Not sure if anyone has posted this in the past........ we just visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art to see the works of Paul Cezanne (my wife being the art expert)
There were drawings by others included throughout the exhibit, to show the influence that Cezone had on the new era of Impressionist artists.
The link below is for the 'Mechanic' drawing, circa 1920. When asked by the tour guide what artist it reminded us of, she didn't exactly get the answer she was looking for from some of us.....
I tried to, my dear, but I thought the post was even larger than my usual posts, and there were still the paintings I wanted to add - both the Smoker by Cézanne and the Mechanic by Léger - and I realized that it was nonsense and no one would even begin to read it. :-)))
I just wanna say that I went through all this, I enjoyed the link and late at night, at the library, I did a short reading about both paintings.
The most lovely and fun, however, was the unexpected answer to the tour guide's question!!!
I laughed out loud, *goodco*, and I wanna thank you both for sharing your experience there and for creating the thread.
For me there's no question that Freddie's much more likely to have influenced Léger than that Smoker painting by Cézanne.
Of course there's the issue about the timing. How could Freddie have influenced a picture from 1920? Then I remembered the books I enjoyed reading by that Russian mathematician, his name is Fomenko, I guess, which proposed a new chronology to historical events and challenged the modern dating methods and archeological findings. To sum it all up, according to him, everything we regard as History began in the period we call the Middle Ages - everything either took place or was created in the Middle Ages and developed from then on. The learned men from the Renaissance, such as Erasmus, were a favorite target of this curious mind. Even ancient Roman history is medieval. Yes.
So, if the war between Greeks and Spartans took place at the same time as the One Hundred Years War, and if it's even likely that the documents refer to the same war!, why couldn't Freddie have been an influence on Léger? The tatoo on the Mechanic's arm is very telling. :)))) And, frankly, the Smoker by Cézanne looks nothing like Léger's painting: we only know there's an influence because Léger told so. The only thing in common is that both individuals are smoking - period. Hahaha. Everything else is different.
Yes, I was (was?) that weirdo, I used to like reading everything good mathematicians and physicists wrote; not only the scientific part, but also their, uh, doubtful taking on other issues - like Newton did, for instance. By the way, Newton proposed some corrections to the then established chronology too. lol
But his thing was different, he liked alchemy - ok, no prob, chemistry came out of it, alchemists had good and groundbreaking ideas alongisde the nonsense - but it was not only that, he was into some kind of weird mysticism which was a bit scary, I must say.
Take care, my dear, and have a wonderful Friday!!!
--- and it ended up being, again, a long post. But an average one to my standards, the other one took more than a page. :op
