Last winter was the last band I was in, as everyone here wants to play punk music and people would classify the music I write as 'classic rock' and said it sounds "nothing like GREEN DAY".. so I put an ad in and I'm going to try going for bands not in my area, bands that can actually play rock music instead of punk music. No offence, but Green Day is over-rated and there's too many bands tryig to re-do their sound and it's nothing something I want to do. I have like two auditions in the next to perform in regular rock bands, so wish me luck.
Keyboards and vocals. And none of the bands I'm auditioning for said Queen is an influence, so if I end up joining one of them, they'll have a taste of it. Especially musically, I can't sing like Freddie... I probably sing more like Brian Wilson. but I'm just glad none of them list any punk rock bands as an influence. I really like one of the bands music, a lot of nice laid back stuff, and they don't try to be 'another similar band'.. they actually perform originals, and they are open to new things.
You know, once I wanted to write a funk song in the last band I was in and I was laughed at. I see nothing wrong with funk. I don't care what people say, I think Hot Space is something Queen, and Queen fans, should be proud of.
I'm also tired of bands which have one member who writes everything. I'm so sick of that. A couple music adventures I've been in, they'd tell me what to write. Usually something punk. One idiot told me to write a punk song, I told him to write one since I'm not going to, and he came back with a song, an acoustic song and not in any punk style that I can think of, and it mentioned a girl's name, and was pretty lame. I've got it on a cassette somewhere, and I really hated it. I thought it was nice, but he was like obsessed with the girl he wrote it about... it had her name in it, I think at that time he met her twice. I didn't feel comfortable singing that song. I recorded it though with him on the acoustic and me on vocals. I told her about it (as I knew her before he did) and I told her what he wrote the song about (her) and she laughed, in the long run, they never dated. If the lead singer is going to write the majority of everything, why not be a solo artist?
Yes, I know what you mean. I had the great honour of being in the same band with the best bass player I've ever met and the best singer/composer I've ever met. And it was so cool, because we would play the song as the composer (which could be me, or the singer, or the other singer which was also a keyboard player) had arranged it in first place and then we would add our little touch to it, and great ideas came out of that. It's amazing to see how your song evolves into something bigger, and seeing how the other's ideas are sometimes so cool that you would have never come up with something like that.
Like, sometimes the song would have 2 guitar solos, one played by me and the other one would be played by the singer (he was the 2nd guitar), and I would say... Why should we have one solo for each guitar player? We should have 2 solos played by both guitar players at the same time, and I'd add some counterpoint stuff, some harmonies and it was always great to played that kind of stuff. It's so much better when the solo sounds like THE BAND, and not like THE GUITARIST + THE BAND.
I like to be meticulous with the arrangements... I don't like the bass to play the root not of the chords, or a rhythm guitar just strumming along, actually I hate that, so I always try to think of ideas for each instrument... playing all those instruments really helps you.
And I would write the bass parts, trying to make them cool... but this guy (the bass player) would take my idea and add things, and it'll end up being great.
He'd add some slap here and there, even tapping and that kind of things that I would have never though it would fit the song, but in the end he makes them fit. And that is priceless.
So, fuck punk bands, go rock bands
xD
Good luck with your audition. The key is having some bands in common, not so many, but at least a few.
I seem to get into bands around here kinda easily..but I'm also the one of the only 14 year old bassists....
but anyways,
I HATE GREENDAY!!!
My mate loves them and it's soo annoying - worse than me and Queen
The band I'm would be nothing without me.
Being the only songwriter can be tiring.
Kinda sucks actually. It's like the other guys don't have minds of their own, because it seems I'm the only one with the ideas.
Greg Brooks is working on an Alliance box set which is scheduled to be released shortly before the birth of Jake's first grandchild.
Oooh I cant wait.
fatty.

My advice is to get the fuck out. I found that situation very draining and stressful!!
