I know I should really be ashamed of this...but I haven't seen any of their films. I've seen some old episodes of their show and thought it was awesome but never got around to seeing classics like "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" or "Monty Python and the Life of Brian". Yesterday I saw a boxed set of Monty Python DVDs but it was quite pricey. To Monty Python fans out there: Is it worth it? Should I get it? It's a set of 6 DVDs worth $200(includes A Fish Called Wanda and some other films I haven't seen).
I've heard that unless you get offended by the content, you won't find it that funny. What about that?
I have no aversion to old comedy movies, I still laugh my ass of at Blazing Saddles, Dr. Strangelove, Young Frankenstein and The Producers(the original one, not the hideous remake).
$200 is a lot of money for 6 dvds as far as im concerned, you probably better off buying them individually via amazon or ebay.
'life of brian' is worth getting definately,as long as you are not offended by religion being torn to shreds at every opportunity.
'holy grail',python at their best, just for the "its just a scratch" moment, pure Python brilliant nonsense :-]
'meaning of life' has its moments and one of the best tunes in movies with 'every sperm is sacred' but i found it a bit hit or miss and i dont think it has stood the test of time [mho]
I agree with trying to buy them seperately if you can as in Uk they're probably available for between 5 or 10 pounds.Holy Grail and Life of Brian are both excellent tho probably not if your a very religious person lol.I personally wouldnt bother with The Meaning of Life,It has the odd good clip but overall I thought it abit disappointing.Might be worth looking out for And Now For Something Completely Different.A Fish Called Wanda isnt really "proper" Python but worth a watch.
Holy crap! That's a LOT of money for the movies. Definitely buy them separately. I only paid $200 US for a 16 disc collection of the entire series of the TV show with 2 bonus discs of live shows.
Personally, I don't get offended by anything they do in the shows/in the movies. I find it hilarious, because they take the every day observations which are funny to start with and just take them to the level of ridiculous. Of the movies, Holy Grail is my favorite far and away. I'm pretty sure I can quote the whole movie if I tried. Incidentally, it's also the most accurate movie portrayal of life in Medieval England that's out there (as far as dirt, death and disease, peasants vs. lords, etc). We even used clips of it in the Medieval Europe course I was co-teaching last year.
My next fav is Meaning of Life. I'm surprised that it's possible that sketch comedy can be done for the length of a feature film and keep your interest, but it's true. The Protestant Couple is fantastic, as is the Sex Ed lesson from John Cleese. Then of course there's the music; Every Sperm is Sacred and The Universe Song. All great stuff :-)
Life of Brian is not exactly my favorite, but I don't find it offensive and find it hard to see how people could find it offensive. The movie isn't about Christianity per say-- it's about what religion can do to people when they use it as an excuse to turn off the brain. The aliens scene in it is something I think they should have cut from the movie; it serves no purpose. But the Latin Lesson is HILARIOUS! Once I actually took some Latin it became even funnier because I realized that the stuff in the lesson is REALLY the way Latin functions!
I haven't been able to find Now for Something Completely Different, but I'm hoping to get that when I get a Netflix account going :-)

I'm atheist. If anything, I'll enjoy it then. I'm gonna try to find them separately.
Good choice.I think you'll love the films and be quoting lines from them for the rest of your life lol
I always find that whenever anyone mentions the Life Of Brian to me I have to go n dig out my dvd and watch it again.

you can get a 6 disc box set of monty python films on amazon for around a tenner and the Python monster boxset for under 60 quid so I think if you pay £200 for 6 discs then you are crazy. If you just want to check out some python without spending too much you can get both The Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life in HMV for a fiver each
Found a copy dirt cheap this weekend... hadn't watched it since I was a kid. Classic Cleese as Robin Hood. This was a Terry Gilliam project that's very eighties... and still good. A bit long, though.

Time Bandits is okay, but not a patch on proper Python material don't ya think?
Def get Life of Brian & Holy Grail. 2 of the best comedies of all time. Plus you get to see some muff in LOB which is an added bonus (and some cock if your that way inclined... or female).
Monty Python is one of my favorite comedy shows/troupes along with the Kids in the Hall. I would say that Python material either in movies or in the show are all worth it, but if you wanted to go to amazon you could get their entire series in the megaset and in some cases you can get some Monty Python Live included in it. I;ve got the Megaset, their personal best, live, and a all their movies and I don't know what else. I also have the two shows that led to their show "At Last the 1948 Show" and "Do Not Adjust Your Set". If you buy anything thaqt you like, it is definetly worth it.
It is really strange that I am an American that is 27 years old and I know about this stuff.
I even have all of Roger's solo albums and all of the Cross albums as well. And only a handfull of Americans even know about those. lol
