It's long been believed that Capital Radio broadcast this show live. Numerous Queen-dedicated sites have this info but I'm wondering where the original theory for this came from? Was the info around before the first edition of Greg's book? Considering London as a whole had a population of over 6 million people in 1976 I find it hard to believe that not one tape of this broadcast has surfaced. OK, Capital Radio wasn't a national station so their range may have been limited but I cannot believe all the likely tapers of a radio broadcast were at the event. Even with the poorer equipment we all had back then somebody would have taped the show if it were on the radio as stated. Take out the diehard fans who went to Hyde Park on the day and you're left with the serial radio tapers who tape programmes just because they're there to be taped. I've taped shows by bands I'd never go to see, I'm sure we all have. As for a transcription disc, again I don't think so. Did Capital Radio press discs for the Genesis show? I could well be wrong, I'm hoping I am and a broadcast tape of Hyde Park surfaces, but I think somebody who didn't/doesn't understand how radio worked/works in the UK made this story up and is secretly laughing at us for chasing a 'holy grail' that doens't exist. The BBC didn't have transcription discs for every show so why should a small local independent radio station have pressed some for Hyde Park? Don't believe all you read in the Bible....indeed. |

You've got a very good point indeed. However, theoretically, we could say that it's possible, if the show was broadcasted, that those who recorded it are now dead, senile, without internet, not members of Queen-related communities, or simply don't want to share what they have. |

Hi I'm agree with you. I have collected Queen records in 28 years. A 'die-hard' collector. It's just "Golders Green 73" (part of) & "Hammersmith '75" (part of) which has been broadcasted on radio. + part of Wembley 86. (first day, might been mixed with 2nd one). All 3 shows are out on vinyl promo disc + CD promos exept of 'Golders Green'æ.(I don't count all the boots). The Rainbow concert on March 31st. is NOT from a radio broadcast. I'm not sure of history, but I'm sure it's not from a broadcast. Sounds like it's comes from a multitrack tape. I have NEVER EVER come across ANY who have tape of a radio broadcast from Sept. 18th 1976. It was not done. There might was a plane to do, but for some reason, it wasn't done. I'm quit sure of this. |
Snefru 23.08.2008 16:23 |
Golders Green are out on a 1-sided vinyl promo disc. But, not on promo cd. But many boots are out. link |

I started trading tapes around the end of 1976 and was active until I'd say around 1989 when I moved home and gave/threw away everything we believed we couldn't take with us or wouldn't need. I'd not only grown tired of the whole business of duplicating tapes but music in general had lost a lot of its heart and soul (for me, at least) during the 80's My move to CD back catalogues in 1986 had somewhat eaten my available funds so it seemed like the ideal time to stop trading in tapes and video. Anyway, back to Hyde Park. I had several trading pals who lived in the London area, all of whom were within Capital Radio's range. They all knew I was interested in Queen but none of them had anything in the way of special Capital Radio broadcasts until the 1977 Genesis show. Those people would certainly have mentioned a live 'on the radio' broadcast of a major band but didn't. Either they had forgotten or it didn't happen. To this day I'm of the opinion that it was a proposed plan, perhaps spoken of and reported in the music weeklies as going to happen PRIOR to the event but by the time the weekend arrived the plans were pulled. Possibly Capital Radio had onsite interviews with the artists involved but didn't broadcast any live music. Think of the logistics for a moment....a small independent (i.e. commercial) radio station undertaking a live broadcast from a huge open air event in 1976 is in itself a non-starter. Think not only of the costs involved in having the equipment there to make such a recording possible but also of how they planned on broadcasting such a recording, live, when as far as I can remember the BBC (a heavily funded public service) didn't broadcast from festivals like Knebworth, Glastonbury or Reading back then (1976) - if they did there'd be Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Utopia, Hawkwind radio recordings from those festivals. There aren't. Think also of the negotiations involved with the record companies and the artists' management teams to provide on-air recordings. Shoot me if I'm wrong, of course :-) T. |
tomashenka 23.08.2008 17:24 |
Hiya Sebastian Theoretically, yes :-) However, those that are dead might have traded back in the 70s; those that are senile might not always have been so (I know, I know, I shouldn't say such things); those without internet connections still had the music press to make contact with other traders back then; those that aren't members of Queen communities....well, that's their hard luck. Seriously for a moment though - it does seem a little strange. We're talking about a radio broadcast in the 25th largest city in the world not a radio broadcast in Elmo. T |

Good topic. Look at this below: Further to my earlier message about Planet Rock (222.06 on DAB Digital Radio) broadcasting live from Hyde Park in July I have just heard the following on Nicky Hornes show. 'We will be broadcasting all day from back stage at Hyde Park, and at about 9 o'clock, whilst the guys are on stage, we will be broadcasting the original Hyde Park gig from the mid '70's in its entirety. This is not a shoddy bootleg, the band have made available to us the original master tapes of the concert, and we can assure you that they are far better than anything you may already have heard'. This was announced back in 2005, when they (Q+PR) did the Hyde Park concert. And guess what... it never happened! Logically, I mailed them about this. No answer. Then I decided to mail Capitol Radio. No answer. It's really a mystery to me... |

It's really a mystery to me...Yes, I was about to mention this - I remember there being a bit of a flutter on this very website about it, with various people planning to record and then share here (I think). Was it the case that it didnt happen because from memory the show was moved by a week due to the terrorist attacks in London? Its a plausible reason. For the same reason Justin and Dan Hawkins never got to appear with Queen - which was planned (I think they were going to do Now Im Here and a Darkness track). But that said - the announcement you quoted mentions original master tapes (presumably recorded by the band, and used for things like the version of Sweet Lady on the ANATO making of disk the other year) as opposed to a radio broadcast recording, so this neither solves nor debunks the Hyde Park radio broadcast X File! |

good topic. link just found this, see the nme review states don maclean was broadcast from 1975. so capital radio were doing it before the Queen show, maybe it just all fell apart for 1976 back to lurking gary |

hoops wrote: good topic. just found this, see the nme review states don maclean was broadcast from 1975. garyGary, very interesting find. If somebody/anybody has a copy from the day, as opposed to an airing later or a rebroadcast, then it will at least prove that Capital Radio 'could' have made a live broadcast in 1976. As for the proposed rebroadcast of HP76 at the time of the 2nd Hyde Park I'm sure that was nixed becasue Capital Radio thought they had the rights to the alleged recording only to find QP in the way. I doubt very much that Capital Radio have their own tapes of HP76. The search goes on. T. |

By the way, my own take on the birth of the Hyde Park broadcasting myth is that it got somehow confused with Hammersmith Odeon 1975. There are some BBC Transcription Service LPs from the early '80s with this show - but no precise date/venue information is given in the accompanying sheets. I remember hearing one of these LPs in which the announcer wrongly states that the concert was indeed in 1976. |

That is exactly the CD I have! By the way, searching on the EIL.COM site I have found these: link link In these pages says that the year of the concert is 'circa 1976' but the scans of the actual information sheets have no mention of the date/venue ...as far as I can see - although the tracklisting is clearly from Hammersmith Odeon 1975. Perhaps this is the LP I was talking about. ...And sorry PG - I do not have the CD with me as I am working 1000 km. far from home! I just happen to have some scans from my 'radio' CDs for a catalog I am preparing. |

Ok, thanks for info about that PROMO cd inc. Golders Green 73. I didn't know about it. |

I have a handful radio proimo vinyl & cd's of Queen. That link over is to a scan of Hammersmith 75 show, which I'm sure you all understand. Some of this promo live records have DJ in the beginning, say's Queen recorded in 1976. X-mas show was so late in the year, so for some reasion, it's announcing as a 1976 concert. This might confuse someone... |

Although it was about 21 years ago, I saw with my own eyes a BBC transcription disc (LP) in a second hand record shop in Canterbury which I am sure from memory was Hyde Park 76. I suppose after such a long time my memory could be wrong and it may have been something like Hammersmith 75 (did that get released as a promo transcription disc??) I remember it being a plain black sleeve and a white and yellow label on the centre of the disc itself. Any help?? |

I can't remember exactly how much it was but it was certainly out of my range! I did however pick up an original (not bootleg version) of the Bulgarian Greatest Hits Pic Disc for £17 (which Record Collector mag rate at £600)a couple of years later, so it's not all bad!!! |

cmsdrums wrote: I saw with my own eyes a BBC transcription disc (LP) which I am sure from memory was Hyde Park 76. Any help??Not possible, I'm afraid. It seems a lot of people are confusing BBC and Capital Radio, they are not connected in any way, so there cannot possibly be a BBC transcription of the Hyde Park 76 show. Sometime around 1984 a lot of BBC In Concert radio programmes started to appear as bootleg LPs mocked up to look like the genuine BBC transcription discs. Some even had an information sheet. I know of one Cult collector who paid handsomely only to find out later all he had was a common bootleg LP. T. |
