Recently went to see U2 in Sevilla with my wife. At the grand old age of 47 it was my first U2 show. All the more surprising as I've liked them since their inception. Despite it being a fantastic spectacle I have to say that the sound was terrible. Sure, we were quite far away in a stadium but if Queen could get it right at Wembley all those years ago (and I do remember great sound at that show) what's wrong with U2 in 2010 ? The sound was horribly compressed apart from the Bass and Larry Mullen was barely audible. Anyway put this together and what we heard was a messy rumble on everything but the quieter numbers. A very expensive (€100 a ticket) dissapointment. I suppose it could have been the acoustics in the venue but did anyone catch them on the tour and experience similar problems ?
I went to see the U2 360 show at Giants Stadium in NY last year and I didn't think there were issues with the sound, and I really enjoyed it.
I know a lot of people complain that it's hard to actually see them band on stage, but it's hard to create an intimate atmosphere at a stadium show where there's so much demand for tickets.

Yes 'Intimate' and 'Stadium' are two words that don't really go together and given your experience it could have been an off night. Still the average price of tickets was 90€ and with 80,000 people in attendance then do the math. It shouldn't be too much to ask that the sound is sorted..
Despite everything it was still a great show. With better sound it probably would have been the best show I've been to..
I personally have never seen them live, but I do know friends who went to see them at Parkhead Stadium, Glasgow years ago and said they wouldnt go back to see them again as the sound was awful.
