I've never thought that.
Probably because I was actually at the first Earl's Court show and the auditorium was quite dark before the show.
But the more I look at it I think you may be right.
The style of the 2 guys certainly looks '70's. The only other possibility is an American arena (on the Queen / Lizzy Tour).
Any other offers?
Thinking again, no it's not Earl's Court because the Crown lighting rig was at it's low position only a few feet off the stage before the show began. There is no sign of it in this pic.
Also the video screen is far higher than the one's they had at Earl's Court.
If there is a video screen there than that would mean that this pic wasnt taken in the seventies.
They didnt have a video screen then.I certainly didnt see it in the Glasgow gigs.
I was also trying to see what was on Ratty's t shirt.
Hi BoRhap
Maybe "video screen" is the wrong technical term but I can assure you that at Earl's Court in 1977 there was a huge screen on either side of the stage. Before the show they were showing vertical colour bars - a kind of test card. During the show they were showing a feed of the show coming directly from the cameras that were filming the show. During Bo Rhap they showed the video of the operatic middle section while the band were off stage.
In the picture there are 2 speaker / monitors with the logo stenciled on them. To the left of the top one you can what looks like a screen hanging from the ceiling. If it is a screen then it is in the wrong position to have been at Earl's Court. Also it looks of a higher quality / thinner type that may well have been in use later. However the almost flare type jeans say that it is unlikely to be much later than 1980.
I am pretty sure that is not Ratty. Ratty has straight hair and I've never seen him with a beard. He's also thinner than that guy.
I believe it was in the seventies, since in 1976-1977 those monitors with the logo stenciled on were used during those few years of touring. They might have gotten new monitor equipment for the Jazz tour later on, therefore it couldnt be in the 1980s.
By the way, the guy on the right looks a lot like Chris Taylor, could it be?
The one man looks like Crystal. Guess as to when? 76-80. Arena looks like it holds 12-15 thousand. The 'pizza oven' rig could be at its highest point. Or it was in '80, when it had been 'broken up'. Where? Could be Europe, could be some place obscure like Cole Field House in College Park, MD. I know it's not Kalamazoo or Detroit, if that helps.
Where you found this pic might prove helpful to those playing the game.

Hi splicksplack
Thanks for the info.I didnt know that at that time Earls Court had a screen of any sort.In the seventies tours i only ever saw them in Glasgow.Being as i lived there at that time.
I can identify the roadies - Crystal (with a beard) is on the right and I think it's Brian 'Nudger' Spencer on the left - Stage equipment supervisor (ANATO), sound technician, monitor mixer (ADATR, NOTW, Jazz) - latter courtesy of Mr. Scully's site. I don't think this is in the UK. Venue is too big for the UK ANATO tour and I don't know of any venue with two balconies in the UK of that size, from that era. I would date it to between 1976 and 1978 and probably some stadium in the USA. It's definitely not Edinburgh Playhouse (1976), Wembley (Empire Pool) Arena or Stafford on the UK leg of the NOTW (1978) tour though.
Thanks for posting the photo, I love stuff like this.
However, trying to work out the venue has been driving me crazy! After trawling through loads of photos of US Arenas (which I believe this to be), the best match is Oakland Coliseum Arena prior to its refurbishment in 1996 (Looking at more recent shots, I don't think the pillars exist anymore). Hence, I would probably pinpoint the gig as being the 17-12-77 show on the US leg of the NOTW tour. It could be from The Game tour but the clothes look as though they're from a few years earlier.
If you click on the info button for Oakland on Queenconcerts.com (via The Game tour itinerary as there's no photo against the NOTW entry), you can see what I mean.
Could be wrong but that's my best shot!
Keith.
