It seems silly to me to hate a book because a minor character died.
For me, it was mostly enjoyable (despite the first third of the book being somewhat tediuous with almost nothing happening), although it is not as good as most other Harry Potter books.
I did give Harry Potter a shot once. It just wasn't working for me. That was... the first book, I think. My sister read all of them and used to talk about it endlessly, so I don't really think there'd be many surprises in the books for me if I were to change tack and try reading one.

It's because I have a twin and I know how I'd feel if she died.
