There are plenty of online journals. If this is your first time, that might be the way to go.
Unless you want to go the self-publishing route.
Aww, heck. I'm not helping much. Google to your heart's content, and maybe someone else can steer you in the right direction.
I write stories, some poems (though they're totally awful), fanfiction, and I'm busy attmepting ot write a book. I don't know anything about actual publishers, but if you write fanfiction link is a good place to look.
By the way, Kim, I'd like to see your poem :)

I write alot of poetry ut I don't write it to be published
I'd do as someone else said, self publishing or online journaling. If it gets good response, think about going bigger publishing wise. I'm not sure if this is still true, but I think that if you stick the piece to be published in an envelope (or similar apparatus), and then send it to yourself, that might give you a copyright (to be safe).

*EDIT*
Alice Cooper said something about this last night. Don't open it when it comes back, and the postmark date will really help you.

joxerthemighty - your songs are crap anyway, so please don't share them with us.
I happen to be a quite good writer myself. I've written some stuff that i just jam away to on the guitar. It's quite good i feel, however someday i hope to make it as the next 'freddie mercury' so i won't be sharing them here.
There has to be loads of good writers out there? Right?

I'm sure there are.
Just like there are loads of good singers out there. Some whom "the world at large" will never hear.

^Eva Cassidy and Nick Drake. Anyone and everyone who likes Jazz or Folk (respectivley) should check them out.
It depends on what you write, really. But to be sure you should get in touch with other writers, older ones would be great (as masters - in the sense of passing their knowledge to you). You could give some of your works to people you know, or not (but the ones you trust), to see how the general reaction is about them. If they also agree that you have talent, then there is no impediment in publishing. :-)
