I was thinking the other day, what if Queen pulled every single hits album (every incarnation, every volume...hell, every compilation period) and put out just ONE "Greatest Hits" album worldwide? What would it look like? What tracklisting would be universal enough to be suitable for the entire planet? Now I'm talking about a single disc here, 17 tracks only. What would you choose to be on it and why? Keep in mind this isn't a "These are my favorite Queen songs" question but rather a genuine attempt at putting together something realistic. So I put it to you, Brian May, who has said before that Queen were not a singles band, wants to rid the world of all Queen compilations and wants just ONE hits album as their sole replacement and asks you to come up with one, which 17 songs do you respond with? |

"Tie Your Mother Down" has to be on there somewhere...it's ridiculous that's not on more collections, it's a benchmark of the live shows and Queen's sound. Unless purists only want what crappy Billboard says are hit singles, which isn't really relevant since Queen was more of an AOR band. (According to Billboard, songs like "Stairway to Heaven" and "Wish You Were Here" aren't hits, though they should obviously be on any Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd collection.) And the fast version of WWRY should be a bonus track ;) |

one greatist hits, no, that would suck cause they have too many good songs, and it's a lot better to split queen era into three parts which is what they did and they were just right. |

A 1 disc greatest hits set would be pointless, because you'd have cut off a lot of the greatest hits. You can't work off chart positions here, as they are based on the number of sales for all singles that week. What can get a single to number one one week might get you to number 10 another. If there was just one release, it would make sense for it to be a 2 CD set with all the hit singles on - then no one can complain. |
goinback 05.05.2007 17:59 |
Marcenciels: No prob :) IMHO=In My Humble Opinion The pop world is generally all about singles, the rock world is generally about albums. When people focus on Queen's singles, they then also think of Queen as a pop band rather than a rock band. Lots of Queen's album tracks got regular airplay in the '70s that weren't singles (Tie Your Mother Down, I'm In Love With My Car, '39, Get Down, Make Love, etc.) and thus could be considered "radio hits". In the '70s DJs could play whatever they wanted whether it was a single or on Billboard's Top 40 singles chart or not. The Queen Rocks compilation sort of tried to be a compilation of their radio hits (and thus make people remember Queen were really a rock band rather than the pop image they were getting) but the track listing was a little disappointing. |
marcenciels 05.05.2007 19:21 |
ah !!!..thank you for your humble answer...lol.. yes, i agree almost 100%...lol... in the 70 you could call up the radio station and ask for a song, most of the time the dj said yes and you got to hear it, i'm old enough to prove it...loll...now, it's gaga !!! but for me, Queen is more than just a rock band, you cant label them 100% straight foward, that's why for me they are THE BAND OF ALL BANDS!!! we can hear a certain influence in their debut and that is normal for the time's, the 70. where i am from, it's such a culture battle that Queen is tagged pop, only one station plays oldies, but always the same one's -((( 17 hits ?!?...it's for ignorents who just live the art of sound on the surface ! sheep's...as pink floyd would think. i'll stop here, or i'll get emotional...lolll... |
bitesthedust 06.05.2007 08:38 |
Queen Rocks was mostly a vehicle for Brian's best known songs. An alternative would be to have 1 Greatest Hits album (based on chart position) and another compliation of other songs based on general popularity. |
marcenciels 06.05.2007 11:29 |
one thing that would nice, is to have 4 best/favorites of 12 songs from each member. i know, i know...like brian once said... "Queen is better than the 4 of us" |

Eh, not really :) There are Top 40 hits, radio hits, AOR hits, etc. Saying "Stairway To Heaven" isn't a hit just because it wasn't a single and not in Billboard's Top 40 seems silly, though unfortunately you're right and most people assume Top 40 hits when they hear "Greatest Hits". So first the first step in any Queen compilation would be to remove "hits" in the title ;) |
AlexRocks 12.05.2007 15:13 |
I for one do think that they should do a three c.d. "best of" covering ALL of their studio l.p.s with the best choices as possible (and not neccesarily hits but literally a best of) that would have three new songs on it with one or two being an unreleased track or tracks with Freddie singing and one with Brian and Roger singing and maybe Paul Rodgers on another as well as one of the songs serving as a title track AND tour behind it...but I'll save all of that for later! |
