I've seen pictures of Freddie being carried on stage on the shoulders of a hefty man dressed in a superman's costume, and I think in a Santa costume. For whatever reason, these pictures bother me. I don't like them. What tour was that from, and do I assume the Santa outfit was during Christmas time of the same tour? Did he sing a full song while perched up there? If so, what was it? Is it on any dvds or vhss? I have a decent enough collection of those, but I don't think there are any clips of that on them. Did he gracefully dismount?
Superman, Santa, Darth... He sung We Will Rock You.
Official releases: snippets of those "on-shoulders" performances can be found on Magic Years and Champions Of The World VHS, for instance.
It was on few different tours as I remember.
Santa Claus - LA Forum 12-22-77 the final night of the tour.
Darth Vader - The Game Tour but when George Lucas found out he wanted that stopped. He whined that they didn't ask for permission to use his character on stage.
Superman - Jazz and Live Killers tours and I think maybe The Crazy tour.
I think you can find it on the dvd hammersmith 79 and tokyo 79. And I like this very much actually. It proves he had a sense of humour. OK, maybe it's ridiculous, but it works.;) At least in my case.

Yeah, I never quite understood that. If anything, Queen were promoting Star Wars, not making fun of it.
Actually, I think it might have had to do with one of the fan club biographies for the certain roadie who portrayed Darth Vadar, where he listed (among other jobs) that he played the villainous character on the 1980 tour. Somehow, George Lucas's people got wind of it and demanded the offending line be removed, so the roadie had to sit with a black marker and block out "and Darth Vadar!".
Personally, I find that a bit petty, that George Lucas would have to worry about the itty bitty little Queen Fan Club magazine, so I think it might just be a bit of sensationalism to help make the story more interesting.
Yeah, I was one of those 15 year old kids back in 1980 that got the fanclub magazine with the blacked out bar across the "Darth Vader" in Wally Verson's profile. It took a while to get it off but then when it was finally removed that's when the mystery was revealed. I don't know why Lucas made such a big issue out of it. Both Star Wars and Queen were iconic images of the 70's and Queen did him a favor by doing the "Darth" thing AND mentioning Star Wars in "Bicycle Race".
Maybe that's why George made such a stink... perhaps he was a big fan of Queen, and then when Freddie sang "And I don't like Star Wars", George was mad and vowed off the band forever, inconveniencing their fan club in the process...

Why? It was a bit of harmless fun.
Why? I don't know. Maybe it's just one of those things that I usually don't see - a grown man on a grown man's shoulders. I wish I could see the whole song done in whatever concert. I would have thought he would have been singing a more light and fluffy song rather than the heavy WWRY. Wlhat was the audience's reaction? Was Freddie laughing/smiling through any of it? Yes, of course, it was a bit of harmless fun.

On thinking about this some more, out and about I might see little kids - girls or boys - riding on a man's shoulders. I don't think I have ever seen a little girl riding on a woman's shoulders. At outdoor concerts there are women perched on men's shoulders. But I don't think I have ever seen a man on a man's shoulders outdoors.
Carboengine, don't know if you've already seen this one link
on this occasion it's superman! You're right about it being a rather odd image but it's more amusing than anything else!

No, I had not seen this one. Thanks! I can see I haven't youtube Queen-googled in quite awhile. Oh, my, I really haven't seen any live concert footage from that whole era of red pants, black motorcycle cap, blue kneepads, and Freddie being young and major frisky on stage. What a treat! Then I watched the other clips from that concert. Roger's I'm In Love With My Car is fantastic. Could you imagine what I could get done around the house if I wasn't watching Freddie so much?

That's true, he can be *very* distracting! Incidentally, do you use the bittorrent program? I used it to download the whole of that Hammersmith concert, it's in pretty good quality (as shown on youtube) and includes some great performances.

No, I don't do the bittorrent thing. I tried a few times but couldn't figure it out. My brains got tangled up in the instructions. Perhaps that is a good thing. If I had all of that to watch, I would never leave the house! Don't tempt me. Don't tempt me!
