hi people !
I asked this a couple of months ago, but my search button doesn't work. I want to know your opinions about this. I think the Hyde Park concert from 1976 was really a special one. The first really big concert for queen in front of 150.000 people ! This has a great setlist, things like flick of the wrist, a long medley, KYA (especially the great drumsolo), YTMBA, Liar, '39 (especially the high bit with Roger), etcetera. You can hear that they are a litlle nervous in the beginning (I think Ogre Batlle is not that good) haha, but that's only natural. The rest is superb. The filming of this concert is really good, because they also filmed and recorded the audience and there are some incredible air shots. Freddie was incredible, Roger behind probably his biggest drumkit ever and John and Brian good as always. So far, so good. We all know the crappy version from QTV of this concert. I don't know if there is a better version among fans of this concert.
Last year there was the release of ANATO 30th anniversary and we saw a very good clip of "Sweet Lady". I think both picture and sound are nice. We also saw the solo bit of Bohemian rhapsody and the delay part of Prophet's song. They also showed us some footage of '39 but this was only picture and no sound.
I think this was really incredible and above my espectations.
Now for the experts :
Is the audio quality (is it multitracked of how do they call this :P) good enough ? I personaly think the picture quality is good enough. Remember it's a concert from 1976.
Do you think this is good enough for a proper dvd release and what do you think of this concert?
cheers !!!
It isn't one of their better gigs, is it? Sloppy playing, particularly from Brian (who often goes out of time) and Freddie is off key quite a bit throughout it. It followed a huge US tour, and it had obviously taken it's toll on them. I'm sure from a technical aspect the multitracks are perfectly releasable. I haven't watched the Sweet Lady clip for ages, but seem to remember the image quality wasn't that great - but then, it wasn't that bad. And, you've got to remember QP had touched it, so it could never be as good a quality as it could be.
Hyde Park was in the middle of recording sessions for ADATR in September '76, there hadn't been any live shows since April '76 and wouldn't be any until January '77.
Yes, according with Lester Burnham I think HP76 had been the right concert (huge audience)in the wrong moment (live inective period of the band). Anyway I think it's historyc gig for Queen and worth the official release in the future.
Well, they did have a couple warm-up gigs in Edinburgh...
Let's face it, it was their first show to more than 15,000 people. They were nervous. But by the fourth or fifth song, they got into their groove. All in all, it wasn't one of their best shows, but it's pretty important for historical reasons. I'm sure they learned a lot as a band from that show.
I don't foresee an official release on a grand scale, but I can definitely see them including a few songs on a boxed set of some kind... whenever that is.
It's fairly well known that the master tapes (video that is) were stored poorly from '76 until '86 and damaged. Sweet last is a different story because that song was used on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1976 so another copy existed and that was used on the CLassic ALbums DVD. QP always said the whole concert would never be released due to the quality of the damaged tapes but with the tchnology of todays restoration techniques, I assume that wouldn't be a problem anymore.
The audio was supposedly remastered and was meant to be played on radio when QPR played at Hyde Park in 2005 but that didn't eventuate for some reason.

Ah yes, I remember that. That was a major disappointment.
