Did Freddie's vocal nodules limit his range live? Or did he purposely sang lower because he knew he couldn't lose his voice during a long tour/show. |
mike hunt 02.10.2009 11:23 |
no Question it did effect his voice. Not in the studio, but live it effected his voice big time. |
Gregsynth 02.10.2009 11:26 |
Yeah, but some reason from the Crazy Tour to the Hot Space tour, Freddie would "go for it" when he had a high note. |

yea, that early 80's freddie was unstoppable live. |

According to Mick's book, Stevie actually had a "hired hand", if you'll pardon the pun, who administered her coke anally during the Tango In The Night tour. No details on exactly how that was administered. It made me think. If Freddie had done this, perhaps he could have hit those high notes with much more authority. So, guys, the next time the prostate exam comes up, try singing Little Lies. |

The only thing I saw wrong is you spelled 'postpone' as two words and it should have been in past tense.
But I understood what you were trying to say.
Let's look at Mike's first post in this thread...
no Question it did effect his voice. Not in the studio, but live it effected his voice big time 1. "no" should have been capitalized 2. "Question" should not have been 3. A comma belongs after "question" 4. The word BUT is a conjunction. A compound sentence is joined by the conjunction BUT in sentence two, but it is NOT a compound sentence. "Not in the studio" does not have a subject or predicate and therefore is not a complete thought and therefore the use of BUT is incorrect. 5. it AFFECTED his voice, not effected it. Mike Hunt's English is far worse than yours and he lives in an English speaking country. Kinda tells you a little bit about the youth of today. I'd say Mike Hunt is blowing hot air. |

I know Mike Hunt didn't criticise QueenPaulo. I was just pulling another example of worse grammar from the thread. I didn't know it would rouse Mike Hunt into action and get his fisticuffs ready. I simply responded the way "tough guys" like to be talked to. Do I want to have a sanctioned bout against Mike Hunt? No. I don't want to resort to violence towards Mike Hunt. Mike Hunt is usually nice... maybe it's that time of the month. Most of the time, if I have a problem with Mike Hunt, it clears up after a couple of days. The lesson to be learned here: Mike Hunt is mine and I am proud of Mike Hunt. I should be able to use Mike Hunt the way I want to. I will try to keep Mike Hunt more in line. |

I'd love to hear how grammatical errors and monkeys have anything to do with Freddie's vocal nodules. Geez, is it possible to have a single thread on QZ without someone bad-mouthing someone else?! Do what I do, if someone uses bad English, just do what I do: 1) If English is their 2nd language, put on your big girl panties and deal with it. 2) If it's their 1st language, who gives a crap? This is a QUEEN forum, not a grammatically-correct-English forum. In fact, we could all speak Chinese if we wanted to since this is just a Queen forum! As for the question at hand, whoever asked it, I'm sorry for all the chaos surrounding your thread and I hope someone is able to answer you kindly (I don't know the answer, but I would guess yes since I've heard the Sun City audio). |

What was the question again? I got lost in the argument.....oh yes, it was Freddie's range - what the fuck is a vocal nozzle? lol I think that Freddie sang whichever way he wanted to anytime he wanted to, there were no other factors than his own personal choice or how he felt at the time. If he wanted to go for it, he would, if he wanted to calm it a little, he would - there was always at least one real gem of a show from each tour and one that was all over the place vocally....but it always came across that he was just experimenting with different ranges. As for the other discussion on this thread, it has been quite entertaining - by far the most intelligent and classy quotes from Microwave I've come across yet. I'm actually beginning to like this guy! (Big hug and kiss from me too, then lol) |

Look up clips from Tokyo 79 on youtube, and you definitely won't be convinced that his voice was ever in poor shape by choice. He was very up and down in the 70s, solid in the early 80s, but by the mid-80s his smoking limited his voice greatly... most high notes were reached only by shouting. He wouldn't go for the first note in It's A Hard Life not because he didn't want to hit it... it was because he couldn't. In the studio you get as many takes as you want, and you can rest for however long you need, but live you get one chance. Live is where the real voice comes to say hello. While he had his countless moments of brilliance, it wasn't always pretty. For those in the know, here's something I've always wondered... did Freddie take vocal lessons before the Barcelona sessions in 1987? Or was he just able to turn on and off the opera influence like a light switch? |
john bodega 02.11.2009 12:07 |
I've never heard anything indicate that he took lessons at that time. I think he treated the opera thing like any genre or pastiche that he'd approached previously, in that he did a spiffing job of it for what he was (an untrained singer) but I guess if you were to hold him up against the standard of real opera singers it wasn't very good. Not that I'd give a toss myself, I appreciate his Barcelona singing for what it is and not what it isn't... |
The Real Wizard 02.11.2009 13:06 |
Agreed. Purists of any genre will always cut a guy like him to shreds for not having the right technique or whatever, but he tried out more genres than most other singers are even aware of. |
