Once upon a time I bought off of ebay this Bonhams catalog (#1793) auctioning Rock and Roll and Film Memorabilia - the auction date being Tuesday 16 November 2004 in Knightsbridge, London. link On this page was: link How sad is that to see Freddie's beautiful outfit without him in it?! The description was: "Freddie Mercury's stage costume, 1980s, comprising a bright yellow jacket in military style with multi-buckle fastenings and a pair of white trousers with red and gold piping, lower left leg with pocket, together with a statement of provenance. L8,000 - 12,000 This distinctive outfit was worn by Freddie during Queen's sell-out 1986 'Magic' European tour. It also made an appearance in the video for the 1989 single release, 'The Miracle'." Why would Freddie want a pocket in the lower left leg of his trousers? I've read that the costume was sold for various amounts, one being L26,290. (I don't know if that is correct.) The photo was described: "Denis O'Regan: Freddie Mercury, St. James Park, Newcastle, 1986, a large photographic print sealed in UV film and mounted on a thin aluminum panel, signed by the photographer and numbered 1/10, 183 x 122cm (72 x 48in) L500 - 600 The first concert of the band's 'Magic' tour, 7th June." Wouldn't you love to have that picture?! It differs slightly from this photo/pose link as in this one Freddie's body is more rotated to his left. His white trousers on the top of his thigh above the stripes isn't visible, and the right side of his jacket front isn't as visible. I wondered why I had not seen this pose in the Wembley dvd - it didn't happen there. Does anyone know what stage of the 'Magic' tour this photo is from? link Does anyone know how many yellow jackets there actually were? There had to be more than one in case of spills, rips, other damage, drycleaning time, loss. Somewhere I read that Freddie, when he was offstage, would sometimes strip down, get wiped off, get dressed in the very same outfit, and go back on stage looking all neat and clean. |

It's not a pocket, it's just a horizontal seam. And I expect there were up to half a dozen jackets in each of white and yellow And the photo looks like Wembley to me. |

But aren't there grandstands in the back? I remember the lower blocks being quite small in Newcastle, just what it seems like on the pic. And yes: pathetic. I once tried to convince friends of mine that Roger's pic in Live Magic is from cologne, because I could tell from the floodlight... we should get a life. :-) |

1986 was a funny year for fashion - I'm pretty sure the trousers I wore to see Queen at Slane had pockets in the lower leg. I think I had some snacks in them. So if it's good enough for me, it's good enough for Freddie! |

I don't see a pocket on the left pant-leg. But who knows right? That picture is at Wembley, look at the background of the pic, and then look at the stadium itself on the dvd. Its Wembley. There are a lot of pictures from that particular concert, that weren't on the dvd, but also keep in mind they used footage from both nights. |

This is from Slane: link and at the right hand side, the image lines up with the Freddie photo. |

Oh and I've just realised how I know it's Slane. The photo in question of Freddie is in one of those Queen photograph books. I think maybe by Mick Rock but I'm not sure. I flicked though it once about 8 years ago in a shop. This also may be it: link Vin |
Penetration_Guru 02.03.2007 17:20 |
Your recollection is as random as your accuracy. Mick Rock almost certainly took no photos of Queen after the Sheer Heart Attack album, and absolutely none on the Magic Tour. Secondly, I wouldn't trust any book to caption correctly. See the picture of Van Halen in the current issue of Record Collector... |

bigV wrote:NO!!! We are not pathetic for knowing or wanting to know these details! I think of Queen as one of my hobbies. Have you ever talked to coin collectors and listened to all of their itsy bitsy details about this coin or other? When I watch Antiques Roadshow on PBS in the USA, and the people from whatever city the Roadshow is in for that episode bring in their stuff to be evaulated, the appraisers can look at a vase for instance and talk about when and where it was made and who made it and lots of other details. I think of Queen as a tapestry, and each bit of information just fills in more color. I think it was in Peter Freestone's book where he was talking about Freddie's attention to detail and how when they made the Body Language video and the woman singing in the green sequined dress had to fall into the cake just right because there was only one cake made to fall into; and I thought, "I never saw a cake in that video." But when I looked at it again, there it was - a life-sized cake, and the shot was maybe three seconds.vinny2256_ wrote: I'm very sure that it's slane castle.I'll have to go with your guess. I believe he said that Freddie never carried anything - his people always carried his stuff, like money; plus early on when he was out and about, his pants were so tight, he couldn't possibly have put anything in its pocket. In one video clip, the speaker said that one time they were in a restaurant, and before Freddie sat down, he looked around to see if anyone was looking, and then he zipped down so he could sit down. |

So, the first edition of it looks like it came out in 2005, and I see another edition is coming out July 18, 2007, and it can be pre-ordered. Does anyone know whether the second edition is worth waiting for? |

Quite awhile back on youtube there was the Knebworth Magic Tour as filmed by someone in the audience with the images shot from the big screen. Does anyone know if that backbend pose is on the Knebworth concert, and if so, what "part"? Thanks. |

vinny2256_ wrote: Off topic but I found this on youtube and thought it was interesting: link Was this concert recorded professionally?I've seen "Slane" before as referenced to concerts, but I didn't know it was in Ireland. Thanks for the info. This is my amateurish guess, but since it looks like the Magic Tour, I would say it probably wasn't recorded professionally as Wembley was the main focus of the Magic Tour's recording by Queen's familiar people. Being that filming is so extraordinarily costly and complicated, plus adding on to that editing and distributing, Wembley was the clear and only focus. Live In Budapest was the Magic Tour, but it seems like Budapest professionals taped that as it said somewhere that all of the "tv" cameras in the country were rounded up to do so, and in the credits, the names of the camera persons are not English names. |

Just going back to the 'pocket discussion' . In this month's Q magazine (in the UK) with that somewhat dubious 'Top 100 singers' the accompanying picture of Freddie is from the end of a Magic Tour show and you can clearly see the pocket somewhere around the calf of the inside left leg. I'd never noticed any pockets before at all...still not sure what he kept in there though... |
Kate4Freddie8 10.04.2007 12:09 |
Right i think its Wembley because of the t-shirt. He changed into it about half way through the show. THEN HE RIPPED IT! in big spender,(on purpose), this means he DID NOT wear the same t-shirt in any other show. Such as Budapest in the Magic Tour! He wore a completely different one. If he had more than one he surely would of wore it, but he didnt! :P HEHE. Thanks! |
