If you know the local venue where you live that usually hosts travelling Broadway productions, they can probably tell you. They will also tell you that you get to pay a fucking lot of money to go see it (and don't expect to see the kind of sets like in the movie - it's a travelling company, after all - unless you live in New York or something).
I have the original cast recording... I saw it when I was little, and I've seen the movie. I like the first, don't really remember the second, and I liked the third except for the Phantom, I don't mind the whole "He's a baritone" thing, but he sounded like he was in a bad kind of pain on the high notes (and Baritones can be bases for Counter-Tenors, too !).
And stuff.
My mother suggested Freddie as the Phantom before we had even heard the rumour / whatever that he had recorded a trial of it.
And some other stuff.
Phantom is what got me interested in theatre and musicals to begin with, so I owe it a great debt of gratitude. I've seen the play live in Chicago at the opera house there, but I have to admit the casting wasn't great...our Phantom had a bit of a gay lisp to his speech which doesn't bode well for being intimidating. But the stage effects were fantastic, and the music is phenominal. I was worried when they came out with the movie, because I thought that they would kill it...but I was pleasantly surprised by how well they did the movie. I actually liked the casting of Gerard Butler as the Phantom, even though he's not trained as a singer and sang it alittle more rock and rollish than purists like. I personally think it should be sung that way. Plus, he was very attractive to look at....:-)
I've also see the Paris Opera House where the story was based on when I went to study abroad in Paris in the summer of 2004....we didn't have time to go inside, but I have TONS of pics of the outside.
If you are interested in seeing the show, check out the official show website here: link
PS. If you like Phantom (the powerful music, full of emotion and all that stuff) check out the soundtrack for Les Miserables!

I watched the newest version of POTO a ton around this time last year and found myself becoming depressed by it...sooo...I gave it a rest...lol It really is a lovely musical, though.
I've only heard the soundtrack from the play because my mum has it on cd. I love the music. I used to listen to the first song way too much when I was little.
I've seen both play and movie, and the play deffinately beats the movie, though the movie is awsome. Freddie would be the hottest phantom ever.
And then I think Roger should play Christine. They can reach pretty much the same notes, and Roger is way better looking than she is!
