I have a question for all you clever Queen fans... I was looking through Wiki and came across an article about AKOM, and it said that Freddie and John hated Gimmie The Prize, can anyone confirm this? Thanks, M.H |

I don't like it. Although it has a couple of strong singles and the videos for them were very cool, I don't think it works as an album. And only 9 tracks? Apart from the singles, there is nothing remotely interesting for me. I find it boring overall. I'd rather listen to GH2 as it includes the best half of this album and a bunch of many other great tracks. Gimme the prize is cool but nothing too spectacular, One year of love is bland, Don't lose your head is like a bad dream. It's very much in the bottom of my list of favorite Queen albums (switches places with Flash Gordon and Live Magic every now and then) and those are my reasons. Wiley |

Freddie seems only interested in doing disco/dance stuff to impress his circle of friends. The same could be said for John. Only Brian remained true to the vision that was Queen. damn akom was my favourite. I always thought that "a dozen red roses for my darling" was queens commercial breakthrough, in other words that a dozen red... gave Queen the status they have at this moment... Shit I gues I;m wrong...Then Body Language must be the reason of Queen;s nowadays succes... |
M.H 10.08.2007 10:50 |
I have always thought that the main problem with AKOM is that there is no overall style or sound (ie, Gimmie The Prize/Princes of the Universe vs. Dont Lose Your Head/One Year of Love), but I do enjoy it, and I'd say it's one of my favorites, Take care all =) M.H |

I like Hot Space a lot, much more than AKOM, which bores me to death. Yes, the Magic Tour may have been huge and whatever but the album is not very good, IMO. Even The Works, which is Queen's self tribute to their former hits, is more inspired than AKOM. It could have been an ass kicking soundtrack but they went the other way. Wiley |

My knock on 'Prize' is the soundtrack voice-overs......and that it sounds like it was the POTU demo. A way to make this weak album pallatible: Side 1: OV / AKOM / OYOL / FWBFWBF Side 2:POTU / Brian's 'Just One Life' (due to the similar drum mix) / Prize / DLYH / WWTLF not great, but it's the only way we listen to it |

The Works had 9 songs as well. Nowadays people complain if there's as little as 11 songs on an album. I think people are spoiled. |

"Princes of the universe – In any universe this is pure crap. Talk about a totally uninspired piece of shit" 'Princes' is probably Queen's best song of the 1980s, and certainly their best since the last really great song of that era, 'Rock It (Prime Jive)' from 1980. Can't really argue with much else you said though, except to say the songs on AKOM sounded okay when released and it's only now, 20 years later, that they sound really dated. A lot of 80s music is like that, not just Queen. |
