In hindsight (no pun intended!), SWL, you COULD say that Freddie was irresponsible. You could also say he unlucky. Tens of thousands of other gay men were as promiscuous as Freddie and lived to see today. Others who were a fraction as promisuous as Freddie and others contracted HIV. If your argument is that he could have been safer, you're probably right. He didn't die alone and had many friends. But you won't bash him as a musician because you like him, so...? Maybe you're just angry that we lost him! Or that...he was bissexual and behaved as a kind of androginous on stage. But is anyone willing to critique his stage performance? I think that's one of the things about Freddie that are unassaiable: he was terrific on stage. He was, and always will be, just a recording or a picture - to those of us unlucky to have never shook his hand or whatever. So in essence we actually sort of agree... you feel he is kept alive in his music, and good for you. However I choose not to canonise him - he was a human and he fucked up just like everyone else does. And to Yara - I respect the majority of what you just posted, but you have to put my post into context. There's a guy in this thread saying "Freddie is God". To me it's no more ridiculous than saying "Fuck Freddie" - both are rather extreme (and exaggerated) views to have. |
