Queen Archivist 20.01.2007 22:41 |
PART 1 of 2 In a thread elsewhere on QZ, a person (Seven_Seas_of_Rhye_II) who knows nothing about me whatsoever, OTHER than what they've gathered from QZ - which of course is about as unbiased and impartial as Jade Goodie is talented, feminine and eloquent - wrote this about me... "Yes, Greg makes mistakes and he's lazy as I've heard." Now then... his/her other comments aside, I am intrigued as to why certain people have it in their minds that I am lazy. What do they base this on? Are they here with me, and do they see the number of things I am working on at any one time? No, they do not. But they feel qualified nevertheless accept without question I am what some QZ bandwagoners say I am. For people here on Queenzone who dislike me - of which there are many - some are jealous of my job and cannot get beyond that, and others are not, but dislike me anyway (fair enough)... for all these people, it suits them to perceive me as lazy. It is human nature to find things wrong (founded and justified, or completely unfounded and unjustified) in those we dislike, to see elements in them which are nasty and unpleasant, and to fill in the gaps of what we don't know with things which suit our preconceived ideas of how they 'probably' are... how we hope they are. Generally, I don't give two shits what people on QZ say or write or suggest or think... as is VERY clear from my postings and various contributions here over the last few years. NO ONE can be in any doubt about that. It only concerns me what real people think... those in my real life circle of family, friends, girlfriend, work colleagues. What they think matters hugely to me. What Zebonka, ok.computer, YV, etc, etc, is of no significance to me... no more than what I think of them, matters to them. But... this lazy thing... Greg the archivist is lazy and does nothing all day, this intrigues me. There are few people that I know who work harder or longer hours than I do. This is a fact. I don't care if you believe it or not... that's irrelevant and it's not my purpose in this posting. Believe what suits you best. I have a friend in the Met Police who works 50 hour week generally, my friend who co-owns an optician practise works 60-odd hours, and so on. My book publisher/Editor in London works a 50 hour week at the very most, while his sub-editors do 35-39. My old colleagues in recruitment offices work 40 hours. Most people I know outside the music industry work a 35-40 hour basic week. With overtime, some do 60 or even 70. People I work with, Like Justin, Brian, Kris, Jim, etc, they certainly work more hours than average. 18 hours in a recording studio is not unheard of, 14 hour days is very common, and no one works less than 12... or VERY rarely. It's just the norm. Justin and I worked 16-18 hour days on the FM box, I recall, for a month or two at a time. It necessitated that, so we did it. MANY QZ-ers think that because there has been no Queen Anthology yet, still, but only a Freddie Solo box, that Greg Brooks must be a lazy git. But, they fail to realise, STILL, and incredibly, that such things are NOTHING to do with me. I work only upon what the band want me to work on. I work on MANY MANY MANY things that the public never has reason to see, hear about or be aware of. I work on things that the public would have no need to know about. Only a tiny percentage of my efforts actually would be perceived as work by the kinds of people on qz, such as Seven_Seas_of_Rhye_II, who have a totally abstract overview of me, and what my job entails. Most people actually have NO idea at all. They only think that they know. I 'think' I know what it would be like to be a coal miner, or a paramedic, or a midwife, but in FACT I actually know bugger all. My ideas about those jobs would be perhaps 1% accurate if I ever had to do them for a month. You guys have no idea what the Queen archives entail. Not quantities of tapes, nor what we do with |
Queen Archivist 20.01.2007 22:42 |
PART 2 of 2 I worked on Queen Singles with Richard and Justin and Kris, Brian, Roger, etc, and do what I do, then we/we move on. If it comes out, it comes out. If it doesn't, it doesn't. Not my decision. I'm onto other things.. maintaining film and video and digital and analogue tapes, looking after them. No sooner you reach the end, you start again. Like the Severn Bridge. You don't just finish it, and it's all done. It’ not like that for a second. Try to keep some of this in mind, chums, because too many of you talk much crap on this subject. And none of you have the vaguest concept of what I do... beyond the 1% you hear about... and that is usually wrong. Whatever the hell you think, whatever crap you want to believe because you like to dislike me, try at least to keep in mind some portion of fact and reality, some balance. There is always a balance to be had, even when you're spouting unfounded bullshit and the usual speculation and guesswork. You guys know as much about my job, how hard I work, how long, how detailed, how meticulous, or how lazy I might be, as I know about Seven_Seas_of_Rhye_II or Zebonka. The difference is, because I don't know about them personally or their jobs of work, I keep my trap shut, and say nothing about that, rather than just guess because I don't like them, and because it suits me to convince myself they must be lazy.. There really is a lot of resentment and envy underneath these comments, you know. Believe what you like, guys and gals of too much envy and not enough balance or common sense. AND... to people like Seven_Seas_of_Rhye_II, who mindlessly and without any research, spout things like.... "Yes, Greg makes mistakes and he's lazy as I've heard." I say, don't just accept "what you've heard" Don't be a sheep. Do your own research. Actually find out if someone is lazy or not before so easily accepting it. Stop being a moron. Stop being LAZY. Yes lazy yourself. Think for YOURSELF. Get off your bum and find out the truth. I have heard that Seven_Seas_of_Rhye_II hates animals and runs cats and dogs over in his/her car deliberately - just for the fun of it. What a nasty evil sod he/she must be. I'm not going to bother to find out if it's true or not. Someone on QZ said it, I think, so that's good enough - isn't it. YOU are the lazy one's, for not finding out the real facts. I repeat... You guys have no idea what the Queen archives entail. Not quantities of tapes, nor what we do with the tapes, or anything at all related to a hundred aspects of maintaining precious audio and video and film. You just THINK you know what an archive is and what an archivist does. |

Being the jovial sort of guy I am, I don't see anything wrong with ol' Mr. Brooks. Honest. I only really have a problem with people on Queen notice boards who name themselves after insufferable Residency Directors at Sacred Heart Hospital. As for Zebonka - he's a nice guy. Plays a bit of guitar. A little bit showy. |
Deacon Fan 21.01.2007 08:01 |
I think there's just a general need to bitch and blame around here and you.. I hate to say you're an easy target because that sounds like I'm insulting you, which I'm not. People take everything way too seriously so when they see someone like you who does have a serious position in the Queen world, and they see you joking around, being human and such, I think they just can't stand it. And I see your humor go above their heads time and again as well. Again, because they can't fathom that someone with your title can possibly be a regular guy... they see only a lack of product that they desire and won't allow you to relax and have some fun. As if any of them would be considered lax in their occupations for being spotted on a message board somewhere... of course not, but Greg Brooks.. "OH MY GOD! He should be preparing our boxed sets instead of posting on forums! The nerve of the guy!" It's part not understanding your duties, as you say, and part jealousy, part just having someone to bitch at. There are quite a few negative, always bitchy folks who take things way too seriously around here. I've been guilty of it myself, but not in nearly every single post like certain individuals. I only stick around because a few people seem to enjoy my weirdness and occasional good humor, and I'm very lonely so I need the feedback. :) |

It's nice to be mentioned. I never called him lazy, so I've got no idea what I'm doing in this thread at all! George Carlin was right though - there is absolutely nothing wrong with a lazy person. A guy sitting in his house watching TV all day and stroking his dick ain't causing any problems... You look at the really motivated people - murderers, stock swindlers and TV game show hosts... the ones that cause the headaches. Don't you all think it'd help if we were all a bit lazier? I take no issue with Greg Brooks and/or his workload. I just think it's a little odd he hangs around here so much when he always sounds so upset. His prerogative of course - I think if we all learned to chuckle a bit more often, things would be positively rosy. |

I've never thought that GB is lazy. I don't have an opinion bc I don't know really what he does or doesn't do on a daily basis so I'm not qualified to say. Unless you are stalking him Seven Seas of Rhye, then you shouldn't know whether or not he's lazy either. I don't spend my time commenting on what other people do or don't do. I hold the mindset that if someone's got enough time on their hands to find out if someone else is lazy, then you don't have enough to do in your own life. Take of your own backyard and GB will take care of his. GB, I wouldn't ever waste my time explaining to random people what I do or don't do with my time or my work day. Whose business is it? But if you want to explain your daily doings, that is fine. I'll read them here and there. It is interesting to me bc I'm a Queen fan but I hope you don't feel the need to explain yourself to the more respectable population of QZ. We do exist. But along with some respectable people, there are knobs. You know that already but I wanted to state it for the record. Carry on. |

Bubble The Bunny I appreciate your considered comments. Your contribution was much refreshing, and likewise to see comments NOT predictable for a change. Ta chummer. Same goes for you. You can have a shandy too when I see you. Screw those on here who were too thick and stupid to agree. WE are right, THEY are wrong. It's that simple. Messenger of Leah... In answer to your "reasonable request"... "So instead of writing a two-part post on what you don't do, why don't you enlighten us and tell us what you DO do? Put to bed the rumors and put all your doubters in their place and tell us what it is you do." I would think that's a fairly reasonable request, wouldn't you?" GB... No. It's not reasonable, not really. Firstly, you overlook the significant point that I actually DID tell you some of the things I am responsible for (albeit only in general terms), which I've not told you before. Thankfully a fellow QZ-er has since pointed that out to you. I did tell you some things. Why didn't you mention that? My main point was merely that I am perceived as lazy by people who know nothing at all about my job, or what it entails. They know nothing, but still inexplicably accept the word of strangers on this site that i'm lazy, because it suits them to. That they do so without question, without foundation or one iota of proof, so readily, and without conducting one second's worth of research of their own, makes THEM lazy, ironically. THEM lazy, not me. That was the purpose of my posting. Establishing this point does not mean that I should thereafter have to explain exactly what I DO do in my job. Why should I? I would no more expect to tell you about the details of my job, than I would expect you to tell me and all other QZers details about your job. I really don't know why people make this assumption that I should automatically answer all questions, as if it should be public knowledge - the done thing... like they are somehow OWED that info. This is illogical, yet many people have this attitude and expectation. I've been here before, but still here we are again, 4th, 5th time, with me having to explain what should SURELY be obvious to every normal person. Can we agree, finally, that I'll keep certain details of my job private, while you do the same - until such times as somebody, any one of us, decides they want to divulge further details to anyone who's interested. Let's not just EXPECT it, like we are obliged to give out that kind of detail. And let's not be pissed off at anyone trying to respect the wishes of their employer and who maintains a professional silence where appropriate on private or sensitive issues. THIS is what I call reasonable. This is basic stuff, in my opinion. Why do so many people on this site (older than 20 years, shall we assume) have such a problem with this, and get all bitter and confrontational when I will not explain every detail of every hour's work, at their every demand? |

If you are then I'm bitterly disappointed that QP have the belief in you to be the Queen Archivist. You are being paid a salary to to do the job given to you and all you seem to do is ridicule genuine Queen fans trying to discuss amongst themselves the life and times of one of the most important and influential bands of our time. All you seem to do is to wind up some of the members of this community by pointing out some of the *incorrect* things they've said but all you're doing is making a fool of yourself. Not so long ago in the early 90's a release of a/some boxed set/s was 'promised' to us fans. Can you really blame us for the frustration it causes when 15 or so years on nothing of real importance (except for MIH and Freddie box set) has been released? We have been faithful to our heroes but lack of promised product and unkind words from the alleged 'archivist' is driving away the hardened fans. |

People like JSS and Martin Scully are not nearly as antagonistic to you as you to them. Get over your own ego, and communicate, that will serve you and those you communicate with.
