according to the highlanderthesource.com website the other week the film is part of a trilogy with the first due for release in the US in sept and will feature 4 Queen songs but from what i gathered they will all be cover versions.
why cant they just use the originals and be done with it?
I'd say the second was worse than the third. The third was just a bland retread of the first, bad only in it's blandness, whereas the second had all that stuff about outer space and aliens and that... Now the fourth one, that was a bit dodgy, bit still better than the second IMO. Wonder what this fifth one will be like...
First one...the only one as far as I'm concerned. The 2nd (The Quickening) was sci-fi nonsense. But actually, I hear the renegade cut of the film is worth watching. It cuts out all the other planet gumph, etc.
The 3rd one (The Sorcerer) with Mr Van Peebles was marginally better, but just a bit bland.
4th one (Endgame)... oy... A few weeks ago it came on tv as I was busy working. I left it on as I worked away and it was the longest 90 mins of my life!! It felt like a badly edited and highly convoluted story. Full of a whole load of unnecesary stuff.
Funnily, I get why it's the way it is. I wrote a film back in 2002-04 and my first draft felt like that film. Full of stuff you think needs to be seen to get the story across, yet is just holding the point of the film back.
Anyway...moving on.
The 5th. Another film...eh? Who keeps making them??? I only hope that with this or the next(!) blows me away. But then I wonder how it could. *sigh* What a waste of good material. I know there are people that never liked Highlander in the first place, but I get the feeling there's a great story in there somewhere, waiting to be told.
As for the idea of Queen songs. Covers you say? Well...whatever. We'll see what happens.
Adam.
I think you mean there 'should' be only one.
I never laughed quite as hard as when I dug out Highlander II from my video cabinet for the first time in ten years (having just watched, and kinda enjoyed the original) and immediately was confronted with this NONSENSE about another planet that wasn't even in the original film.
Fantastic.... "Oh! Ramirez! I remember! A completely different storyline 5000 years ago on another planet!".
Makes the first one look like a David Lean film.
I see no point in making another sequel. The first part is fantastic: it contains great acting, excellent soryline, of course remarkable music and despite of time passing it's still pleasureable to watch. The second was a mistake, however the director's cut version is OK to watch, if you forget about the first part. The dir cut (so called Renegade Edition) doesn't however cut the crap about Immortals being creatures from another planet, but it adds some very good scenes that justify the heroes' decisions (e.g. while watching the standard version the whole attempt of visiting Alan in prison seems pointless, in the dir cut it's got whole new meaning); the movie is crappy, nevertheless. The third part is quite enjoyable, but lacks characteristic adversary (I like Mario Van Peebles but not in this role). The fourth one is so plastic, that I was forcing myself to watch it. What about the animated series? I think, they are crappy too, but I was enjoying these, when I was a child.
Erm... Boys and girls, I watched the movie. And I can tell you that it sucks in the worst possible way. The bad guy is so laughably ridiculous that I can't even begin to describe him. You just have to see him to understand what I mean.
However there are two very cool Queen references.
1. The end titles are played to a very cool cover of "Princes of the Universe". As covers go this one ain't half bad.
2. At one point, just before he kills one of the good guys, the bad guy starts singing "Who Wants To Live Forever".
Other than these two references, nothing stands out in the movie. Not even a few good immortality-related jokes can save it. Boring, really boring. I've read Highlander fan-fiction on the net that's significantly better than the official movie. My advice - don't waste two hours of your life on this one. Rather rent the first one and watch it again, or try to catch some re-runs of the TV show.
