Anyone else got this? I'm on my first listen, just a few tracks in but really liking it so far... |
thomasquinn 32989 27.12.2006 12:43 |
Oh, there's one I love. The song 'My Sweet Lord' is really good, IMHO; luckily, the rich mix of religions puts the title in perspective. The Dylan-material actually works in Harrison's hands, which is more than Eric Clapton (whom I greatly admire, by the way. Just not his renditions of Dylan's stuff) can say. In fact, I can't find anything wrong with the first triple-album in history. |
magicalfreddiemercury 27.12.2006 13:06 |
I have this on LP and LOVEd it! I use past tense because I can't play it any longer. I must get the CD. It's been too long since I've listened to it. I'd swear I all but wore out the album years ago. Fantastic music from the Quiet Beatle, yes? EDIT - this review about sums it up - Taken as a whole -- the preferred method of consumption, if you have a couple of hours to kill -- All Things Must Pass makes you wonder why people glossed over Harrison's work all those years ago. ~David Sprague |
bitesthedust 27.12.2006 13:48 |
I was already aware of My Sweet Lord & Give Me Love (not on this album I know) but I'm almost at the end of the album, and there isn't a bad track so far. Beware Of Darkness, I'd Have You Anytime, Wah-Wah, What Is Life, If Not For You, All Things Must Pass, Art Of Dying and Let It Down in particular are great. Fantastic music from the Quiet Beatle, indeed. |

Absolutely stunning album. Makes me wonder what could have been if All Things Must Pass was properly recorded by the Beatles. Yes, I know there's a difference between George Harrison's solo career and The Beatles. I can just imagine how Wah-Wah would have gone down with Paul if recorded at a Beatles session. Much the same way as Not Guilty, I imagine. I quite enjoy I Dig Love. Seems...groovy as the kids say these days. |
john bodega 27.12.2006 20:49 |
Quite honestly, the way the Beatles were heading... I think a Beatles album would've basically been a compilation of all of their better solo songs :P As for George Harrison... I love "Beware of Darkness". It's amazing what one can do with such simple chords. My brother learned that song on uke and put it on Youtube! Haha. |
beautifulsoup 27.12.2006 22:21 |
George is my fave Beatle. At first, it was Ringo. Go figure, haha! Anyway - I LOVE this album, even though it's SO overproduced. My fave - It has to be a tie between "Isn't it a Pity" and "Run of the Mill." If I HAD to, I'd probably choose IIAP, except that it gets a bit redudant. ROTM has some interesting rhythmic changes, and I love the lyrics. "If Not for You" is a great happy song. Ummm... the first time my mother heard "Behind That Locked Door" she said it sounded like "On Top of Old Smokey," LOL. Aren't there some lyrics in "Awaiting on You All" about the stock exchange and General Motors? But they're not in the lyrics booklet. At least not in the CD reissue box version. Or maybe I'm imagining things... **************************** Edited to Add: I'm listening to ATMP now... Wow. I had forgotten just HOW redundant IIAP really is. It's kinda interesting how he varies the intrumentals and vocals. But still..sheesh. And that whole Hey Jude thing... |
iGSM 28.12.2006 07:38 |
There certainly is. Too right. Another Day, Gimme Some Truth, Let It Down, Isn't It a Pity, The Back Seat of My Car etc, etc. Heck, I reckon even Child of Nature/Jealous Guy could have found a home on Everest. |
john bodega 28.12.2006 08:16 |
What really shits me, is that there was never a Beatles reunion in the 70's, and for no good reason! They all played (but not at once) on a Ringo album. 3 of them jammed at some famous guys party (John wasn't there because he was lazy, or wasn't invited, or something). Gun violence just sucks. |
beautifulsoup 28.12.2006 10:11 |
Listening to ATMP now... One of the extra tracks on the 30th anniversary reissue box version is "I Live for You." George sounds good on this one. I wonder how much the vocal track might have been cleaned up from the original sessions. On the other hand, most of this song uses his middle and lower range. And when he goes up high, it doesn't sound as...um...strained as it can usually in his upper voice. (Well, you know what I'm talking about...) Here it's just a relatively easly lilt up to his falsetto. Sorry. My being a singer (albeit in the classical vein), I'm inclined to talk about vocals. ************** Would any of you guitarists in the room like to comment on his guitar work on this album? Thanks. |
john bodega 28.12.2006 10:29 |
On this album, I'm actually not sure who did what, as he had so many guests/friends working on it. I will say, of George's playing, that his slide stuff was always very pretty. I'm thinking particularly of the playing he did for Saltwater by Julian Lennon. |
iGSM 28.12.2006 10:53 |
Too right. Perhaps'n it was just not their bag. They were havin' fun pissing in to the wind playing with all and sundry so why not? :) |
Lester Burnham 28.12.2006 12:07 |
Apparently, the afternoon that George and Paul had the on-screen confrontation ("I'll play whatever you want me to play or I won't play anything at all" etc.) and quit The Beatles, George went home and wrote Wah Wah. If only I could write such awesome songs after getting into fights with my friends... e: I remember this site ( link ) from ages ago, when I was a huuuuuuuuuge Beatles fan, and I thought it was interesting what could have been. |

Yes. By whoever wrote "He's So Fine." After that whole mess, George wrote "This Song" - Funny song, funny video. My favorite lyric: "This song we'll let be...This song is in E." But that's the kind of music nerd I am. |

thomasquinn 32989 29.12.2006 11:22 |
McCartney...overly commercial money-grubbing easy listening fanatic. Solely interested in making huge amounts of money (decided not to play Woodstock because it didn't pay enough), and not shy of stealing a tune or two (Yesterday, for example). |

link Well, if the song had been properly recorded by the Beatles, it would've sounded more like "Doin' Alright" by Smile/Queen, who would've in turned been sued for ripping off George Harrison. Who ripped off He's So Fine. Damn! Talk about dodging a bullet! As an aside : did ANYONE ever find out if Yesterday really did come to him in his sleep, or if it was accidentally from somewhere else? |

I don't know why, but it's like every time I hear it it's like it touches my heart like the first time I heard it. I have the 2 editions on CD, but with me I have the 30th anniversary edition (Couldn't take all my CD's with me :( so...). A fact: almost all this album was written before the Beatles broke up. |

hi i have checked the julian lennon album 'help yourself' 1991. george harrison isn't listed under the musicians who play on the album, however, he is listed on the 'thanks to' section. |
dimcyril 21.02.2007 09:43 |
so i suppose that is inconclusive. it does sound like george . maybe he didn't want a credit in case 'beatle reunion with julian' rumours started up again |

At the same time as understanding (and agreeing with) the reasons for there never being any such collaboration.... I kinda wish they'd tried it. Not even playing old songs ; new stuff of course. And not as 'The Beatles' obviously. I'm just fascinated with the music that comes out of different combinations of people, is all. Would've been interesting. |
iGSM 21.02.2007 11:02 |
Like A Toot and a Snore in '74? *shudder* I know I might get smashed but I really, really, really enjoy Free as a Bird and Real Love - The Beatles version. That's what I imagine would have happened. It's pure speculation but I would have loved to have seen 'The Beatles' release Live and Let Die. It's so very, very, very Beatles to me it's not funny. Then there's alllllll the songs they practiced during the Get Back sessions that later became solo songs. Mmmmmm, Another Day, yum, yum! I understand what you mean though. Sort of what Paul wanted to do (and ultimately did do with Wings)... just do little town hall concerts under the naaaaaaame - it escapes me for now - but whatever it was it would have been great. Too recognisable though? Probably. |
***Marial-B*** 21.02.2007 15:17 |

But to be honest, he was the real genius among the Beatles and even though I prefer Lennon as a person, I have to admit that Paul was the better songwriter, atleast when they were in the Beatles, even though I don't prefer him as a songwriter either... I doubt that the other Lennon songs had potential as singles..... He's got a lot of very pretty demos, but none of them would've gone down as well as Free as a Bird or Real Love. Having said that; I would love to have heard them do something with "Help Me to Help Myself". And I still think the 'Threetles' should've done ONE song together so the 3rd Anthology had a new single to go with it!! |
