Hey guys! I'm thinking of downloading some Led Zeppelin bootlegs (video, not audio), but I have no idea what's really worth downloading and what isn't. Can anybody give some suggestions? If possible, The Trader's Den and Dime links would be welcome. :) I nearly began to download their Knebworth'79 DVD, but then I stopped myself... Is it one of the concerts from that era when Jimmy Page would be full of heroine and miss lots of notes? |

If I may offer a piece of advice, speaking as someone who started collecting bootlegs from other groups.... Look at Dimeadozen, like you've said and see what's there (below is what I found via a search)... link Build up a collection and see where that takes you....perhaps if you've got a favourite album/song of theirs you may look for shows related to that? Of course, looking for a similar sharing network for Led Zeppelin and see what other fans recommend. |

Just download a couple and make up your own mind - it's not as if it costs you anything. I've listened to loads of concerts I'd never have bothered with if they weren't so accessible. |

Southampton 73 is an awesome sounding concert, I'd try and get that. |

Get the ones with Jimmy shooting up heroin before the gig!!!!!!!!! Those are his best!!!!! XD |
Raf 05.11.2007 02:25 |
Thanks, Chris and P_G. So yes, I think I'll give Knebworth'79 a try. If I don't like it, I can download others. ;D David, thank you! :) Did they still play the Immigrant Song around that era? @ Jessie: Nah. ;) |

The best known/easiest available/most enjoyable pro-shot Led Zep live DVD's are Knebworth, Seattle 77 and Earls Court 75. |
The Real Wizard 05.11.2007 08:01 |
If you're only after video, then there isn't too much of it. You definitely need to grab the best versions of the Earls Court 5-24-75 and Knebworth 8-4-79. Also, try seeking the best copy of the 8mm audience video from Los Angeles 3-24-75 show. It's a gem! Audio... Los Angeles 9-4-70 (Blueberry Hill - Cobla), Southampton 1-22-73 (any version of the multitrack, which sounds like an official release), and Los Angeles 6-21-77 (first gen, Winston Remaster) are essential. Trust me! All of these are at TTD. |

Thank you, Bob and Jeroen! I'm actually downloading the Knebworth'79 gig, but 8-11, not 8-4 (which was partly released, right?). I was wondering if it's a good performance, as I read somewhere (I confess, it's Wikipedia!) that from 1976 until the early 80s, Page often did a poor job for being high. And thanks for the suggestions so far! :) |

And thanks for the suggestions so far! :)Since 1976 Led Zep just wasn't as good as before anymore as a whole. (MY opinion!) It was not just a matter of Pagey's drugabuse alone. Plant was in bad shape more often and no longer able to sing the high notes. PLUS he was not very much 'into' it anymore after his son died... And although Bonham was strong as ever (and JPJ... well, I never notice him ;-)...) the band just never sounded like that iron fist they were in the early years anymore. |

Oh, thank you! I'll make sure I'll have a few concerts from before 1976 then... ;) To be honest, what really made me begin with this DVD is the fact that they played Kashmir. :P It's one of my favorite songs ever. But I'm really interested in downloading some stuff from their "best" era. |
its_a_hard_life 26994 06.11.2007 08:54 |
Kashmir was playing in HMV stores while I was in my lunch break looking around there. Reminded me of you, Raf. :) |

<font color="lime">Raf840 wrote: I'll make sure I'll have a few concerts from before 1976 then... ;)Basically... from 1973 onward, the band began their decline, as that's when they got heavy into drugs. The later it is, the less frequently the band played good shows. In 1973 there are a few weak shows, a lot in 1975, most in 1977, and 79-80 had very few strong shows (the Copenhagen warmups and Rotterdam/Zurich/Frankfurt 80). But even in those strongest 79-80 shows, the band sound like a shadow of their old selves. 6-21-77 and 6-23-77 are essential shows. The band were much into their decline overall, but these two shows are golden. The last show with a strong hint of the "Hammer Of The Gods" is the last of the six nights in LA, 6-27-77. They played for 4 hours, but Jimmy was just so wasted that he played about an hour of guitar solos sans band. But aside from that, there are many incredible moments. But for now, start with 6-21-77, and see what you think. In the opinion of many Zeppelin collectors, it's the best and most energetic version of The Song Remains The Same to start the show. |

I wonder how this bidness in December is going to go? Hmm.... |
Raf 07.11.2007 07:20 |
Thanks a lot, Bob! Summer holidays will begin here in Brazil in about a month... I can tell I'll have a lot to do! ;) |
Raf 10.11.2007 03:47 |
Yesterday I watched the Knebworth DVD! I'm impressed, and the fact that they weren't even on top shape makes it even more impressive! I'm gonna seed that DVD and the Guitar Expo'92 some more, and then I'll download more. |

The zepp never decline, have you ever listen 6-21-77 aka Listen to this eddie? one of their best shows ever, you should get that along with (i'm not going for the sound) Copenhagen in 79, 2-12-75 Flying Circus at New York, Fillmore in April 1969, mm some shows from 1970 like Montreux, Houston, New York, L.A (Blueberry Hill) Oakland (amazin show), from 1972 check the Australian tour, L.A show, some of the japanese tour, from 1973 you're gonna love the European TOUR, their peak as a band, Seattle, New York, L.A from 1973, and the best tour in my opinion is return to the clubs 1971, check the Copenhagen show from May, amazin, freakin show, Plant at his best, the japanese tour, the recent montreux show, and from the last tour Zurich is a great show, a new zeppelin, in a new era |

This link is very interesting for people who do not have any Led Zeppelin material: link I have a fantastic book about led zeppelin's live shows: Led Zeppelin , The concert file by Dave lewis and Simon Pallett. Like sir GH said:most landmark performances can be found at the traders' den. |

Why go for live bootlegs only? There is an excellent 11 CD boxset of Led Zep studio outtakes - which is really worth getting hold of. I think it is imaginatively entitled: 'Outtakes und Rehearsels'. link |
MercuryArts 19.11.2007 12:59 |
John S S, I'm not familiar with that box set. Is it a bootleg of studio outtakes? Was it released & I somehow missed out on it? Can't be. Anyway, I have a cassette w/ outtakes from the Griffiti sessions. Includes In My Time of Dying, The Rover & some Elvis jams. Theres more to it but I can't remember. It is great hearing Bonzo chew out Plant cause he keeps messing up the timing of vocals on IMTOD. "You don't F-ing listen thats your problem Bob!" is what he say. Priceless! |

MercuryArts wrote: John S S, I'm not familiar with that box set. Is it a bootleg of studio outtakes? Was it released & I somehow missed out on it?Yes, bootleg, and yes it has 'physically' been released as I have seen the CD's at record fairs. There are other studio bootlegs too. Now - I would never advocate breaking the law, but I have also seen this 11 CD box set on some torrent sites, but I genuinely do not know where to download from. I think this is why Queen fans sometimes feel a bit miffed - as 'most' other bands seem to have loads of studio bootleg stuff! |
