"Whether it's Marvin Gaye, Janis Joplin, Phil Spector or a host of others, enough announced music pics stall that it’s hard to find one worth worth getting excited about. Try this one: Sacha Baron Cohen has closed a deal to play Queen front man Freddie Mercury in a film that’s being scripted by Peter Morgan for a 2011 production start."
If true, there's nothing yet on imdb.com about it yet. I'll remain skeptical until I hear something more official. Artists, directors, writers and producers get "announced" attached to projects all the time, a good many either fall-through, change personnel or were total fiction to begin with.
I guess we just wait and see.
Everyone wants to know who will be playing Freddie since the Daily Express article of a few days. Although I welcome the new movie and I must add it is about time..
@Porcelina
Johnny Deep is shooting pirates 4 at the moment, then he has another 13 films in development, he was never going to be available to shoot in 2011.
Shame.
well, then.......I am sorry for being wrong on this.
and, then again, I'll say that I am sorry this d*ck got the gig. We will have zero interest in seeing it.
I don't know man, I've been looking some S Baron photos, his face has an amazing natural resamblence to Freddie's. He's an actor and I think he could surprise us. I prefer him over a high budget movie starred by J Depp actually.
I'd love to see a deep well oriented drama type of film.
I study image and sound design so Im really looking forward to see how this is depoloped. So many ideas and possibilities to make a great intense movie, I hope they don't blow it.
I repeat, I dunno why but I have a feeling that Sacha can make a really good work.

It's too early to be against it, probably. I bet the music will be outstanding and for that alone it should be worth buying the movie tickets to see it in the theatre.
Sometimes comedy actors can do a really good job with a dramatic role. We will just have to wait and see how he does. I have a feeling he will do very well. I am looking forward to it. I can't imagine that the casting will be very easy to do (for the other parts).
I'm disappointed. I really believed if there were to be a movie, Johnny Depp would be Freddie. I was looking forward to that because that guy can assume any character and, in my opinion, pull it off brilliantly. But, maybe it's just because I'm a fan rather than because he'd actually do justice to Freddie.
Sasha? He's known for satire. It's hard to imagine him giving Freddie's character the seriousness it deserves. I hope we'll all be pleasantly surprised.
I have no problem with sacha playing him. The problem i have is with the script , that its only going to cover queen up until Live aid? Whats up with that? i want the whole story being told even the sad parts at the end of freddies life.
Not to forget all the great songs that came after Live aid, they cant just ignore the last 7 years of his life!

I think it is hard to get past the "Oh, my gosh, that is Johnny Depp" awareness when watching Johnny Depp in a movie. So, even though I think he could play the part very well, and I was hoping he would do it too, people would still be swooning over him as Johnny Depp, whereas, I think that Sasha will be able to leave us imagining that he is a version of Freddie. But who knows. We will have to wait and see. I wonder if Johnny Depp could play a smaller part in the movie - something he could fit in his schedule? Oh, well.
