Yep, I'm going to one! I will be in the march and will lay a wreath at the memorial along with the Head Students :)
I think it's a good day not only to remember those who fought, but to remember how two countries came together, fighting side-by-side and looked out for one another. Even though they came from two different countries they formed a force as if they were all from the same place and overcame the odds. It's such an awesome thing, really.
If someone knows a little more about this, because I am no expert, please enlighten us. These were by far the bravest soldiers I've ever read about and have much respect for their patriotism.
This should be a world-wide recognized event.
Well...theoretically we are celebrating a failed campaign. The Commonwealth and French Forces (yes, the French!) were to invade Turkey and capture the Gallipoli Peninsula. Then the march to Constantinople/Istanbul would begin and the Ottoman Empire could be knocked out of the war, making it one less ally of Germany.
Sadly that didn't really eventuate. The campaign dragged on for 8 months, neither side really gaining any advantage...although I suppose you could say the Turkish forces had the advantage all the time.
That being said around 44,000 Allied troops ended up dying. I think what makes the ANZAC spirit so powerful is the fact that Australia had only been a country for 14 years and our Kiwi friends to the East had always been gallant fighters (wouldn't you be if you lived in a country where there is more sheep than people! :)). People do seem to forget/misinterpret that there were other forces there but the ANZAC Spirit sounds better.
Now days ANZAC Day is really a day to commemorate other Australian and New Zealand losses during wars and conflicts since 1915. Similar to Rememberance Day but...more specific to Australian/NZ forces.
Love, love, love.
I hope you all are having a good ANZAC day, here in New Zealand we've had record numbers at most of the major centre's services which is good :)
And this is to add on to what iGSM said link
I think it's a Dutch...thing actually. Zeeland. I'm not sure.
I don't think we were going to call it ANAC. Just doesn't have that flowing off the tongue feeling.
Much like ANZUS Treaty...ANUS doesn't sound as promising, y'know.

Yes, the French P'd out, as usual. These guys were heroes. The percentage of survivors is shocking, but it didn't stop them from fighting.
Great thread, thanks for making us all observe the day.

You know, if the water pills I've been taking hadn't drained the last bit of lithium from my body which it had been storing for over a year, I'd probably have something entertaining to say here.
