Was talking to an older gent (Gordon) who used to attend my school - a long time before me -and later went on to work at Granada TV.
The subject of Brian's Save me campaign came up and he was asked whether he had ever worked with Queen .
He initially said he couldn't be sure but then ..... has replied.
"I know I posted that I couldn't be sure that I had worked with "Queen", but the date 1974/5 jogged my memory because of
some other incidents.
All the tracks I ever recorded of the groups appearing in Muriel Young's "Lift Off" series, were single track mono
and mixed "live" as it happened. Definitely no editing, "drop-ins" or double tracking.
I remember now that when the group, Queen, came up to the Control Room to listen to the recording they had just made, they asked me, fairly seriously, if I would like to do their gig's P.A.
As they were soon to be doing a tour abroad (Australia, possibly ?) I didn't take up the invitation.
I do not have a copy of the tape in question, keeping material personally was highly frowned upon, and because of the
number of groups and tracks we were dealing with in those days, the studio crews dumped the tapes soon after transmission.
My boss, the Head of Sound, personally undertook a
clear-out of what he deemed to be unnecessary tapes stored in the Sound Studio Control Room, and dumped my hour's worth of recording at the Cavern.
Hind-sight is a marvellous thing.
Gordon.
Have you seen this site? They are not listed as having appeared but it doesn't mean to say they never did it and some of the episodes are lost... link
I've seen the lists about this series and that of episodes of '45' at the BFI - they aren't down as having appeared in the shows of either but I think these lists are misleading. I would really like to know definitively if they appeared in either series.
Sorry - just seen this. They were on '45' but not listed at the BFI as having appeared on this:
45 (EPISODE 26) MISSING
25th December 1974
Introduced by Kid Jensen & Emperor Rosko
Mud - Lonely this Christmas
Bay City Rollers
Colin Blunstone
Ken Boothe
Dave Cousins
Rick Wakeman
Queen - Killer Queen
This would be very mysterious if they had played a complete "Killer Queen" live on that show.
I never saw any shows from "Lift off" but many from "Supersonic", the follow up. And there most bands mimed to alternate recordings which also contained overdubs and probably were not even recorded at Granada.
So I remain very sceptical.
