Do you recon Brians Guitar Solos at concerts were necessary. They went on for over 10 minutes and i bet it was a real bore for the majority of the crowd. If you werent a real die hard fan or someone who loves guitar solos it would've been a sour point at a concert in my opinion. In Greg Brooks many of the exherts from reviews about thir concerts make point of this.
Yes, I think simple admirers might find guitar solos in general quite long.
On the other hand, don't you think Queen fan would have been disappointed if Brian hadn't given them those ten minutes of guitar music?
it was extremely boring. I always fast forward this. I play guitar and love guitar solos but BM's is boring. There are no peaks and valleys.Just valleys. I know Sir GH would disagree as he knows the diffrence in the solo from night to night.
Yes, the solos are boring.
I thought that if Brian wanted to show us his stuff and what his guitar and echo were capable of then a few instrumental versions of songs like Keep Yourself Alive, Great King Rat and Liar would have gone down a storm!
Now that wouldn't be a boring 10 minutes!!!
I always found his older solos to be boring, especially in contrast to the ones he uses in songs. However I think he has found more interesting and tasteful applications to the delay effect more recently.
having seen him do (practically) the self-same solo on five times on four separate tours...i can confirm...it was fucking tediously dull
however, in fairness to Brian - he is not unique amongst lead guitarists (as opposed to guitar players/singers) in that they all fucking do it...
Townsend, Blackmore, Angus, Schenker, Moore etc....the ten minute solo is pretty much a standard at most rock gigs
it's the guitarists way of saying "hey girls look at my cock...i can make it stay up all night"
It's a rock concert. What was he supposed to do? Magic tricks?
Watching Brian pull a rabbit out of this hat would have been entertaining. Maybe they could saw John Deacon in half... then bring him back for Leroy Brown.

Haha, you made be laugh thrice today till now. You're one of the funniest around here...(along with Pim & Niek and Zebonka)
Other than Brenski and myself who have seen the band live back in the day you would know what a very energetic performance the band put on. The guitar solo provided a nice break for the other 3 for that time period. The videos don't really do any justice to how much they really worked the stage. Ah, the good old days...

Not ENTIRELY true... I think, in the sense that his solo never changed much, you're probably right in this case. However, there is a certain emotional release in exploring guitar sounds for a good length of time. I wouldn't do it on a stage ordinarily though... talk about snooze-fest! Not everyone digs a half hour solo. They're fun to do, not so fun to inflict on people. Hehe.
Personally, I would've loved a bit more variety in the long solo Brian did. I know he's capable of it, every now and then he pulls something that is really pretty neat.
What I'd really like is a studio version of 'the' solo. He's got 30 years of experimentation to build off of.. I reckon it'd be fantastic.
Well, if you find Brian May's live Brighton/guitar solo boring, than you are my polar opposite in musical taste. For me, it has always been the peak of any and almost every Queen show.
The solo is just too long, I never watch it. I liked the solo on Live Killers, it was really good and fresh. The problem, as someone stated here, is that Brian has been playing this solo for 30 years and it's more or less the same every time he plays. It probably sounded new and interesting in the 1970s, but not anymore. It's disappointing he never developed something better, it all sounds as if someone is just trying their new guitar. If he wants to keep the solo in future concerts (if any), he should play 5 minutes maximum, not longer.
His solo can be amazing or it can be awful. I remember one show during the QPR North American tour where I could not wait for it to end while at other shows it was excellent.

hmmm...??
Maybe just the once it would have been entertaining
Technically though???
I do find that Brian's ten-minute guitar solos are boring and Roger's drum solos too. He keeps saying he hates doing them so why do them? I think that Brian, Roger, John and of course Freddie all get umpteen chances to 'show off' as someone puts it in the heavier Queen material of the early Seventies, Liar and so on. Mind you there was less of that in the Eighties of course.
I love the guitar solos and i've never been fed up of them not even once and to say that they don't differ i beg to disagree for example 1974 and 1975 are completely different to 1976 and 1977 is totally different to 1976 etc...
They have developed and changed and sometimes shorter and condensed in the later years but i'm off the opinion that i want to hear the best guitar sound in any way shape or form.
So rock on brian may!!!.
