I'm gunna have to buck the trend here....I thought that was the lamest halftime performance I've seen in a long time. He started off tapping Queen WWRY, which aggravates me most of the time anyway. Then, he only did TWO songs that were his own. I mean, come on! This guy has a catalogue that has MORE than enough stuff in it to have him have performed his own stuff. Had to play some CCR apparantly, which would have made more sense had the show been somewhere other than Florida in the middle of a downpour. He never looked like he was having a decent time playing the show, even at the end he looked pissed. And those two girls who were doing the "choreography"? Don't even get me started. That wasn't choreography, and whoever was hired to teach them that should be shot...it was a lot of "swing your head around and make your hair fly in the wind"...not dancing at all. The only decent part was the marching band they had on the sides with the reflective tape on their uniforms. Having been in marching band before, I know it take talent to play an instrument with good quality and breath control and dance at the same time. Before the hate mail arrives, I am NOT dissing Prince. I like a lot of his stuff. I just think the show could have been MUCH better to do him more justice. **braces for response** |

Haven't seen the halftime show... Someone have a link? |
Donna13 05.02.2007 10:36 |
Wow! I just watched it. (I went to bed before half-time last night - was so tired - I think a cold might be coming on). Anyway I TIVOed it, so... I thought it was great. I appreciated the WWRY lead in. That must have made Brian feel proud. A very good charged-up rock performance by Prince, with great guitar work and a good tribute to Hendrix as well. Glad he got in Purple Rain with all that rain. Couldn't have asked for a better situation for the drama of it all! As for the dancers, I do think they tend to take away from Prince a bit sometimes, but it is kind of his signature style. Did he use them in the old days? I can't remember. Great that nobody fell down on that wet stage. I think it was one of the better half time shows. Prince has really held up well over the years (and I am referring to his music). He is still Prince. |

I enjoyed the performance immensely. Donna13 pretty much summed it up for me. :-) |

In his "old days" it was him on stage in a trench coat and briefs with his band. link link |

If U2, McCartney, Britney & Aerosmith were better halftime shows, then count me out. This was the best halftime show I have ever seen, period. I've seen quite a few. In fact, with the sloppy play and the lame commercials, I think PRINCE stole the Superbowl. 2. If you'd seen Prince's press conference, you'd get why he started tapping WWRY. Expect one thing, cause you're not getting that!! 3. Proud Mary was an Ike Turner song, CCR covered it to. Did CCR have the right to cover it when they did? 4. Try playing a guitar in the rain and humidity and look happy. You can't. By the time you smile, the damn thing has gone outta tune again, so he's too busy "tuning on the fly". 5. Those two girls (they were identical twins, by the way) were not for you CMU, they were for me and the rest of the guys. We don't care if they're choreographed or not. They looked good! |

'Proud Mary' was written by John Fogerty and recorded by CCR, then was covered by Tina Turner. |

Those two girls (they were identical twins, by the way) were not for you CMU, they were for me and the rest of the guys. We don't care if they're choreographed or not. They looked good! First, I never said that Paul McCartney, Aerosmith or U2 were better halftime shows. As a matter of fact, I think that the shows have really gone down the tubes since the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake thing. The network has made the shows too damn wussy for fear of offending someone. Not that boob action is my thing, but when you have wussy shows that are less about the art and music and more about "How can I do this and not step on anyone's toes" it ceases to be about the art anymore, and that's what I was complaining against. Second, don't really care he started out with WWRY...it just throws me for a loop when other people do it. I can understand no name artists doing it to get their name out there, but this is PRINCE we are talking about...he's got enough of his own riffs he could have done and have been recognizable. The CCR thing...I don't care who copied who first because it really doesn't matter. It's a good song, and is doubtless to be copied by many people. Microwave, you are missing my point here...it's PRINCE'S halftime show; he's famous enough that he can do his own stuff and get credit for his own work, rather than relying on other stuff and risking coming off looking like he's scrambling at the last minute and just pulling out the cover artist thing. He just looked like an artist doing covers because he doesn't have anything original of his own, and we all know here that he's MUCH better than that. It's unfortunate he came off looking like that, because he doesn't deserve it. Yes, I realize that performing in the rain isn't the best of situations. That's why you have a back up plan (which evidently he didn't have or want). But even at the end he wasn't smiling!! I mean, come on! I realize he was concentrating like hell to play the show in those weather conditions, but he at least should have been happy to have done a decent show and maybe, maybe given a smile at the end; if nothing else a smile of relief. He just looked pissed. The girls...yeah, I realize they weren't for me, and I wasn't criticizing them at all. I'm a football fan, and I've gotten used to the whole scantily clad cheerleaders bouncing around and acting like airheads. What I was criticizing was the choreography, or lack thereof. I realize the stage was wet and they were in heels and don't even try to say I don't know what it's like...I've danced in heels on wet surfaces when I was in showchoir. But half of being a dancer is again making sure you look like you are enjoying it. No problem with the girls...the choreography just sucked. |

I hear now that some TV Critic moron has complained that "He (Prince) used his guitar as a phallic symbol". Apparently he was moaning about the "shadow effect" bit during Purple Rain, where Prince and his guitar was projected onto a sheet, was "a rude-looking shadow show" that was "embarassingly rude, crude and unfortunately placed" |

I love Prince, I have all of his CD's at home, but I didnt like the show either. I just want to old nasty Prince back: Head, Darling Nikki, Dirty Minds, Private Joy etc. I still like him, but I liked him better back in the day, before 1988. |
