Queen Archivist wrote: Hello QueenzonersI have a bit of a strange, or unusual might be a better word, request to ask of anyone who might be interested. As most of you probably know, I am working extremely hard on the book which is scheduled for publication this coming Christmas 2010. As part of this project I'm putting together a 2-page spread of 'product' showing the very first example of every new format through the years... i.e. the very first Queen 7", the very first cassette, CD, 8-track cartridge, laserdisc, picture disc, coloured vinyl 7", 12" and LP and so on. I do of course have photographs of all the relevant items, as you would expect, and they all appear in their respective chapters, but what I don't have, but thought would be good to do, are photographs of each of these various items in their original Player/Machine. So, for example, I'd like to include an illustration of a Queen (debut album) 8-track cartridge being loaded into, or sitting/playing inside, an 8-track machine of that time, 1973. Likewise, a Greatest Hits laserdisc sitting on or next to a Laserdisc player of that era, 1981, and the Keep Yourself Alive single and debut LP playing on a vintage turntable of the time. You get the gist. Can you help with this??? The photos would have to be extremely good, bordering on professional, to feature in the book. It might be that some of you fans have these old machines in your attic, garage or shed, and could therefore set up and stage such photos. I'd really like to do this, if possible, as a counterpoint to the 2-page spread showing these items flat and OUT of context as it were.... with various formats also shown IN the context of the Players/Machines of the day. So, basically, if you happen to have access to 1970s, 80s, 90s hi-fi equipment, and a decent camera, this might appeal to you. BUT, the machine/players have to match up exactly with the Queen format in question. I mean that we don't want to show a Greatest Hits laserdisc from 1981 in a player from much later or earlier, nor the very first Queen CD, The Game album (Capitol Records, 1983), on a CD player from 1979. That would defeat the entire object of this. Everything has to match up properly for it to work with maximum impact. Is anyone interested in this?? Thanks |

This is an interesting idea. Too bad I got rid of my 8 tracks decades ago. I wish I still had my old turntables because I could have taken some shots of some of those old 45's on those players. But I've been collecting since 1977 and I have some items you may want to check out Greg. If interested you may contact me at nitrodrum@cox.net. I used to have a black sweatshirt that said "Queen at the Castle" and it was from the Cardiff show, I believe, from the small series of shows the band played in 1976. My cousin Joe got it when he joined the Queen organization later that year as their lighting director. Anyway, contact me and we'll chat. Nino |

I think I still have a Queen laserdisc, the one with different live performances on it. Could it be called Rare Live? I may have an old LD player also. If so, I would be happy to try and provide you with a decent shot. |

Hello again. Thanks for those replies, but I must stress that I DO NOT need any more memorabilia, as I have all that covered. This isn't a request for more memorabilia. I only need photos of machines/players with the relevant Queen product of the day. Thanks very much, but we do have the Queen At The Castle '76 T-shirt, etc. Yes please I'd like to see a photo or two of the Hits 1 laserdisc maybe being inserted into the player. It's that type of shot I'm after. Regards GB |

Books like this live and die on authenticity and through creating a genuine, palpable sense of being present in a time and at a place that lives only in the past. With genuine curiousity and all due respect, what is the supposed value of staged shots from 2010 in a work of this type? Unless it's meant to illustrate what fans, collectors and pack rats can have in their attics, or that media actually has to be put into something (even way back in 1973!), who wants fake pictures in a history book? |

I can provide a photo of me loading the Absolute Greatest Interview CD from the A4 Book Version to my 2009 CD player. This product is the first time a Queen item has been released in this format, and I bought the CD player in the year that the produc was released, so this sounds just what you're after. Alternatively I could provide a photo of the standard Absolute Greatest CD being put into the proper recepticle for it - a bin that was made in the same year. I've just decided that my New Year's resolution is that for every serious question I've asked GB on here that he has ignored (for example Wembley 86 mix variations), for every serious question GB asks, I will post a silly reponse. [/img] In all seriousness however, when this book was originally mooted, I asked a question as to whether you (GB) need info/pics etc.. about the free gifts that used to come from the Fan Club - eg Queen bookmarks, sew on patches with the Queen Crest, Queen transparent window stickers etc.. - are these of interest? |

I too have a Laserdisc player, it's still mounted and ready to play! I'll see what I can do for you Greg, so you can choose some pictures. |

I have Queen 8-tracks--I think all of them, I'd have to check--and a player like this: link Look up the player's history and see if it would match? Email me if you want me to pose some photos, etc. DanielNester [at] gmail dot com |

Email me if you want me to pose some photos, etc. DanielNester [at] gmail dot com That's neat that you have an entire set of 8-tracks! I still get weepy over my 45's (no Queen sadly) on pure nostalgia. Hope you treasure them. If that picture of the yellow plastic thing doesn't convince one that shots of the 'product' (grimace) in vintage players is about the least interesting thing one could do, I don't know what will. First of all the context for 'product' is not a machine. It's the fans, the band, the times, it's place in the evolution of music and tech. Even if that story is largely woven throughout the chapters of the book, it can be distilled in an interesting way into a timeline on a couple of facing pages. The first time a given media was issued is more interesting as part of the larger story of the arc of that media's rise and fall and in the case of vinyl, resurgence. When I think of 8-tracks I think of cars, 45's - teenagers and jukeboxes etc. etc. Those are the images with meaning and impact IMO. In the case of new formats, only early adopters are going to be the ones playing the first issuse in those players anyway. The vast majority of fans who bought the music are going to be later down that timeline and it would be nice for them to see themselves reflected. Anyway, what will be done will be done. On the upside, fans would get a kick out of having their shots be part of the book. I'm sure I'll enjoy the final result very much regardless, and do appreciate the work by all parties. |
