It doesn't matter. In fact, it's a roll-your-eyes kind of story. And yet, the vatican felt the need to 'forgive' after all these years of... what? Holding a grudge? Condemning the man? All those things the church is not supposed to do, right?
And it wasn't a boast, as the vatican calls it now. It was an observation. People expressed passion and enthusiasm for The Beatles in a way they did not express it for religion. John Lennon was right. The Beatles were, in that moment, more popular than Jesus Christ. Nothing need be forgiven there.
Sad, isn't it, that the vatican had this urge to embarrass itself this way? But then again...
