either the fronts or the rears from that (they're pairs of FLACs) but the rears have pretty much just Brian's guitar in them. But Freddie is as quiet as ever in the fronts. I did try inverting the rears and adding them into the fronts (playing the two FLACs together in Audacity) to see if it would cancel out some of the guitar but it didn't. Oddly the person doing the restoration in this thread claims that their hand extraction of the rears had very little guitar, whereas the SQ decode from the other thread has mostly guitar and nothing else in the rears. The problem with SQ was that in mono you lost stuff because it cancelled out, in particular the rears are completely out of phase with the centre front. If we've lost stereo seperation at any stage then this will have caused reduction of front centre, which may be what happened to Freddie's voice. |
The Real Wizard 31.03.2012 12:07 |
Sounds about right to me. Good job on the forensic work. No doubt you're going to be a great addition to this place. |
GinjaNinja 31.03.2012 12:22 |
@OwenSmith: I probably just got mixed up between the front and rear tracks, your descriptions sound about right. |

OwenSmith 04.08.2013 12:15 |
Thanks for this, I just hope someone is seeding. uTorrent says there is one seed but isn't connecting to it. I'm dying to here how much improved the voal is, I love this show but the low level of Freddie's vocals spoils it. |
dudeofqueen 05.08.2013 01:22 |
It's not that much of an improvement to my ears - still sounds like Freddie is singing in a toilet cubicle about 3 miles down the road..........great to have though and the BAND sounds great; Brian's sound is absolutely killer! |
OwenSmith 10.08.2013 11:19 |
I agree that this is not much of an improvement. I think part of the reason is this show is NOT quadraphonic. It has made it onto an online list of quad recordings and that says it is SQ encoded. But there are many errors on that list and I think this is one of them. Below is a link to an auction for a copy of the BBC transcription disc that Pop Spectacular was taken from, that is the best quality although incomplete version of this. Note it does not say SQ or QS or any other matrix type on the label. I'm on a quadraphonic music blog and I am told by the person that runs it that if the transcription disc doesn't say SQ or whatever then it isn't encoded. Also he downloaded the pure Pop Spectacular transfer from Queenzone and did a proper SQ decode of it and he says the phase issues that result in the decode means it isn't SQ. link By the way, SQ decoding a remaster is not a good idea. Any kind of EQ can destroy the phase encoding unless special zero phase EQ is used. That's why my quad blog contact decoded the direct Pop Spectacular transfer and not any of the multiple source remasters. Anyway, I hope I've been able to add some genuine information to this debate. There is clearly something wrong with Freddie's voice on this recording, and I agree with others than Brian's guitar sounds awesome on it, but we may never know what is wrong with this. |

From bokkepoot's excel file: link |
aristide1 05.11.2015 10:06 |
tcc, why do you insist on keeping alive this thread ? Try to accept there is no vocal restoration and the so called decoding has failed. Wrong matrix or, more likely, not quadraphonic at all. |
SkyeTV 05.11.2015 17:21 |
Because someone asked for a reupload? Even if it's not an improvement, should the thread die if people still want the file? |
