Well in those days in the early seventies and late sixties even, men were often found wearing fur coats with blouses and tight satin trousers usually with long hair too.....especially in the arty circles.
So Fred's look was not that unusual for the time and as he was still young would not of experimented with same sex relations til he knew inside of himself that the time was right.
So having girlfriends on his arm and even having sex with them would of stifled any question or rumour about his sexuality by the people closest to him including Brian.
A lot of guys need to experiment with girls to make sure of their sexuality, even if they know inside that they are gay. And not everyone has the courage to come out at an early age either, especially if it can affect their career.
Of course it was a lot harder then than it is now and was less known and talked about and accepted than we do these days.
Freddie was always a private individual about everything personal to him and would not of wanted to share his inner thoughts and feelings even to those around him.
Nothing unusual about this.....so it is no surprise to learn that Brian did not know.....why would he?
Yeah - saw that on Yahoo last night. Begged the question as to where the quote came from, when and, most of all, why it warranted being a news headline.
BRIAN: "I know that all through his life Fred didn't think that whether he was gay or not was important. He loved music, he loved his work, and he didn't want anything to get in the way. Anyone who portrays Fred as purely a gay story is missing a lot of the point."
I think the whole point is that by not addressing it and letting people wonder if he was gay or not, it very much did "get in the way".
If he had just come out with it, it would then have been done with and everyone could get on with the music.
It may also have been a sign to other gay people that it is nothing to be ashamed of and that there is no need to hide the fact away.
I suspect that Fred wanted to create an air of mystery and knew exactly what he was doing. By the mid 70's he had a well established London group of gay friends (including Peter Straker and the late Kenny Everett).
I would have thought that Roger would have known.

Yeah I remember May saying this about a year ago, so what exactly makes this news?
We should ask the question to several news services that published it again the other day, as if it were a brand new interview - even in Italy it made a second round on national papers...
The reason this topic has come up again in the press is because of Brian's recent interview in the January 2009 issue of Record Collector, which is out now.....and also features an unseen photo of Queen on the front cover.

And what was that "look" that Brian was throwing down, then? If Freddie was a pansy, then Brian was a daffodill.
